  • It's funny how for 50 years, people have been learning how to play his technique but no one has heard him say 10 words

  • You left the most important thing about Luther. Luther played upstrokes, not down. Ask John Carter Cash, he'll tell you you the same thing, That's where i heard it a few years back. Peace Man. I liked it. PW

  • Did Luther use a foot pedal?

  • Great job thanks

  • Excellent lesson thanks

  • shut yo punk ass up

  • wow thats a lot of words

  • Thanks for teaching how Luther played the boogie woogie

  • This is perfect for a micro instructional music lesson for those who are in University Education Faculties to study to become teachers.

  • Cool..good job. Great for even a bass player to learn basic country. the bass line makes the song.

  • I think you did a good job with the video. As you said Luther was not a very good guitar player in the begining so its really pretty simple, theres no need for a elaborate explaination. I will say this about Luther though. Luther Perkins wrote the book on lead country guitar. Granted theres been some guys take it leaps and bounds since his death but the foundation was laid by Luther Perkins

  • Hey Lerb ! Thanks for your Video´s. I learned mutch about Perkins. Good Job !

  • I have heard that guitar pick types help with the sound. Do you find this true and if so, what type (thick or thinner)? Keep up the good work. Hope to hear more Cash/Perkins from you and even some Wootten style.

  • I have no idea what you are talking about, but I like the sound.

  • Ooops - sorry for previous comment - just saw your licks vid - nice - thanks

  • I liked your info... How's anyone going to know if you don't talk?... just make another videoof you playing a few licks and satisfy both camps..thanks for posting...RIP Luther and Johnny

  • I'm surprised you didn't put A major in there!

  • I'd say you explain things very well . I dont want to assume what your doing I want to be told also . I do wish you would use more lighting though. Now do his version of Wreck of the Ol' 97. Thanks .

  • Hey Lerb, excellent video.... this his has been really helpful.

Cannot get the sound right yet when I play the extended shuffle with added note.

(also has to de with my amp)

Do you play as follows on the strings (for E chord):

    E D A D D ?

  • Thank You man me and a friend are planning on playing and I needed help with that

  • Hey put some more Luther stuff up. Been too long.

  • Your great at playing the boom-chick-boom sound luther made!

  • thanks bud good video this was buggin me till now!!

  • hey!! close your mouth and play !!!

  • @danyel19090

    Really?

I can't believe you'd actually think that 3 minutes of explanation concerning vital information would be too much.

  • @lerb21 yes and sorry if i said close your mouth, but talk less and show how to play this song. the images are better than the talked phrases... thank you,.it seems that you have a lot of echoes on this song too.

Anyway that was my opinion and sure you have yours.. Sorry for my english I speak french

  • @danyel19090

I'd agree with you, but many people tell me that the spoken phrases are MORE important than the visuals. Some people learn better audibly, some people learn better visually. I try to give both something so that both types can learn. I'm sorry if my extensive talking hampered your learning experience in any way. Also, there is no need to apologize for you English, you express yourself clearly.

  • @lerb21 all is okay now lol,, meanwhile, don't forget that the images((video) are better than the words lol,,have a good day...

  • @lerb21 lol.

  • @danyel19090 tooo much talking....get on with it....agreed.

  • @danyel19090 Blablablabla....boring...

  • Awesome video, everything you need to know in 6 minutes :)

  • Brilliant, clear explanation! Thanks!

  • thanx for the quick lesson I havent played in yrs now and always wanted to learn luthers style

  • thanx for the quick lesson iv havent played in yrs now and always wanted to learn luthers style

  • Maybe this is a stupid question but does the sound have to be made on an esquire or could you use a telecaster for it as well?

  • @sidvicious90 No worries a regular Telecaster will sound identical if you put flatwounds on it. Even if you don't put flatwounds on it, it'll sound good.

  • Very nice, thank you so much

  • This was great. Thanks for the quick lesson. Luther Perkins was the musical backbone of Johnny Cash's music!

  • thanks for the lesson....and knowledge. awesome

  • im now 100 % sure luther used halfwounds at folsom prison :)

  • Your a fine resource to the Cash community, doing great by Luther.

What you're doing is very powerful, as it was was Luther. This is hard Cash.

  • lerb21, Do you recommend paper under your strings for that more boom-chicka-boom sound? and whats really important on your amp to get that sound?

  • Hey lerb21 I havent seen any post from you in a while . Please post more Luther stuff

love that Esquire! Oh more light please.Oh I have an Idea Walk the line and Hey Porter.

  • Luther a lifelong hero of mine, me a bad guitar player, you a wonderful teacher.

    Much appreciated.

    dwight@humanism.ws

  • Sounds nice and twangy on my Strat. Short slap back delay makes it sound great too. Your tuning seems to be up a tad from concert pitch??

  • Good lesson and good on the history too. Thanks

  • If you talk so much to your girlfriend (or boyfriend, dunno), she (he) must be very patient person.

  • I wish you'd recorded this in concert pitch!

  • I was just talking with Bob and he said your right

  • great job, Thanks for all you do on here, you have helped me alot.

  • ........great job, a very good lesson. Jreb

  • john carter cash said luther played upstrokes, not downstrokes. that shook my world.

  • Nice work. Would like to see more...maybe something a bit more difficult...like Sunday Morning Comin' Down!

  • I have been listening to Johnny Cash since I was a child. The style of Luther Perkins guitar playing has fascinated me so much that I used to vocalize these eighth note rhythms. From watching this video, now I know how Luther made that distinctive Boom-Chika-Boom sound on the electric 6-string guitar. One song the you could hear that sound from Luther Perkins is on the Johnny Cash recording of the song, "Orange Blossom Special."

  • p.s including me. 16th etc... of Big river'll come in handy...thanks ...

  • surely help many ... nice. Flat wounds something had'nt known so'll try it.

  • I wish i could play guitar, then i should learn play like this!

  • every telecaster have that sound??? i love it!!

  • Its an Esquire Right lerb?

  • @JohnnyCashFan200 he said that it's a telecaster with a vintage style bridge.. i don't know if that is an Esquire... the important is the bridge

  • ESQUIRE

  • very cool. Love the Luther sound. Thanks.

  • I have a nice mexican strat , I put some Fender vintage 59 reissue pick ups in [Ithink thats the proper name] And it really gives you the" POP CLICK" sound good for this and stuff like Pipline You might wanna try those in your strat.

  • those work! i also recomend Texas Speacial Pick ups thats what i have in my mim strat! and they sound wicked!!

  • .....awesome, I do believe you nailed it. Jreb

  • Can this be done with a Fender Stratocaster. I have numerous instruments, as three guitars, a bass, and a mandolin and a harmonica. Now i'm gonna buy a Steel Guitar made by Jagard, or a fender banjo.

  • Yes, it can be done with any guitar.

People often wonder what guitars Luther played so I figured I'd elaborate on what he used.

  • this is another reply to next to lerbs a strat will do just find i have a mim strat with texas special pick ups its not an esquire but ur pretty darn close to the sound aslong as ur plugged into any blackface fender amp that has reverb or delay

  • Well my gear is nothing. I have a Stagg Strato, with Stagg 10Watt Amp....

  • It's no problem. It can be done on any guitar, I'm just telling you guys what Luther himself used.

There are no 'requirements' as the gear use when you do this. You can do it on a SG through a Marshall Halfstack for all I care. It's the technique that's important.

  • Well... I know the technique now, cause you showed it. Great lesson, and guitar.

  • but remember thats just how i play it lol any decent guitar will do just fine but an amp is important i recomend a roland microcube to start off with i have one and it does the job! it dosnt have spring reverb but it still has a decent reverb and delay.

  • good lesson man, but get a light!

  • your a great teacher bro! thanks

  • hey nice guitar..it is my favorite...i rembember this lesson this was the lesson i learned to play like luther thanks for re doin great lesson
