Cenk I'm glad that you talk about racism and are open and frank about it. I'm Canadian and grew up in an area of mostly whites. When I came to university I found it hard to relate to other cultures because I was so afraid to offend them. But I found out not talking about it and pretending that racism doesn't exist is just as offensive because it's a reality these other students have to deal with. I talk to all sorts of people now and I try to ask questions about their background so I understand.

Where i come from, there were other reasons to discriminate or hold prejudice against. That's just how institutional people become when they have status considerations. Affirmative action is the institutionalization of reverse racism, as long as it exists it will perpetuate the perception that the races and sexes are unequal and that minorities and women can't make it without the help of regulatory guidelines.

Obama didn't win the southern states not because of racism. For the most part the racists wouldn't vote democratic anyway. They cling to the Republican party of the past that supported states rights and limited governmental intrusion, but now they stand for the degradation of civil rights and spying on American citizens. I don't think affirmative action is an especially good thing. If an employer discriminates based on race, that is a shitty employer that should be sued. Applying a quota of minorities under an employers hire only perpetuates people thinking of themselves as victims.
The way the women's rights movement handles it is a good model I think, no mandate that a woman be hired or promoted, just a rain of punishment for those who are discriminatory bastards.

I know why serial killers are mostly white. The same reason why most violent crimes in this country are comitted by blacks. Serial killers have in most cases a very high I.Q., they have to have to get away with killing so many without being caught. But Bush being compared to monkeys attacked him directly and not his race, their has never been a depiction of monkeys compared to whites. Cenk I'm glad that you talk about racism and are open and frank about it. I'm Canadian and grew up in an area of mostly whites. When I came to university I found it hard to relate to other cultures because I was so afraid to offend them. But I found out not talking about it and pretending that racism doesn't exist is just as offensive because it's a reality these other students have to deal with. I talk to all sorts of people now and I try to ask questions about their background so I understand.

That is one of the oldest depictions of racism ever. But I blame the editor and anyone else who saw that pciture and not see how this picture could be seen as racist. The people who are not actively prejudice tend to support the people who are. As far as i could tell there is very little essential non prejudiced reality. Affirmative action is the institutionalization of reverse racism, as long as it exists it will perpetuate the perception that the races and sexes are unequal and that minorities and women can't make it without the help of regulatory guidelines.
We will eventually need to get passed it, end affirmative action and just crack down on the employers that practice discrimination. Quotas are counter productive

Obama didn't win the southern states not because of racism. For the most part the racists wouldn't vote democratic anyway. They cling to the Republican party of the past that supported states rights and limited governmental intrusion, but now they stand for the degradation of civil rights and spying on American citizens. I don't think affirmative action is an especially good thing. If an employer discriminates based on race, that is a shitty employer that should be sued. Applying a quota of minorities under an employers hire only perpetuates people thinking of themselves as victims.
The way the women's rights movement handles it is a good model I think, no mandate that a woman be hired or promoted, just a rain of punishment for those who are discriminatory bastards.

That is the tough part, on what basis will you sue the employer?
Or what if an employer, be it a state government, simply doesn't hire a colored person. No employer is gonna have an official policy of not hiring colored folks, but it can do that in practice, without being accountable.

I am just saying that assuming white managers will act in a racist way, if affirmative action is repealed, is stereotyping just the same as when white people think blacks are lazy and criminals. White people don't like being stereotyped either and as long as affirmative action is in place you are telling white managers that you don't trust their integrity.
