It's a tad ironic that, after all Henry tried to do to get a son (divorce Catherine, behead Anne, etc) , his daughter Elizabeth ends up being one of the best monarchs of English history.
The sexism during that time is absolutely riduculous- he actually thought the having a male genitalia was somehow linked to being a good monarch. I congratulate Good Queen Bess for showing her father wrong.
@oldiesbutgoldies87 I think it's "Wolsey commits suicide/finale" from The Tudors Soundtrack Season 1. Or it's "A historic love", also from The Tudors Soundtrack Season 1.
@MsSomethingsilly I'm sorry, my comment was indeed rude. I saw your comment at a bad time (personal reasons), so my answer wasn't especially nice. And I agree. Everybody has the right to their own opinions. So I am sorry if I offended you. :-)
@MsSomethingsilly And you think that my definition of beauty only is how the face looks like? Please. And you: Annabelle Wallis is anything but plain.
No matter what people thought of her, she was still a leading light for the reformation and I admire her a lot for that. I would love to visit her burial place sometime in the future.
This is so sad epically since she was innocent. I did my thesis paper on her innocence in College. I hate research but in the end it was worth it. A lot of scholars would say she is innocent then there are some that would say she was guilty but after doing my own digging I have come to to the conclusion she was innocent.
Lady Anne was herself to blame on the scaffold to end. Too bad, would have less intrigued Anne and her family, then the marriage with the king could have been wonderful. Of course, the king was thus forced the game to make an end. He should have listened to his loyal adviser and former friends instead of them to death or to banish. Anne's father, Thomas Boleyn, whom I did not trust from the beginning. These people are all the same, want to move up quickly and get title.
@ TheSweden000 Don't pretend like Jane wasn't smiling when she heard of Anne's death. Jane is only portrayed as goodly because she bore Henry a (frail) son by luck, won princess Mary's affections by luck, and kept her head by being a doormat. Anne attempted to reconcile with Mary, on several occasions. At least Anne never surrendered her beliefs to keep her head (like Jane did). Who really lived with more integrity?
@YoukonJill First: Anne’s attempt to reconcile with Mary was not exactly honest cause she demanded that Mary would show submission. Second: Where have you read that Jane celebrated after Anne’s death? Please tell me.Third: Obviously you don’t know anything of the Tudor period or of Jane. I’m a 21century girl, so I can’t be sure, but judging by your comment I’m sure I know more about it than you! Next time you wanna write that Jane was a doormat I suggest that you actually learn about her first!
I respect Anne Boleyn, but all of you who says that you love her, have you thought of something? Anne tried to manipulate the king to kill Katherine and her daughter Mary. And she was SMILING when she heard of Katherine's death. That is so cruel. That's why I love Jane. Because she was so kind, so gentle and so loving.
@TheSweden000 I agree. Katherine did nothing to Anne Boleyn. Also even Mary (in her youth) was loving and kind to Elizabeth. When Henry wouldn't provide enough money to feed and clothe Elizabeth, Mary stepped in and provided for her. Jane Seymour also thought nothing of herself or personal gain. She wanted Mary & Elizabeth to be treated with kindness by their father and restored to the line where Anne wanted Mary dead.
@LaBoricua2591 Yes we can, actually. It is proven that Anne and Henry was celebrating after Katherine's death. And she has done other not-so-good things. But no one's perfect.
@TheSweden000 Jane may have had a naturally kinder, more gentle heart, but remember how Anne was seduced, used, manipulated, and disposed of in the worst way possible. Jane was treated very well as a queen compared to the others, but all of the wives of Henry VIII were victims in one way or another.
@TheSweden000 She was happy when Katherine died because she knew that no one would recognize her as queen (and therefore would claim Elizabeth was a bastard) as long as Katherine was alive. I'll agree that Anne was a bit of a bitch sometimes but I still love her
@MsSomethingsilly She's pretty but... no. Annabelle Wallis who played Queen Jane in season 3 (much better than Anita Briem in my opinion) actually IS the most beautiful woman in the world.
@BillyTalentxB It's okay if you think so, of course. But ever since I first saw Annabelle Wallis in The Tudors, I have always thought that she's the most beautiful creature on God's earth (like Philip of Bayer said, haha).
i don't know how some people had so much dignity and grace even seconds before getting executed. i read that anne boleyn really was quite poised for her execution. a lot of courage
Curious that had Anne not been executed .. and otherwise remained Queen .. by right-of-succession, Mary would have become Queen that much sooner (in the absence of Edward III). This would have allowed her many more years to exercise her 'bloody' reign, and years more to consider whether she should 'remove' the threat of her sister (Elizabeth I). In that sense, tragic as it was, perhaps there was collateral good in the life and death of Anne Boleyn, above and beyond giving birth to Elizabeth I.
I think that King Henry would eat his daughter's dust (Elizabeth's) if being alive duringher adult years. What an irony... He executed Anne for not giving him a son and she had actually given birth to England's most important King/ Queen.
anna boleyn was a whore.i cryed for Wolsey, for More or REAL QUEEN. anglican church is nothink more than finish of hes passion to woman, nothink more, he just whant to mary some whore and he created his own church.
@Bacigalla1481 Without Boleyn, there would have been no Elizabeth I. Without Elizabeth I, who for all practical purposes allowed freedom of religion, England would have been consumed in wasteful, religious infighting over the centuries which followed. England, whose star as a European power rose under Elizabeth I, would have been in no position to colonize the Americas. The World would be a very, very different place (likely still 'ruled' by the brutal inquisition) had it not been for Boleyn.
The only problem i have with Natalie's portrayal of Anne is the lack of brown eyes (Anne's most-commented on feature) Other than that she is perfect!!
Even though I know history well enough, I was still hoping for mercy from the King.
But to see people pray for her and even people, who disliked her, moved my heart.
Oh and I cried as hell, when she was executed. BUT what gave me final peace was the scene in season 4, when Anne's ghost visits the King and Henry yells "Anne, please don't... (leave)!"
Finally finished season 2 last night, and I cried my eyes out in this scene. Natalie Dormer did the best portrayal of Queen Anne I've ever seen. I don't even want to continue finishing the series, Natalie's absence will be felt.
Noodles37UK...One sympathizes, of course, but I think Anne Boleyn's dignity on the scaffold was quite exemplary and, perhaps, one of the principal reasons she is remembered with so much admiration by so many.
@lADyLEahG Henry the 8th (according to the Tudors series) wanted a meal for only a king. He felt a swan was the perfect meal. I think this was also his celebration meal for Anne's death.
the song is jerusalem from anuna right? but i heard their version of it and it is not the same like the version in the video.. so who performed the version of the video? does anyone know that?
Heartbreaking..I am not sure whether being 9 months pregnant had anything to do with it or not but I bawled through the entire scene. :( Soo beautifully done, kudos to Natalie Dormer!!!
Divorced, beheaded, died.Divorced, beheaded, survived! That's how we were taught at school to remember the order in which the 6 wives met their end, apart from the last 1,clearly! Of course, how different the course of monarchy may have been had Henry not married his (late) brother's widow,Katherine of Aragon! This was arguably one of the most emotive and sensitively played representations of Anne's execution I've seen.
@thechuckwillkill Many reasons - she couldn't give Henry a son, and he had waited 7 years just to marry her. Also, I'm pretty sure she was accused of adultery, so a quick and easy way for him to remove her from his life was to execute her.
march1380 thanks you i thought it might be. it's sad that he and Anne couldn't have had a simple happy life together. but then we would never have gotten Elizabeth I.
I can't believe how brave she is, walking to the scaffold to be beheaded. You'd have to drag me screaming and crying. @Santhical I also heard Lady Gaga lol :) Maybe they just told the extras to scream random stuff and someone decided to scream Lady Gaga
@13elisa133 She for many years before they got married, said she would give him a son. She gave him a daughter and a few miscarriages, the last one being a boy. In his eyes, she had failed like the wife before him did and he thought his marriage was damned (several reasons why he thought that with Anne.) On top of that, he was in love with one of her Maids, Jane Seymour. He had Cromwell find as much stuff against her as possible, but sadly they were all lies and she was innocently beheaded
Anne's execution... oh God, i love this song because this brings a hope and relief and it was so amazing that music we could listen watching Anne's death was that, like it wasn't end or tragedy for her, like she was tired of all her life and she was glad she can just finish.
notice, that during katherine howard's execution the music was sad and full of sorrow.
@jassy48 I think that"s Thomas Wyatt, a poet in court who loved Anne, and who was imprisoned for the belief of having carnal relations with her. Apparantly he was released in time to witness her death on the show. I don't know about historical accuracy.
The reigns of Henri's children are reflections of character's mother/ Edouard was feeble and fragile. He died young/ Marie's reign was terrible! full of hate and revange, like her mother's prayers i suppose....and Elizabeth's reign was "the golden age". Why that? Why the prosperity has been for Ann? i have my own opinion, but it interests nobody i'm sure!
Glad to be an American. We only have four years, no matter how bad they are and they can only do a little. The Brits are idiots as they still have Kings and Queens who live off the people
@Auggie97 No need to apologise, no offence taken. Just in agreement with your post, but saying people are starting to wake up a little. The BBC have an "Have your Say" web site and they asked people's opinion on the Royal Engagement. On the whole the response was negative on the State paying for the wedding, some very critical of the Monarchy itself. This criticism has always been there, it's just that now it was at a level I've never experienced in 50 years.
I hate that Anne treated Katherine & Mary so poorly but she still didn't deserve to die.. and on trumped up charges no doubt. I hope she haunted Henry all the days of his life!
@michelleelizabethx, Swans are known for their long delicate necks and so was Anne Boleyn. Swans also signify Monogamy since once they find a mate, they stay with them for life and are known to pine away after their mate dies. Henry has only one killed. perhaps showing his will to no longer be monogamous?
@michelleelizabethx it represent Anne Boelyn. She was beautiful and elegant and had a slender neck. It bothered me too. I just bought some beautiful ceramic ones. It was something in me, to make me learn about it.
@1981Galadriel You are kidding, right? No one deserves to be murdered on trumped up charges. And Anne did not ruin Katherine's life. Henry VIII did. And Katherine had a hand in her own misfortune.
@Elisabetta611 How exactly did she bring it on herself? It wasn't her fault that she kept miscarrying. And she opposed the divorce as a maternal instinct. She did not Mary to be viewed as a bastard. Anne openly expressed a desire to see Mary - an adolescent at the time! - dead. That is lower than anything Katherine ever did or thought to our knowledge. Katherine is at leat portrayed to always be a forgiving person who was incapable of consciously hurting anybody.
@1981Galadriel There was an offer that would have worked on both sides, even approved by the Catholic church: Katharine would withdraw into a convent & Henry would marry again. Mary would have remained a princess. Katharine refused. Even though she KNEW of the War Of The Roses, of how important securing the succession was.... Where did she OPENLY express and act on it? We often "wish" that upon people in a fit of anger. She did not act on it. Nor did she deserve to be murdered.
@1981Galadriel katherine was incapable hurting anybody? Certainely But, (and i'm sure of that), it wasn't against her conscious that Rome was saccage, and many monks had been killed by the emperor's soldiers....The fact that the¨Pope was prisonner by the emperor in a terrible condition didn't hurt her very much! She knew that, still the Pope was in emperor's hands, Henri would never obtain their divorce. She was sure Henri was unable to separate their country with Rome. She was wrong.
This may be a dumb question, but is it even possible to cut off a persons head with one swing of a sword? You would think it would be difficult because of bones and things.
@dancersing03 Yes, it is possible -- this is actually an extremely accurate portrayal of how Anne's execution actually went (down to the details, like the speech she gave (which was only slightly modernized in wording for the show), her composure, and even what she wore). The swordsman really did distract her by asking about his sword, and she was killed with one stroke. :( (The more commonly used axe, however, was a totally different story: very brutal, and often requiring several strokes. :/)
@dancersing03 I think it had a lot to do with the very heavy weight of the swords used which made it possible -- that and a very sharp blade, both in the hands of an experienced swordsman.
Exactly..also remember she' was a Queen...poor Mary Queen of Scotts it took 3 or 4 wacks..but they used an axe...that is a major Faux Pas to do to Royalty, a sword was proper for Kings and Queens no matter the crime.
Ugh. Henry eating the swan at the end (and what he clearly meant it to symbolize) is just disgusting. I want to punch that evil smirk off his face.
Poor Anne. :( She died with such dignity and composure -- she was such a strong woman. And Henry was a spoiled, womanizing idiot who didn't deserve her or any of his other five wives.
i love how they put the song "a historic love" ironically to the end where henry is eating that swan :) as i remember that song was playing when henry and anne had sex for the first time and now that she died and the other one is celebrating at the same time..i found it very ironic haha :P
oh and btw, i cried when i first saw this episode...it was so sad :(
It is quite scary that for many this tv production will be seen by many to be realistic and not just a 21st century tv producers artistic interpretation of something that happened nearly 500 years ago.
This is a genuine problem when depicting historical events through a media that regularly twists the truth to serve whatever message it wants to give to serve an audience where many have never read a book let alone the dozens you would need to read to get any perspective on these events
However.. not historically correct. She did request a French Swordsman (as they are more accurate with the knife) but she wasn't killed with a sword as she kneeled. her head was on the block and it was with still with an axe.
@luvndanestrin Your "facts" are a little askew. Anne was beheaded witha sword whilst kneeling upright. Only beheading with an axe required a block. Anne did not request the sword, the headsman of Calais was sent for by Henry VIII before Anne's trial had even begun to give her a more merciful death than hacking away with an axe. The headsman's assistant deliberately made a noise to distract Anne at the last moment before he swung the sword so that she wouldn't know the blow was coming.

This was arguably one of the most emotive and sensitively played representations of Anne's execution I've seen.
popazz1 1 year ago

@13elisa133
Henry VIII liked Jane Seymour more, so he had her accused of adultery, at the time a capital offence. He also accused her of Witchcraft.
Myles0Harcourt 1 year ago
@13elisa133 She for many years before they got married, said she would give him a son. She gave him a daughter and a few miscarriages, the last one being a boy. In his eyes, she had failed like the wife before him did and he thought his marriage was damned (several reasons why he thought that with Anne.) On top of that, he was in love with one of her Maids, Jane Seymour. He had Cromwell find as much stuff against her as possible, but sadly they were all lies and she was innocently beheaded

Anne's execution... oh God, i love this song because this brings a hope and relief and it was so amazing that music we could listen watching Anne's death was that, like it wasn't end or tragedy for her, like she was tired of all her life and she was glad she can just finish.
notice, that during katherine howard's execution the music was sad and full of sorrow.

who is the man hiding at 4:41 who is crying? is that henry percy?
jassy48 1 year ago

Does anyone know what the swan represents? It's been bothering me for a while.
michelleelizabethx 1 year ago
@michelleelizabethx, Swans are known for their long delicate necks and so was Anne Boleyn. Swans also signify Monogamy since once they find a mate, they stay with them for life and are known to pine away after their mate dies. Henry has only one killed. perhaps showing his will to no longer be monogamous?

I admire her composure. But I still think she deserved it. She ruined Katherine's life for no good reason and her treatment of Mary was despicable.
1981Galadriel 1 year ago
@1981Galadriel You are kidding, right? No one deserves to be murdered on trumped up charges. And Anne did not ruin Katherine's life. Henry VIII did. And Katherine had a hand in her own misfortune.
Elisabetta611 1 year ago
@Elisabetta611 How exactly did she bring it on herself? It wasn't her fault that she kept miscarrying. And she opposed the divorce as a maternal instinct. She did not Mary to be viewed as a bastard. Anne openly expressed a desire to see Mary - an adolescent at the time! - dead. That is lower than anything Katherine ever did or thought to our knowledge. Katherine is at leat portrayed to always be a forgiving person who was incapable of consciously hurting anybody.
1981Galadriel 1 year ago
@1981Galadriel There was an offer that would have worked on both sides, even approved by the Catholic church: Katharine would withdraw into a convent & Henry would marry again. Mary would have remained a princess. Katharine refused. Even though she KNEW of the War Of The Roses, of how important securing the succession was.... Where did she OPENLY express and act on it? We often "wish" that upon people in a fit of anger. She did not act on it. Nor did she deserve to be murdered.
Elisabetta611 1 year ago

You would think it would be difficult because of bones and things.
dancersing03 1 year ago
@dancersing03 Yes, it is possible -- this is actually an extremely accurate portrayal of how Anne's execution actually went (down to the details, like the speech she gave (which was only slightly modernized in wording for the show), her composure, and even what she wore). The swordsman really did distract her by asking about his sword, and she was killed with one stroke. :( (The more commonly used axe, however, was a totally different story: very brutal, and often requiring several strokes. :/)
11Juliet 1 year ago
@11Juliet Yes, I am aware of how accuarte it is ((Me being an AB fan myself)) It just seems like it would be a little difficult to do in one stroke.
dancersing03 1 year ago
@dancersing03 I think it had a lot to do with the very heavy weight of the swords used which made it possible -- that and a very sharp blade, both in the hands of an experienced swordsman.
11Juliet 1 year ago
@11Juliet

And Henry was a spoiled, womanizing idiot who didn't deserve her or any of his other five wives.

oh and btw, i cried when i first saw this episode...it was so sad :(

She was, in fact, decapitated with a sword, not on a block with an axe.
BodaciousTness 1 year ago
It is quite scary that for many this tv production will be seen by many to be realistic and not just a 21st century tv producers artistic interpretation of something that happened nearly 500 years ago.
This is a genuine problem when depicting historical events through a media that regularly twists the truth to serve whatever message it wants to give to serve an audience where many have never read a book let alone the dozens you would need to read to get any perspective on these events
TheDrmr3 1 year ago
However.. not historically correct. She did request a French Swordsman (as they are more accurate with the knife) but she wasn't killed with a sword as she kneeled. her head was on the block and it was with still with an axe.
luvndanestrin 1 year ago
@luvndanestrin Your "facts" are a little askew. Anne was beheaded witha sword whilst kneeling upright. Only beheading with an axe required a block. Anne did not request the sword, the headsman of Calais was sent for by Henry VIII before Anne's trial had even begun to give her a more merciful death than hacking away with an axe. The headsman's assistant deliberately made a noise to distract Anne at the last moment before he swung the sword so that she wouldn't know the blow was coming.
