"The Riviera Hippies"...Come and listen to story bout a man named Keith, big rock star but he had some rotten teeth, than U.K claimed they owed a lot of tax, his buddy Mick said "well I guess we gotta pack", for France that is,..The Rivera, big beaches, legal tittes.....huge yahts, (Tele riff goes here)...
I think there should have been a t.v. sitcom "The Riviera Hippies"...Come and listen to story bout a man named Keith, rich rock star but he had some rotten teeth, than one day he got fed up with tax, his buddy Mick said "well I guess we gotta pack", for France that is,..Rivera, big beaches, legal tittes.....yahts, (Tele riff)...
i did a mini tour in 2006 i went to the stones gig in nice and then stayed at vilefranche for a week coudnt find nellcote so disapointed ill have to go back now i have address i flew back from france in time for don valley sheffield and two days later cardiff so i clocked up 3 stones gigs in 3 weeks in 3 different countries, Expensive... yes ! worth it........ of course! do it again ......... in a heartbeat best 3 weeks ever !
@django030358: Although, it should be noted, they didn't actually record Sweet Virginia at Nellcote, though it appears on Exile On Main Street. It was actually recorded the previous year (1970) before they departed from England. It was recorded at Mick's country house, Stargroves, again using the mobile truck as they did in the summer of '71 at Nellcote.
@aarfeld, I know that as I collect Stones bootlegs since the mid seventies, but the song fits perfectly to the atmosphere of this place (and the clip) IMO.
i must confess I´m absolutely jealous bout your 2007 vacations at the Cote d´Azur....Did you know if there´s anybody living there now? greetings from Spain...
Hi, Thanks for your feedback. It was big fun visiting this place. I wanted to go there since I read about the Exile sessions for the first time 30 years ago. I am sure that someone is living there but I have no idea who it is.
@django030358 Thanx 4 bringing me back sum gr8 [or not so gr8] memories @ "Nellcôte"! ... Believe or not but i hung there 4 a while... way back then! ... It was a "wonderful" Den of Inequity run by a blonde Queen Bee!
@goldenoriol some Russian guys had it for a while now its an Italian banker that lives there. The place was totally renovated, one guy has pictures, that place is a real mansion now!
I read "Exile on Main Street: A Season In Hell With The Rolling Stones" recently--and it was really cool to be able to put a visual to all the images that I had created in my head around the stories!
What an amazing time! What an amazing ALBUM!!!
Wish I had been there!!!
Thanks for posting and sharing this GREAT video!!!
Nice vid of your pilgrimage... Next stop: Chateau la Fourchette, near by the "Châteaux de la Loire", one of Mick J's houses... And Montreux, Switzerland, where they recorded too with their good friend Claude Nobs !...
A beautiful video, and a wonderful place, and a crazy summer the band and their families, friends etc must have had there. I´loved this are, I've been there (we also did a tour along the Cote d'Azur), and it was beautiful. And although we were very close,I didn't visit Nellcote, though, will do that next time, for sure!
One more comment. I once found The Stones the Andy Warhol "factory" days etc. endlessly fascinating. At 54 {they are 63 now} I guess a lot of the glamor has worn off as far as the hedonism and drug use. There were ALOT of casualties from that era. To me only the terrific music {from their younger days} survives. Geriatric rock bands do nothing for me. No youth.........not glamor.
Looks like a nice place. The Stones looked for another place to record but were dissatisfied in their search so what began as a temporary thing {Nellcote} became....the thing. It has become legendary over the years but was probably pretty mundane for most of the Stones at the time. Recording can often be boring and time consuming. It takes two days to get one good minute. It was the last gasp as far as a youthful Stones is concerned. They were never youthful again.

Was there a week ago. Place is being refurbished on the outside and roof. A bunch of workers there.
Tricky to find but worth it. Took a good pic with the Exile LP resting above the Nellcote sign at the gate that is seen at 1:46
