The passage WAS written at the time for that audience. I agree, it does seem sexist, but you have to remember that, at the time, woman were uneducated. They could easily pose questions that could unneccesarily interupt the service. Therefore, so as to prevent this happening and the woman involved being shamed or embarrassed for asking a question the men would have known, it made more sense just to ask at home. I do agree it sounds sexist, but it is not something currently practised today.
