sad to read comparisons of Nick Drake to Dylan, Lennon (and other stars in their own right), in the same comment. Nick Drake´s bright chords, rich vocals and lyrical content is unique, to me incomparable
Because there are musicians like Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, John Lennon, the list goes on, it's easier to continue living. They take the edge of my visit to this lonely planet.
Nick's music really changed my life. When I first heard this song, I knew that I had to learn to play like that. Even now the subtle complexity of some of his pieces is astounding. I remember being in tears playing this over and over; I didn't know anything could be that beautiful!
Yes, Nick´s music changed my life also! Discovered him on September 23rd, 2010 and visited his grave on September 27th, 2011....i listen to his music all the day and it´s heartbreaking and beautiful in the same way:) I love him.
Nick Drakes music touches me in way i cannot describe....i feel very close to him because of his "life story" and his suffer from depressions. On September 27th I visited his grave in Tanworth. Was a very long journey for me but it was worth it! So special...like he was "special"....
As far as Dylan or even Neil Young are concerned, they "are" certainly epic entertainers and genius' as defined by pop culture. They both exhibit the best "worst voices" in "folk-pop-rock-radio music. Art isn't always pretty, doesn't always sound pretty as typically expected or defined. However whenever a true artist delivers their end result, we are compelled to relate to it and feel their passion and expression emphatically. It sounds good to you if you are "moved" by it.
@1m2a3t4t5 I think he had quite a few good songs. To me it's a matter of less is more. In my opinion he made too many albums, too much music. The chances of any artist producing more than just only a couple of dozen songs that anyone would consider a "hit", or even want to hear repeatedly over many years is quite remote. When making music becomes more of a production for quantity concern, and less of an aesthetic, artistic, inspirational concern, it loses those vital elements.
@Mazurka1001 Whoa there. Calm down. Nick Drake is absolutely brilliant but, never call Bob Dylan a whiny hack. Guys a genius, such a genius that I can't even describe it. He changed everything. Highway 61 Revisited changed the world actually.
On a sidenote. I freaking love Nick Drake. I just wish I get to see him after I die.
@dayvenkirq Dylan was one of the first accessible (popular) songwriters with lyrics about social change so he opened the doors for a lot of middle and upper class American kids to a greater understanding of human suffering, the needs of the poor, racism, & injustices going on around the world. Although many singer songwriters came before and after him, he stands out as the guy who got a lot of attention for causes like world peace.
@cactustree505 Sorry for threading this topic here, but I've read a web-page about Bob Dylan's work on George Starostin's website. He says that Dylan covered lots of musical styles and rated the guy 4/5 on that part. Would you agree?
Dylan was never renouned for his singing ability or immense guitar playing. It's his lyrics that make him an incredible artist.
Nick Drake is an amazing talent,i'll agree with you there. This song gathers all the frustration and sadness as to why he wasn't able to share his songs with others.
Thank You, my Friend...lovely song, isn't it :) XO

Yes, I agree Dylan has an amzing bad voice, but Neil Young is an amazing vocalist despite having overall bad albums and only few good songs.

I agree, for example many double lps would be far better off if they were trimmed down from the weak songs and just made into an excellent album.

Comparisons are odourless. They are all great and we are ordinary.

Major talent, no wonder he's barely known. "Bob Dylan" is a whiny hack compared to this genuine talent.
