Very relaxing! Your throat hurts when you whisper as it basically makes your vocal chords do the work your mouth and toungue should be doing! It's actually more irritating for the throat than say, singing... So I hear from an instructional singing dvd anyway! If you're into rock/metal please check out my band! Yes, your vocal folds are having to hold a very tight position while you are whispering, and are also being dried out by the air passing them.

It's much better to very softly speak, and for some listeners the soft-spoken voice is much more sensual to hear.
