This woulda also served *most superbly* for the proposed wrapping up of the series, as originally intended by Grant Naylor (Not Margaritas....it's urine re-cyc!)
I must admit although the ending to 6 they went with was better, i would've preferred this as an big dramatic opening to series 7 than the technobabbly, awkward comedy opening they went for. I think the reason they didn't go for this or mention rimmer destroying the time drive is because of the plothole that Rimmer didn't actually need to take out the time drive, since it woulve been destroyed anyway (though you could've explained that with something about the other ship having temporal sheilds)
Shamefully, there are a lot of the extras I still haven't watched yet, so I hadn't seen that bit yet. But I've always wished they'd used the alternate ending that's on the Smeg Ups (or was it Outs?) and let Arnie be the hero for once, so I'm particularly fond of your alternate opening (not to mention all your other Dwarfy goodness). :)
Also since the actor of Rimmer maybe couldnt have done it for the 7th season at all, It was initialy thought that Rimmer would die saving the whole crew doing this...
Wich actually fits good with his "Better Dead than Smeg" from the previous episode. And the fact that this whole battle is his first brave moment.
Cool , but I can understand why they didn't use it . It's to dark for a comedy show , but it would have been a GREAT foreshadowing of Rimmer becoming Ace Rimmer .... "What a guy !"
But the dark part they did use - the only part they didn't show was him shooting the time drive and saving the rest of the crew. I always figured they didn't use it just because it would be too out of character to let Rimmer be the hero, though I would have liked to see them make the exception just that once. But then, as you say, I suppose he became enough of a hero when he took over for Ace, so... :)
I believe Rimmer's "Smeg, I'm a hero!" line was taken from the Series VI (VII?) deleted scenes on the DVD.
I don't remember hearing applause in that clip though, so p2p must've added that too - along with the weird 'whooshy' SFX you can hear when AJ totals the Time Drive. :-))
Smeg i'm a hero.
Simply GREAT !!!
Why they dont choose this?.
Is much better.

Is this opening on the Series 7 DVD? Or is it custom made?

Custom. Very custom.

Wow... what about the post-explosion footage (Such as Rimmer exclaiming "Smeg! I'm a HERO!!")?
