“On The Game Needed Me [From 2005’s Menos El Oso], the main sample is literally like – have the bar all the way down, hold the chord, start the sample, hit the chord, bring the bar up, then stop the sample [hear the effect in the song’s intro here]. I don’t do any weird divebombs and pinched harmonics on it. [Laughs]”

thats how dave loops the swooping sound loop. just thought id help out. great vid by the way

  • @hockeyray13 Cool find. I only ever saw one video that captured him making that sample and it wasn't clear what he was doing. Noice.

  • @MrClark86 i noticed in the beginning of you vid of them playing throwin shapes at the vic dave was making the samples of the game needed me

  • @hockeyray13 nice catch, thanks!

  • what do you sample into the right dl4 to make the swooping sound? something reversed?

  • @brandonberg I sampled a slide from 8 / 9 on both the A and G strings. I actually don't think this is correct because I've seen a video of Dave recording this sample before the song and he was using his whammy pedal and I think his hand was in a very different position. However, this sounds pretty correct so it's do-able.

  • @MrClark86 yeah its a crazy sound. thanks for the reply though. i always wondered if there was a keyboard patch mixed in with it too. you can really hear the sample well by itself towards the end of the song where the hits are

  • @brandonberg I'm 99% positive that Matt Bayles used the same-ish notes on his keyboard to play along with Dave's sample.

  • what effects are you using during the chorus? it sounds like you're using some sort of delay but not from your dl4. nice job with the cover by the way.

  • I used to use this multi-effect pedal, I had a delay going there, but I think the actual delay setting in the song is a different timing, something kind of off beat, I don't remember off the top of my head though.

  • I have a question about the functionality of the DL_4. Can you explain to me briefly how you make the loop trigger in reverse, in double time, and how to clear it so you can quickly record and use another?

  • Cheap and Minus the Bear Pedalboard dont go in the same sentence. ever.

  • this is absolutely amazing. (:

  • PLEASE tell me where you got the tabs for this!!!

  • Im about to get a dl4, and it seems quite complicated.

From what Im seeing, you can trigger samples that are stored by clicking the far right trigger?

Is it simple to get em stored and shit?

  • Basically, you set the pedal to "loop station" mode and you can record one sample. You can trigger it either once and then it stops (the middle right button) or you can do a continuous play (middle left button). You can also overdub the sample and play more on top of it.

  • seriously, your channel is the place to be for guitarists who dig minus the bear. you're doing great work here, man.

  • hey other then whats apparent, what other advantages come with having 2 line 6s? and do u think i should in invest in a second one?

thanks and killer vid, minus the bear is my favorite band

  • If you have 2, you can have 2 separate sources of delay, (sweep echo and regular, rhythmic, stereo, whatever....) or one one anything and the other used for warping (MONO style) or have one set to a different instrument. I use my keyboard like that to record bass lines/melodies/etc. You could also get another Boss delay for just about $100, but I really wanted another DL4.

  • thanks keep up the great vids!

  • I'm so proud of you.

Gonna make me save up for a second DL4.

  • Haha, thanks man. I've never regretting buying my second one.

  • why do you need 2 Dl4s? and great job.

  • Are you asking about me personally or the song?

You have to have 2 separate samples to be able to play this correctly. I recorded one chord on one DL4 and a second chord on the other. I'm using the "play once" stomp box. Hope that helps.

  • Hi, nice playing! Im getting a new guitar soon, which one telecaster/stratocaster would be best for tapping in your opinion.

    Thanks

  • Teles and Strats are both really cool. As far as tapping though, it really depends on the individual guitar and how it resonates (think of the power of a single note) mine doesn't really resonate that well so I end up having to boost a lot with a compressor. I would say just test out any guitar that you might be interested in and get some tapping tests going. Tap and hold a few notes to see how long the sustain is.

  • isn't it a bit odd that you're even mimicking dave's leg movements? haha

    just missing the headbanging

  • Ha, it's worse with a few drinks.

  • to be honest.. if i had money to buy another one of those DL4's, i'd be doing exactly the same thing haha

  • haha half the video is just samples

  • Haha. yeah. Dave doesn't "play" the guitar as much in this one, it's mostly his samples.

  • yeah i remember that from seeing them awhile ago. also "the fix" and the end of "pachuca sunrise"

  • Thanks

  • What did you play for the sample on the DL4 on the right?

  • Left DL4 is x00765 and the right one is sliding on the A and G strings from the 8th fret to 9th. It's also harmonized one octave down with a whammy. Hope that helps.

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • once again, VERY awesome.

  • Thanks, I kinda mess up a lot in this, but it's like my 5th time playing the song, so I'll let it go. Dr. L'Ling is NEXT!!!

  • Kickass! I love your videos, keep up the good work!

  • Thanks a lot, I'll try to keep pumping some out each week
