To say that MJ was about black power is to contradict the message of Blacks and Whites living together equally in love. I believe he did the black panther for the reason he said himself and that he danced, felt and acted out the feelings of the oppressed black people fighting for power. The black panters used to be violent...The fist is a symbol of unity, strength, solidarity and support also. You can't just focus on defiance and resistance. MJ was about love and unity. I agree with other interps
I love this analysis of Black or White.. I read an obscure educational article very similar to the content of this video around 4 years ago, and I love that the content of said article has now been placed in a video for many others to view! :D
More people have stated Michael was in his "black power"days at that time. And I think he never left them... He was truly angry about the way black artist had been treated and still were. In 2002 he was demonstrating in New Yor, as we all know, and I think if the trial hadn't took place, he would have gone on to do so. But his arrest in 2003 up untill his acquital in 2005 crippled him and took away his energy. Remember the pressconference in the O2 2009? He made the Black Power sign again!
I read an MJ interview in which he talks about giving a press conference with his brothers during the Motown years. They were asked about the black power movement in the news at the time but declined to answer, per Motown's strict instructions. However Michael said that on his way out of the room afterwards he turned and gave the black power salute, so the reporters would know where he really stood. Just like he did at the end of the TII press conference... btw...
Whoa! But the Michael Jackson community already knows Jackson was very much unliked by the social media and he was a big time threat to those lacking in morals and ethics.... He "bothered and stirred up" the conscience of many people. Now, how do we get the WORLD to see who Michael Jackson really was and what he stood for. This is a well put together video. It's informative and educational. My hope is that the professionals driving important projects such as theses will take it beyond the YouTu
A true examination of Michael Jackson's art and messages are sorely needed. There is no doubt in my mind that racism and fear of his power played a role in the legal and media persecution of him.
I'm so glad that others understand how powerful MJ was and that he was considered a threat. The one thing about MJ is you don't have to necessarily "interpret" what he was trying to say. MJ was actually very direct and this video shows that.
Wow, there are some excellent comments about this vid! Michael Jackson was a CONSCIOUS, CONFIDENT, COMPETENT, BLACK MAN who loved all humanity. And, dare I say, he was a freedom fighter from a young age.
Michael was a black man through and through and used his art to show the inequality in America. Indeed he was too rich, too powerful and the establishment went about dismantling all he stood for and built in his reputation. He pulled the "sheets" off American racism. They didn't succeed because Michael's art was too great too good for them to disregard. There are many that "truly" got it we are still here to work for Michaels legacy and message. He'll never die good art lives forever.
While this is a very interesting video (and I appreciate the in-depth examination of one of my favorites among his short films), it's worth noting that the racial slur graffiti did not exist in the originally aired form of the video. It was edited in later to make the apparently "random violence" somehow more palatable. The message is still a good one after the changes were made, obviously, but I'd be interested in seeing an examination of the video in its truly original form.
@mdm8 A while back, a friend of mine told me about an academic article she read on "Black Or White" released around that time... The graffiti was there in the un-aired cut, then removed for censorship reasons in the publicly televised release, then were added back in again via CG restoration techniques. ♥
@Cyborganna The point of that song is "THIS WORLD IS MADE FOR ALL MEN". Red Man (Native American Indian) White Man (Nordic/Anglo Saxon/European) Black Man (African/Diaspora), etc. Michael was in the studio watching Stevie at work, during some of the recording sessions for 'Songs In The Key Of Life', between 1974 and 1976.
@lucaslover528 The education system fails in the subject of 'History'. So many lies have made it to text books. MJ was an avid reader of all types of subjects, and especially black history. His library was very impressive and many people were surprised that he had a deep interest in the history of African civilizations. He was disappointed in the lack of literature on African American pioneers. People assume that he was naive and out of touch when infact he was more clued up than most.
Its interesting that the media ignores that fact that the FBI had a file on MJ for years and found nothing to incriminate him. He was set up for the fall. He became too big and influential. The last thing the 'Elite' wanted was another Malcolm X with an even wider appeal and universal message that was less polarizing than Malcolm X, yet equally engaging in the conviction of what he believed in. I recommend you listen to MJ's interview with Jesse Jackson in 2008. Its reveals a lot about MJ.
Fantastic! I'm tired of people saying that Michael didn't like being black just because he had a (medically proven by the way) skin disease (vitiligo). He was very proud and knew who he was completely. We need to stop believing the media's lies and start seeing the truth about this man. Go MJ!
Now that I'm watching this video I really wish that all of those journalists would've asked him about THIS type of stuff while he was still alive, because I really would have loved to have heard his take on it all. Instead they always had to ask him about vitiligo and molestations and all that other nonsense. He really should've just stood up for himself and said: "ASK ME ABOUT MY MUSIC!" I really wish Michael was still here to see all of this and respond/react.
actually that is a falicy as well, used to make him sound like a person who couldnt make intelligent decisions;he had Ruth Fine with him,who made sure he did his lessons. In fact,he read extensively thru his whole life. She was his private tutor after school became too dangerous because of the popularity of the Jackson5
Barbara Kaufmann has a great website 'Inner Michael', where she researches Michael's messages in depth. Very interesting and mind provoking. It's sad that I can't place a link here; she also wrote an excellent piece in 8 parts about 'Black and White'.
Michael was a Messenger, sent to this world to spread Love. Destroying the barriers between the races was a part of that.
I've always thought that Michael had to be brought down because of racism. He was too rich and famous for a black man. And Michael became a threat to some people in high places because he publicly began to speak up for his race, especially in the entertainment industry.
Thank you for sharing this intelligent project, it's very interesting. I absolutely agree that Michael became a threat to some shady people and industry. Thank you for speaking your mind so openly !
MJ Continued: .....Then he brings out what the Black Man has done. Instead of naming it another thing, he named it Black Man. That’s what I loved about it....And that’s the best way to bring about the truth, through song. And that’s what I love about it.
E: What you have just said is not only compassionate but compelling. How do you communicate such feelings since you don’t make public appearances to express your views in public forums?
MJ: I try to write, put it in song. Put it in dance. Put it in my art to teach the world. If politicians can’t do it, I want to do it. We have to do it. Artists, put it in paintings. Poets, put it in poems, novels. That’s what we have to do. And I think it’s so important to save the world.
It's a very interesting way of discovering layer by layer Michael's influence in so many levels in our society. What a genius! Thank you! keep up the good work!
Wow, this is an incredible video!! I loved it! It all makes so much sense! I never quite put it all together like that! He was one of a kind and was sent here to give us a message, if we were or are brave enough to hear it. I love you MIchael <3 Thank you for everything xoxoxoxo
AMAZING VIDEO.....................Michael used his music, his words and his actions to spread messages and to make the entire world open their eyes, their ears, their minds and their hearts like very few people ever have.
