From what I've analyzed about rafa's matches, a lot of times when he leaves balls short, it not jus that he hits on the run, but rather weight transfer, timing and such. I feel if there's one thing Rafa can improve on to have better chance against Nole or anyone is his footwork. As good as it is, it can still be better. Not just quicker and faster, but basically if he can get to each shot a bit earlier to get into better set-up, he'd have better execution.
It is not about court positioning essentially but about the movement of each player. Novak just moves better from side to side, up and down and more importantly changes direction better. That is essentially the difference between the two. The ball comes back one more time and well placed which he is not used to. He has learned to neutralized Nadals attack not learned to attack Nadal!!!
umm, why is there always the argument over who is better, Roger or Rafa? =.= just appreciate both players...and there's no point saying either one sucks because their records speak for themselves. It's just ridiculous people slagging the other players off so much >.>
by the way. I noticed you gave particular note to your attire as if it validated you. It doesnt!! not to be mean but put on some pounds dude. Dont mention your attire, sounds cheap and showy. A true pro talks the talk and everyone listens! Youre almost there!!! seriously, you were incredibly insightful but dont sully your presentation by mentioning your clothes (leave that to women).
@franz0092001 People hate on Nadal for one thing only, because people know at his age that he can still accomplish many things in tennis. Nadal is one of the greatest of all time who ever played this sport. I like Federer as well but I believe that Nadal will surpass him soon.
@lighten098 people hate nadal not because he can win but his irritating style. Many of his fans are anti-fed in the first place. Most novak, murray or soderling fans are not anti-fed. Djokovic punished his lack of variety there. If nadal wants to be best of all time he has to be aggressive and attempt to break every serve, play good variety. His game is choking if the opponent can keep his level, more often they make mistakes and lost.
Your comments on the strategic nature of rafas and novaks exchanges are spot on. You are exactly right that Novak has learned to take rafas looping high bouncing shots on the rise, and turn those into an offensive shot, that few can do not even Fed. I find it a little comical that you predicted Novak over Nadal however. Youre inexperience and trendiness played thru in predicting novak. It takes a lot to win the French Open (remember when they were predicting Murray to win the 09 Aussie?)
@cj397 Roger is AMAZING and no one can argue that. No one in the past have done SOME of the things he did. Like he never did some of the things other great players have done too :)... and to say no one in the future will do the things Roger has done, REALLY?! That's the thing with roger fans, they think tennis ends when Roger retires..
I have a feeling that Nadal will start to beat Djokovic. The only reason is because Nadal will change game more often. But, first things first Nadal you have to lose more pounds and get fit.
Djokovic lost to Federer, didn't he? And then Nadal beat Federer today and WON the French Open, right? Thus, Nadal is STILL the best and better than Djokovic. You suck, Mr. Smarty Pants.
Who cares about those matches....? Rafa is 6 times French open champion, Rafa has10 grand slams, Rafa is world number 1, Rafa is a legend...... Novak has a hell of a lot of catching up to do before he can even be thought of in the same category....
To all federer cocksuckers and brownnosers, now u see this swiss pussy-ass whiner cannot beat a real man in the final, he only can threaten them before the match, that arrogant prick......and then he goes losing like always.
8-17 is not a rivalry at all, it is a humiliation!! 17-8 is a domination! LOLLLLLLLLL
Yes nadal's has got brains... when the opponent plays the dropshot frequently, he will then step up the court and this provides more opp to hit through nadal when he's on the baseline vs when he's standing far behind the baseline
If instead of 10 min straight talk you incorporate the scenes from the games and try to explain the concepts over the games scenes using marker pen on the film, it would be much better.
c'mon will, I thought you were objective but you're completely dissing federer whereas in 2009, 70% of your videos were about him. How about you post something about Djokovic's dodgy diet or something?? But still a good analysis.
@Thndr94 I agree, he has been beating Rafa constantly trough the years with the same strategy as Djokovic used, hitting the ball on the rise, especially with his backhand, but no one wants to give credits to Davyd :D Nadal has the same problems with players like Nalbandian, Blake..
Another thing I see Rafa do is he breaks down people's ground strokes... Djokovic is so consistent that he keeps up such bombardments going for rallies of over 15 rallies. And also, Rafa looks for desperate shots - running slices or just blocks- and just returns it with pace. You can't really do that with Novak.
My heart clearly says Roger all the way, but my brain keeps telling me that he will lose against Novak in the semis, and that Rafa is going to come up with a new and very effective tactic in the final, that will bring Novak down in straight sets...
i actually thought that rafa was gonna do better in the French since it's best of 5 sets but that first round match against Isner wasn't really convincing to me
I agree i think Nole has a pretty good chance of winning and he is defenetly the favorite to win but I wouldn't count roger our just yet only becaous of rafa's tactic against his backhand and from what i've seen in this season Roger seems to be in better shape than Rafa
While it wasn't a conscious thought for me before your example, I agree with you, Will, on your analysis of vertical court postioning. Neither Rafa nor Nole are entirely naturally aggressive players, yet it seems Novak is better at attacking through court positioning. Don't you, however, think that Nadal's bh has been breaking down a little under the depth of Djokovic's shots (both fh and bh)?
thanks!!!! for all the videos!! i m going with ROGER XD, but between rafa or novak juhh NOVAK ,,, but when we are going to see WIL HAMILTON playing in a real game??
nadal survived a scare today. 5 set win over Isner. Crazy. He seemed to lack confidence. I think he will get better with each match like he did in Wimbledon & US Open last year.
i think its gonna be a djokovic vs nadal final this year at the french. but nadal's fitness is gonna definitely prove superior. who knows? lets see >:)
@oggy112 obviously the french open is best of 5 not like miami best of 3 and the surfaces are different so its not like playing on hard court. tennis is much more demanding on clay and will last much longer than a typical match on other surfaces especially at roland garros. im thinking nadals more fit right now to go the distance if he's taken to 5 sets again.
@techn0pvd Yeah, French is best of five and its clay and all that, but i'm commenting on Novak's newly found fitness which he displayed in miami, i never saw Nadal gasping for breath with his opponent calmly strolling around like its the mid of the first set.
Replace the FH and BH with a + and a - sign to show strong side, weak side. Makes tennis strategy ridiculously easier. Plus it will look better on your board!
What would Nadal have to do to win? Should he stop trying to run around his FH as much (which takes him way out of position often)? Alternate more between topspin and slice?
@hawaiidispenser in their last 4 matches there was very little slice, I agree Nadal should mix it up more. Also Novak figured out which side Nadal favours on his passes so he could anticipate an easier volley or following a drop shot in.
I am watching this guy for a long time, and i can (easily )deduce that he is a Federer fan :p
The analysis is pretty much reasonable (and obvious ) but it doesn't say some important points. For example the fact that Nadal doesn't play his top - tennis right now. I would like to see your analysis about how to beat a strong-playing Rafa dude (last year's RAFA). (See the highlights of last year's US open when Djoko was playing really good but still Nadal won)
good to see you back. excelent video. i also noticed the loopy ball from nadal and novak going in to minimize its effects. this french open can be great, lets see what Delpo is going to do.
Where is the net-play? Who will come to the net? Rafa-Djoko games are yeah good boring at the same time. In ins very general sense, baseline games suck.
I'm really happy you started to talk a little bit slower. I'm Polish and sometimes I couldn't keep up with you. Great video, I kinda knew that Nadal is too far behind the baseline and Djokovic is in the court, but now it makes, like, a real sense to me :D And that joke - so bad it's acually good :]
Nadal is someone who finds a way to win. The problem with finding a winning formula against Nadal, is you've just given him another chink in his armour to hammer out... and he WILL hammer it out and find a way to combat it.
I've been surprised that Novak has beaten him the way he has, but I have to think that Rafa will find an answer, and a Roland Garros match-up over 5 sets is, for me, the perfect place for him to figure Nole out.
Hey Will do you fill out the Racquet Bracket that the Tennis Channel puts out? If you do what's the best you've ever done in it? I just filled mine out a couple hours ago and it requires so much knowledge of what's happening between the players. I pretty much just had to guess through all those match-ups.
Nadal's Backhand is really good????? WTF are you kidding. Lately it has been absolute shit. He's hitting loopers to the service line or shorter and Nole is just eating them up. He needs to go to strategy he used against Soderling in 2010 RG final.
Taking the ball on the RISE... BRILLIANT!!! :] Offensive baseliner wrecking shop Lendl style.. nice to see! Maybe someday the net crashing sv player will make the comeback. Game of trends - old tennis folk say' sooo true. Nadal has met his real rival. Time to bring back the sleeveless look of warrior-ness!
Djokovic has a chance, but he's beaten him only in three set matches never in a five set match which will happen at the French open. Even with how confident Djokovic is, Rafa is still one of the mentally toughest guys on the tour and I wouldn't be surprised if Rafa beats Djokovic. I still think Djokovic can do it, but it will be a mentally grueling match for him so if he can grind it out mentally, he can win
Rafa is nowhere his level of play in 2010. He is playing decent, but not the type of tennis he play in 2010. He is nowhere close to that form. The difference between nadal of last yr, and this yr. It's confidence. The difference between djoko compare to the past, his confidence. I don't see any big different in his game. I just think it's more to do with his confidence. Nadal thing is more of mental than physical.
@Thutmosis7 There is just one answer...Djokos skiddy angled backhand wide to Nadals forehand. The damn thing bounces in the service box and skids way off court with pace.....Watch Cincy 08....Djoko broke Nadals 7 tornament run (3 surface swing) with that killer shot....
What if I like this and think you don't know what you're talking about? And what do you mean you have your attire. You have a special uniform for the French Open?
I think the problem with Nadal's "moonballs" is that most of them were left short near the service line right near Djokovic's backhand hit zone, it looked almost silly at times, maybe if Nadal was able to keep his moonballs deep near the baseline he would have been able to neutralize more effectively, but the way he did it was suicidal.
Djokovic demonstrated this matchup superiority in past wins over Nadal but the difference now is his confidence which allows him to execute near perfection
i think djokovic is the only man at this moment that can do all you explain in this video.
also think rafa is going to beat federer (no djokovic) at RG final. Call me stupid or whatever you want. Novak has the preassure on his self. He could be even at the quartes
Hello WIll, it is interesting that u haven't even mentioned Davydenko's tactics against Rafael Nadal. Djokovic uses the same strategy as Davydenko, hitting the ball on rise, particularly with his backhand, generating shots with so much pace, and keeping Nadal far behind the baseline. It would be interesting to see does Davydenko (if he even reaches 3rd round of RG) can do the damage to Rafa this year, although he is out of form very long.
Make that 7 straight wins!

thanks hamilton, great explanation.
The fact is that today, novak has better angles than rafa just because of what you said, he is IN the court.

Hey Will do you fill out the Racquet Bracket that the Tennis Channel puts out? If you do what's the best you've ever done in it? I just filled mine out a couple hours ago and it requires so much knowledge of what's happening between the players. I pretty much just had to guess through all those match-ups.

I believe Novak will be able to beat Rafa in the French Open. Interesting analysis. Thanks.

Hey will, I think Djokovic is going to take french open unless Murray can stop him. What do u think about Wimbledon?

Although I wouldn't bet against Rafa at the French, shouldn't this be a "How to beat Novak Djokovic" video in light of his win streak?

Nadal over Fed. The streak will end.

novak's backhand crosscourt has been killing rafa
ludtke337 9 months ago
Nadal's Backhand is really good????? WTF are you kidding. Lately it has been absolute shit. He's hitting loopers to the service line or shorter and Nole is just eating them up. He needs to go to strategy he used against Soderling in 2010 RG final.

Question: How do you beat Rafael Nadal... Answer: Get Lucky! :D
3DGNumberOneFan 9 months ago

There is no reason not to like Djokovic. He is such a good person and so is Nadal. Great people and professionals.

I still think Djokovic can do it, but it will be a mentally grueling match for him so if he can grind it out mentally, he can win
taksmart 9 months ago
Rafa is nowhere his level of play in 2010. He is playing decent, but not the type of tennis he play in 2010. He is nowhere close to that form. The difference between nadal of last yr, and this yr. It's confidence. The difference between djoko compare to the past, his confidence. I don't see any big different in his game. I just think it's more to do with his confidence. Nadal thing is more of mental than physical.
Thutmosis7 9 months ago
@Thutmosis7 There is just one answer...Djokos skiddy angled backhand wide to Nadals forehand. The damn thing bounces in the service box and skids way off court with pace.....Watch Cincy 08....Djoko broke Nadals 7 tornament run (3 surface swing) with that killer shot....

What if I like this and think you don't know what you're talking about? And what do you mean you have your attire. You have a special uniform for the French Open?
SuperCarcher 9 months ago
I think the problem with Nadal's "moonballs" is that most of them were left short near the service line right near Djokovic's backhand hit zone, it looked almost silly at times, maybe if Nadal was able to keep his moonballs deep near the baseline he would have been able to neutralize more effectively, but the way he did it was suicidal.
Djokovic demonstrated this matchup superiority in past wins over Nadal but the difference now is his confidence which allows him to execute near perfection

But we also must give credit to to the angles Novak generates qith his backhand

You know how you beat Nadal? You hit higher topspin than he does, hahaha. That simple.
jyy82993 9 months ago
i think djokovic is the only man at this moment that can do all you explain in this video.
also think rafa is going to beat federer (no djokovic) at RG final. Call me stupid or whatever you want. Novak has the preassure on his self. He could be even at the quartes
sebaxoo 9 months ago
if rafa dont play good brom bakchand side he can be beaten on clay, and djoko its not just itneligent he got an agresive game so.. he can beat him

Cheers
