  • @TheElectromagnet AC/DC Will be studied in 100 years time, but JB won't be. The reason why this music is studied today is the same reason why AC/DC will be studied: it's good music. It's just people's different opinion and likes or dislikes on each genre of music or piece. You saying it doesn't have any soul in it is your opinion. I'm 15 and I still study The Beatles in my GCSE course work, and I love it. It's more down to opinion than anything else.

  • Jeff, you are perfectly up front about this being a work in progress. As a professional musician and college music teacher, I am duly impressed with your technique and interpretation of one of my favorite pieces for cello or classical guitar (I studied it decades ago). I look forward to hearing a second version when you feel it has ripened. I wonder whether a slightly slower tempo might lend itself to greater clarity--the bass give a dense sound. Again, it is wonderful and inspiring. Bravo.

  • beautiful, but i prefere to play it more slowly, dynamically ;) but as always, you are some kind of a mentor

  • Great playing, but not used to this type of clean sound coming from a bass. Sounds almost like a synth to me.

  • "This doesn't have soul" is just another way to say "I suck too much to play this" :D

  • you donk kick ass, you destroy its existance from this space-time, really dude you rock lol! cheers!

  • awesome, bach's prelude from the cello suite. really dude. awesome

  • Really great to see you transcribe all the classical music for electric bass! The intonation is bit suspect though. I'm glad you did this on fretless however.

  • He just took a shit on any bassline I have ever played or make up in my life.

  • Would be vastly improved by rubato. Don't get me wrong - this is way better than I was ever able to play it on a cello - but it could be even better.

  • unfuckin believable!

    its fretlessssss!!! OMG!

  • This guy plays like a robot.

  • freetless sweet

  • mastering the classics on any instrument is difficult. fine job.

  • NICE keep going mannnnnnnnnnn.....

  • wtf jeff!!

    use your middle finger too!

  • Added to my 'guitar gods' playlist.

  • i really like when you play the fretless, your a talented musician and i really enjoy your videos

  • Any one see that episode of Family Guy where Stewie and Brian get clones? This sounds like Bitch Brian singing Bach.

  • now lets hear the rest of the Cello suites...

  • This fretless has markers! You cheater! Haha Great Video :D

  • @baconskull Having a lined/dotted fretless ain't cheating. It simply means that the user is not playing to look different, unique or cool but he is play to sound different, unique or cool. What is the point in making things harder when there are other easier ways to it.

  • 7-string fretless bass. It was overkill at "7-string bass", but "fretless" is adding insult to injury.

  • Good grief, man! It's hard enough to intonate properly on a four-string fretless. You have some serious ambition to play a seven, and this piece to boot. Nice job!

  • imagine if he played that whole thing rings out for the last chord....*hits wrong note* AL;SDJFAS FUCK

  • Takes serious dedication dude

  • I play classical pieces on bass as well, but have never attempted this song. I think you have just given me the inspiration, thanks and good work ! That probably took some time to learn I bet.

  • Just so everyone knows, I have just burned my bass and am jumping up and down on the ashes.

  • This is really Cool, please keep up with the Classical Stuff,

I have some onfo on a 16 String Bass if you are interested

mail me and I will share the scoop with ya.

  • he's better than most guitarists lol

  • the hands are hypnotizing

  • very impressive!!

  • very nice

  • maybe cut the middlefinger off, then it's out of the way :D

  • I'm sorry, but that's extremely sloppy. All over the place. Bass sounds really cheap, too. Kind of sounds to me like the bass was too much for you to handle and some of the notes just didn't come out clean. No judging you on that at all, because a 7 string bass just isn't very comfortable. And as someone else stated, there was nothing emotional here or anything dynamic, just straight, note for note, boring after 60 seconds lines. All I can commend here was that you memorized the notes.

  • @RebornThroughHate I'd like to see you come close.

  • @zilch1823 Maybe I'm twice as good or don't play at all, but that is irrelevant because this is about the video here. I think his Bumblebee is excellent.

  • Is that Alice cooper? Wow , what a bass. It looks like it's too much to handle. Not perfect but damn nice. I know your fingers are prolly still hurting after that rendition.

  • ow man, you need improve your interpretation. there is no dinamic here, you need to do the crescendo, and etc. you nee to focus the disonance, realease the consonances, and make it more legato. Also, dont make accents in wrongs places, this is barroc style, you always need to think about the beats . but you have a good technick, i would recomend you to listen to barroc cellos playing this.

  • @leolinklima Baroque*

  • your tone is great. many of the "bass virtuosos" on youtube have problems with having too much finger noise etc.

  • bellissimo bass !!!

  • wow that was good

but i bet like 4 trees went into the making of that bass lol

  • Technique is the bridge between the mind and the instrument. It allows your fingers to do what your mind hears.

In my opinion, soul is how well the final product (the music) reflects what the creative mind produces, assuming the musician has creativity.

  • Thank you. What a beautiful instrument. And the playing, J.S. would be proud. I am proud. Thank you.

  • Attempting this on a fretless bass is like trying to knife the president with a shank, but damn you did good, I can barely play this on my classical, you rock.

  • excellent playing dude.

  • 55 non bass player

  • did you put and synth bass effect? sorry I sounds good but that "effect" mmm well...

  • @iscarg its a fretless.

  • sorry but the tone could be cleaner.

  • oh le ouf !!!

  • I wouldn't be caught dead near a 7-string fretless bass. Good job.

  • its my dream play this song one day one day

  • :P damn this is beautiful

  • Inspiring.

  • yup its not perfect... but i say, its hard to play a fretless. well done

i can only play one note on a fretless

  • @slapa7fretless Your right. Any douchebag that dousn't like it... How about you do it better, or shut up. The people that don't like this probably don't even play an instrument.

  • most of you dissin this guy have probable never played of have even seen a seven string fretless bass i own i bought it a year ago and there not that easy to play so cut the man a break he did a great job if you think he didnt pick that instrument up and try to play it p.s. ERB's kick ass

  • That's a monster bass my man! Nice playing techniques too!

  • i prefere the real one

  • this must be the most dull performance of this piece ever

    no dynamics whatsoever

im hearing open strings that shouldn't sound.

    boooooring

  • @lavendistesapo

let me see you play it on a 7 string fretless.

  • @lavendistesapo you don't even play bass or for that matter ANYTHING!!!!! you don't even have any uploads

  • he swallowed all the notes... not good tbh

  • You look a bit like Steve Harris - great bassist!

  • fantastic!!

  • people who say technique is not soul need to open their mind, first of all to each his own, secondly to have the willpower to practice and escape the boundaries set by others requires a big amount of "soul" precision is everything and a punk bassist, funk, metal, jazz, whatever bassist, for example, is just as good as a technical bassist and as good as any other musician who feels music as an artistic escape

  • @Marilola75 exactly, and more over, before you can put soul into your instrument, you gotta have at least some technique, without it you can't even play.

  • @Marilola75 exactly, and more over, before you can put soul into your instrument, you gotta have at least some technique, without it you can't even play. And who says that Bach didn't had soul? That guy is an inspiration where pretty much all our music came from. He was way ahead for his time in music. As well as Hayden, Mozart and a lot more historical composers. They started the musical revolution what we still enjoy today. And I don't tell this because I'm the bassist of a Death Metal band.

  • @Marilola75 I agree. And the bottom line is that while this type of music may not exude "soul" this crap is centuries old and is still being studied and played by people today. Nobody will playing "black and yellow" , Justin Bieber, or heck even AC/DC 100 years from now.

  • @TheElectromagnet I think AC/DC will still be played 100 years from now.... I'm sure it will be. And I hate AC/DC.

  • @TheElectromagnet Don't underestimate the power of AC/DC!

  • @TheElectromagnet Haha yeah because they will have much worse music to play! I like AC/DC though so im not saying thats not bad music:)

  • @TheElectromagnet

    u never know what will be played in future what with all the stuff made now;

only thing guaranteed in life is sods law, so they probably will play bieber and forget stuff like this if present trends of lazyness etc continue.

  • @Marilola75 TECHNIQUE IS NOT SOUL!

  • @mathal13 neither is bach so shut up

  • @Marilola75 If you ask me, the people who tend to get upset with some involved, technical bass playing are uptight guitar players that don't want a bass player to steal their thunder. I've never understood what "soulful playing" really meant. When I play I'm very soulful and my hands are all over the place. To each their own, indeed.

  • why everyone so negative this sounds great, AND AT LEAST HES NOT TAPPING IT!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! GOOD JOB MAN KEEP IT UP!!

  • She's beautiful but all this string make this bass ugly ..

  • @lunatik75vnr haha tu es français, en anglais la basse n'est pas au féminin ;-) anyways...great video!

  • @Imthedragonreborn haha tu m'as eu :)

  • Well, at least he played all the notes. Too bad the articulation, volume, and phrasing were all hit or miss. Definitely listening to his fingers playing the instrument much more than the music.

  • I want your bass

  • you got all the notes right, but it doesn't sound "music" enough..

  • He was playing in the same register as the original. If her were to play it an octave lower, it would be too muddy. Sure, he could have lowered it a couple keys, but probably be playing in a key with lots of sharps. Bach is hard enough as it is! Give the guy props for even trying on bass.

  • 0:01

  • great stuff dude!!

  • you have the tehnique. But no soul.

  • I'd like to see those 47 people who disliked this do better job.

  • does it need to be so fast???? great off course tho i think it lacks of phatos.......

  • sounds great man

  • Nice effort, and you obviously worked hard at learning this. My only question is ... why? The piece was written for a bowed instrument; it can sound good on an acoustic (classical) guitar, but on an electric bass it's impossible to play it as legato as it should be, or even close to it.

  • WHO CARES?! He can do whatever he wants.

  • @dartagnan712 I'm curious what you mean by this. a fretless bass is probably as close as one can come to an upright acoustic cello without picking up a bow. I think the problem with this recording is wayyyy too much treble in the EQ. I also feel like he's playing it an octave too high

  • @mcblah True, with the fretless bass you can get a more legato sound than with a fretted instrument, but still it's a plucked instrument and it's going to sound more marcato than a cello. And he doesn't appear to make any use of slurs at all.

I think you're right about too much treble. There's a twangy tone that's unpleasant.

  • @dartagnan712 I just transcribed and coded this entire piece to be played on a 5V piezoelectric buzzer for my microcontroller interfacing course....after hearing it on that awful little thing, any instrument sounds fantastic.

  • your damn dedicated to your bass long live to you :D

  • YOU ONLY MUST MUTE THE OTHER STRINGS.THIS MAKE NOISE.

    MY ENGLISH IS NO GOOD

    SORRY

    YOU PLAY VERY GOOD

  • Bach is a bitch with the contrast and changes from dominate to diminished chords! Still love Bach, however

  • capo !!!

  • Why ?

    A bass player...

  • You're flat a lot of the time. Play it slower too, let it breath, that'll help intonation too my guess is. Good work

  • bach and baroque music i all about phrasing. One phrase ends, the other begins.

  • This bass was originally built for Chuck Norris...but he failed and gave it to this guy

  • you fucks always have sumthin to say like u where better that this guy haha fuck u.. start uploading videos..

  • please do some MUSIC not only notes!!!

  • @jackzon80 are you serious?.... WOW... LOL.... i hope you were joking. ..**stops loL** ...this IS music, maybe not the kind you can appreciate, but this IS music.

  • @Bassics85 I agree with jackzon, listen to the version of sinophysker he plays it with so mutch more feel to it, then you know what he meant with play music not only notes

  • @RYANN36 true, you can assert that in one much more feeling is displayed than the other, however the video description clearly says "it's not perfect" ... ;) ...that alone makes me understand that it is not played with as much feeling: who would play anything that in consciousness is not perfect, with so much feeling? i believe if Mr Jeff felt he had perfected the piece then he would had presented it with more passion, and it would have been more appealing.

  • @Bassics85 and who knows, me he simply wanted to present the song on this instrument and no more; maybe its just hes way; look at his other videos and you will better understand what i mean.(not saying he never shows feeling either.) PS: i am not fighting with you or Jackzon80, but simply putting my two cents ;) .

  • @jackzon80 Um, that's a piece from the unaccompanied cello suites. Notes ARE music -- unless of course you know something Bach didn't.

  • Comment removed

  • @plangentmusic listen to Misha Maisky playing Bach's suites, for example.

    that is MUSIC.

Instead in this video we have ONLY notes.to call it music need something more ;)

with bass is more difficult to play CELLO suites,of course but you can.

sure better than this nice guy.

  • @jackzon80 I'm not saying this is the best version I ever heard, but he did a nice job and your comment was misleading.

  • @plangentmusic there are no phrases, no breathing, no dinamics.

    I repeat,there are only notes.

So it isn't a nice job.

As exercise is good, but it's far from music.

This is my opinion, of course.

  • id love to see you in the very early stages of learning this. the quality must differ. :L

  • You know how to do it! Nice job!

  • Do you transpose everything by ear?

  • Excellent!

    Not perfect, you say.

As Segovia once commented on one of his efforts, "It will do"

  • Nice hair! lol

  • Sounds weird lol

  • Why are there no frets?

  • @boredom1000

    you're a huge moron.

  • @boredom1000 No, sir i believe the right question is why should there be frets. :)

  • @rikkitimbo Haha! So retards like me have an easier time finding out where to put their fingers!

  • like you said for yourself .,. its not perfect. but keep on practicing this one...its such a nice piece.

  • Beautiful intonation, impressive! (And what a nice bass!)

  • Thats is a beautiful bass man,bad ass

  • Really great! What is that bass you're playing?

  • veeeeeeeeeery good play.i belive in slower speed would be sounded even beter.i didn't say that because i think you can't play in the speed that you played it.you have crazy skills and i enjoyed your play very much..in my ears would sound better slower but that's just a matter of taste its not about right or wrong

Alors bonjour! Et oui toi aussi a ce que je vois!

  • Beautiful, buddy!

  • LMAO about the bass being made out of a whole tree. Dunno just struck a funny note! :D

  • BRAVO!!!

  • you know what, at least you did the work to understand the piece. people post stuff that they haven't even done the work to finish. this is, as you said, almost there so good on ya.

  • mto bom

  • which strings do u use? I'm waiting for my 7 strings fretless and I think I'll get hard time to find the right strings, as it comes with the roundwounds

  • @mystical999

If you want mellow, go flatwounds. Halfwounds are a little brighter from what I've heard. However, I know for a fact that roundwounds will scratch the hell out of your fingerboard.

  • this guy is bass god... just see his other videos

  • Is that a Slap Bass? Very difficult to play and you are good Sr.

  • I appreciate Bass/Guitar players that are Clearly excellent on their instrument. Bravo

  • Dude, did you have to have that frickin' bass custom made? A fretless seven-string is completely unheard of! Awesome cover, I wish I was you! I've been playing for about eight months, and I'm already really good, but I don't think I'll ever be that. Any helpful tips?

  • @panteralover23 just find music that is slightly above your level work on it until you have the level mastered then keep going

  • @13Djvwood, alright, I'll try that. I actually worked on "Indians" by Anthrax for about a month and a half, and after that, I'm working on Steve Harris now. Though, that's super hard, and I am curious, how long have you been playing? Also, I'm quite curious to how long you would practice everyday and different techniques. Thanks. :)

  • @panteralover23 I've been playing multiples of instruments for about 3 to 4 years. I'm actually a guitarist and i have alot of friends that play bass and the techniques are similar. something fun to do to increase your playing skills is a 12 bar blues scale in Bb it sounds awesome on bass guitar as well guitar.

  • @13Djvwood, alright, I'll definitely use that! But, there's no way you got that good in four years, is there? If you did, then DAMN!

  • Wonderfully done, Jeff, as always. But your intonation tends to lean a bit toward the sharp side. Not badly by any means, and this is certainly not an easy piece to play, much less in perfect tune. Just an observation, love your work!

  • That was hardcore!

  • i love the rawness of classical guitar and bass peices =] makes the piece to me

  • You really love your bass realy?

    You are a master.

  • Great music. I hate Ron Wyden! Really inappropriate. Mike Beilstein

  • damn thats sick!! props awesome instrument

  • wow

  • dear master jeff, your modesty knows no limits! neither your search of perfection! thanks for such nice work not only on this video but in all the ones you've uploaded.

  • liked it, but this guy really goes nuts on flight of the bumble bee

  • @wingnutofcoolness

its like youll be doomed if you play a bumble bee..

  • Jeff, I've watched 3 of your clips and you are obviously a committed player who's spent many hours practicing... with a metronome. Now turn the metronome off and find the music beyond the notes please. Also, there are other instruments that do a better job of playing high notes... like the guitar. I am a bass player who got bored with bass lines. I've been playing more lapsteel & gt recently, however when I pick up the bass it gives me more perspective. Try it yourself. It helps a lot.

  • @jnsbuggy Jeff plays guitar in addition to bass. He also plays a 7 string fretted which has better high end than the fretless. One thing to remember, this is Bach. To be played properly Bach is played with great precision. After listening to far more than 3 videos by Jeff I believe your assessment of his playing is incorrect. Your criticism only makes you sound pretentious. The only criticism I have is he plays it a little too fast.

  • You just barely crossed the "too fast" line. Theres not enough sustain on the notes, which I blame the tempo and the fact that its fretless.

Played very well though, save for a few pitch problems here and there.

  • I've been playing guitar for about 3 years, and I wonder how it's possible to play with a fretless instrument, and to make it sound in tune ! But you're doing it well, so you've got all my congratulations... You rock !

  • @TheDragonOfMetal Imagine the frets are there and play it like that.

  • @TheDragonOfMetal I play fretless. All I can say is it takes a lot of practice and a good ear while paying close attention to what you are playing. Playing fretless made me a better fretted player because accuracy in fingering gives you a better tone on a fretted instrument.

  • @tbcass For sure it needs a very good ear, (I never played fretless, actually I began playing guitar for about 3 years, and maybe one day I'll play a fretless guitar one day, i hope) ...I think it's really difficult to put the finger at the exact position so I sounds in tune... I've got a question for you... on a fretless instrument, do you have less sustain than on a fretted instrument ? Because the skin of the finger should mute the strings a little bit... Am I wrong ?

  • @TheDragonOfMetal Fretless has less sustain in the high end. When you pluck any stringed instrument there is an apparent increase in the high end because the bass dies off after the initial pluck faster than the higher end. In a fretted instrument this results in a sort of twang low to high. On a fretless the high end dies off shortly after the bass resulting in that distinctive "muah" fretless sound, low, high, low. The sustain at the low end is pretty equal.

  • @tbcass Huh, ok, thank you for the information !

  • great! just great!

  • Super mooi. Thanks

  • soz but i realy don't like that bass

  • how many fucking bass you have???

  • playing fretless is very difficult to do since you don't have the frets to guide you; you have to have the pure knowledge of where each note sounds perfect pitch. luckily he has the dots. Also, without frets, the strings doesn't have the solid bar on which to resonate.

don't hate without proper knowledge of the thing.

  • lil' bit slower, lil' bit clean would be perfect
