  • how can u cheat death like that its amazing

  • Don't they have toxic skin

  • I think they look really cute! :D

  • Golden Drt Frogs are naturally poisonous and will BOSS you, that's comin' from a taco himself.

  • so their not poisonous, and i thought they were poisonous as hell, even vids say they are the most poisonous animal on land evaah

  • captive bred poison dart frogs are not poisonous just saying, maybe you people should do some research :p

  • For fuck sake. You do NOT have to lick your fingers or have a cut to be poisoned. Contact of ANY sort is enough for being poisoned. This "wounds and openings" thing is total bullshit, an urban myth to make them seem less poisonous. I have no idea why people made that up. But, the frogs are only poisonous in the wild because of the beetles, ants, and mites that they feed on. In captivity they are not poisonous at all.

Posting this to dispel the myth, thumbs up to keep this at the top.

  • national geographic said its only if you have cuts in your hand or if you hold it then put your finger in your mouth or rub your eye

  • Most Poison dart frogs aren't that poisonous, but some, like the metallic green poison dart frog, or The most poisonous, probably Could kill a human. Otherwise if that frog was poisonous, It'd probably kill the idiot that picked it up. Pick up a Very poisonous frog, You'd be so dead XD

  • you were not poisened when you holded it thats soo weird

  • oww rare frog !

  • are they actually poisness

  • @froggieluv97

Yes, but this one was calm.

  • @froggieluv97

    Very

  • why are you still alive??? im glad, but i thought they were poisonous

  • @kortroy

They are. But this one was obviously calm or didn't feel threatened.

  • you must be died by now because u touched it with bare hands

  • @cemgil9876

    See my other comment.

  • wow that one is incredible looking, hope you washed your hands real good

  • He is dead right now probably

  • @OutkastTheCrew .... yes, i am dead and talking to you from the grave.

  • @vegematic

    How's the weather down there?

  • @therealsuperhobo ....the weather is always great here, as long as you like a lot of rain half the year.

  • @therealsuperhobo WTH lol

  • @vegematic LMAO i just love these sarcasms.

but i think that guy has a point, these colorful frogs tend to secrete poisonous chemical from their skin as

some can be deadly as to kill human.

  • @vegematic that's poisonous right??? so u poisoned after touching it???

  • dont if you hold one of those you will die?

  • wow, how your alive?

  • Seems you have a few "fincas". wondering what do you own these fincas for?

hope those frogs are still roaming around...

  • @thelvinc - i own fincas because i like rain forest more than i like money. so when i have a little money, i buy more land. if more people did that, we could probably save a lot more rain forest.

  • interesting where'd you get it?

  • the golden one that lives in colombia is the most dangerous (phyllobates terrribillis)

  • Actually you can touch these frogs, their poison does not penetrate skin, its not like an acid :P Altho suppose you should avoid touching them if you got a wound or so on your hands.

  • And r u still a live ;-)

  • i thought you cant touch them

  • Such a cute frog! And so pretty!!

  • first off, its a really beautiful frog

but im just curious, if its poisonous, how do you hold it?

(im not sarcastic, im really asking)

  • if its captive bred (from a pet shop) then it wont be poisonous, they produce the poison through what they eat in the wild

  • he got relly big balls haha

  • I thought they sweat the poison out of their skin when they're in stress situation. you just shouldn't touch their back or try to eat them.

  • only one poision dart frog is deadly that is a green one. i forgot the name. but the rest of the kinds there poison can only make you ill if eaten. or die if eat like 5 frogs.

  • Wrong, all of the phyllobates species are lethal, not just 'the green one. I'm assuming you are referring to the terribilis which is a mint green, yellow or orange color.

  • lick it^^

  • It does, and this person would be dead within an hour, if the frog were not bred in captivity. In the wild, it eats a particular beetle that possesses the poison. The beetle is safe to pick up since the poison does not seep through it into you, but the frog has an immunity to it and can ingest as many as it wants. Once it does, nothing on Earth can survive touching it except another poison frog.

  • then i guess i must be dead.

  • lol, I think Lassann is a bit confused. He is right that poison arrow frogs derive their poison from their food but the toxins they secrete won't seep into your body simply by touching them.

If someone had rubbed a sharp arrow against their skin and then shot you with it you might be in a little bit of trouble though . :p

  • @Lassann lol the frog is very deadly, but it doesn't shoot out the poison hits body carries. Like most frogs that carry poison's in their body they have pores like sweat glands, and whenever the frog feels threatened, it pushes the poison out of those glands, sort of like a sweat, so that when the animal that is trying to eat it with then ingest the poisons and die, the frog looks relaxed in the video, but I am sure if it was startled much, and the person touched it to his/her lips...dead.

  • @Lassann

I have heard people talk the same shit about cane toads. I have held one, that was 2 years ago. Do some research before you open you mouth.

  • @Lassan hahahahahah good one

  • i thought the poison could sink into your skin but they must be fun to hold anyways

  • Did anyone see the eggs on its back? Very cool find, great video!

  • Those are actually tadpoles, not eggs.

  • Such pretty colours!

  • learn to focus

  • why would u pick that shit up ?!?!?! u know cause its poisonooooooooooouse

  • RETARD WHO WILL DO DAT

  • how do u hold this thing without dieng u must be like a superhuman!

  • okie listen here folks that frog is nt dangerous in captivity it digests it poison from the insects it eats in the wild...it doesn prduce deadly toxin being a housewife avn mosquito's and flies..and remember 1 gram of its toxin is enough to kill 15000 humans...hope i can put in inside the food in my college canteen!!!;-)

  • lol. yah but I don't think anyone keeps a machete in their house. This is obviously in the wild. and 2nd. your figures are off, it is one microgram to 10 fully grown men. and finally the frog that you are refering to that puts out that potent of a toxin is a Phyllobates terribilis which the frog in this video is not. Do not misinform people about such a dangerous thing.

  • no 50 ppl it can kill

  • That frog was not in captivity. I picked that one up in the rain forest. I pick up Phyllobates and Dendrobates all the time here in Costa Rica. I wouldn't do it if I had an open cut on my hand, but I've never had a problem from picking them up and then washing my hands afterwards.

Also, the poison dart frogs in Costa Rica aren't really that poisonous. Some of the ones in Colombia and Ecuador are.

  • How long have you lived in costa rica, and how often do you come across these frogs ?

  • I've lived in Costa Rica for almost five years.

I come across Dendrobates auratus quite a lot - probably every day that I am on my rain forest properties. I also have a property where I see Dendrobates pumilio very commonly - dozens or even hundreds on any given day.

But the frog in the video is much harder to spot. I don't see them very often - just once in a while.

  • Thats good news, are you planning 2 develop your properties or leave then as they are for these little buggers to enjoy?

  • u dont die only if u like lick them and stuff

  • Captive bred darts are NOT poisonious. The poison comes from their diet in the wild and because they are not eating the same things they are not producing the poison.

  • really? well i pick them up all the time. i'm not dead from it yet. been doing it for years.

  • yah unless you are in columbia you don't have to worry about it at all.

  • its because that dart frog isn't very poisonous. however the golden dart frog is the 2nd most poisonous animal in the world. its found in columbia

  • While yes, poison dart frogs can kill you, they can only kill you if the poison gets into your body (ie: you hold one and then lick your finger or if you have a cut on the hand that you're holding it with)... I would know. I have 4 in my room as pets..

  • Then you should know that only 3 species produce a toxin strong enough to kill a human.

  • Ok to the idiots that know nothing about frogs;

Poison Dart Frogs are only poisoness because of their diets. That one was in captivity, that's why it's not poisoness.

And no, you don't need to lick your fingure or have a cut for them to poison you.

  • cool. But what;s the way for them to poison you if you don't have a cut or lick your fingers?

  • this is in the wild

  • I handled wild poison dart frogs in Costa Rican cloudforest a few times, without any cuts on my hand, no problem. So what you're saying can't be correct.

  • @mastershakejb it depends on the kind of posion dart frog. Most of them are not very posionous at all. However, there are a couple of species and ones in particular that I would never want to touch.

  • @jon10408 finally somone who dosent blow this out of proportion just because they have "poison" in there name

  • he might still be alive dart frogs need to eat certain things to become venomous.

  • Won't you DIE?!

  • gawd is he stupid U CAN'T TOUCH POISON DART FROGS CAN U?

  • if they have a different diet cause of the toxins in their skin

  • ohhhhh

  • wow ur so stupid chadman1125 dart frogs r not only blue they can be almost any color pendejo

    DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that was a dumb comment

  • Put That Down!!!!

  • Only thing I can say is, better to be safe than sorry. If you had a very small cut or any amount of broken skin in the area you held it, you would be dead. The lethal dose in humans is about 100 micrograms, or the weight of two grains of table salt.

  • hey....i live here. i've got phyllobates and dendrobates all over the place.

  • you cant touch it when you die only when you put the poison in your mouth you will die

  • yes, i'm dead.

  • Holy crap!.....now we got f*ckin ghosts on youtube! I guess Casper got so friendly that a superstar teleported him to the youtube generation. haha! :) Nice one vegematic.

  • i agree with u!! well since their skin is poisonous---the poison the release gets absorbed by our skin and dats how we die---i guess this guy is dead!

  • real smart dude! ...stupid...

  • dude me and friends saw like 50 and we were like spot them. and they only got like 5 so we were like ur dead! lol

  • um no they do not. these frogs how poison? they can kill 8 people

  • actually this species cant.the golden dart frog can and thats due to the batrachotoxin. its a steroidal alkaloid secreted from glands which blocks the neurotrinsmitters required for autonomic bodily functions such as respiration and the beating of the heart...they do not bite.

  • it is factual that the frog does not produce its own venom but acquires it from a diet of insects which eat highly toxic plants. It is simply metabolized and recycled by the frog. Thats why thay can be kept in captivity with no danger of exposure to the chemical...but good to know you did a lot of reading!

  • also,

" Poison dart frogs excrete alkaloid toxins through their skin"

"The alkaloids are sequestered from prey items, such as ants and mites. Because of this, captive bred animals do not contain significant levels of toxin. However, wild caught animals can maintain toxicity for some time, so appropriate care should be taken when handling such animals."

I'd do some real researrch before telling people off.

So next time shut it, unless you've done your homework.

  • if that had bit u. u would be dead how do i know becasue i read alot. and monkeykid101 the don't get poisones eating ants NO they get it because they wore born with it

  • first of all, frogs don't bite. and, the frogs do produce poison because they eat ants.

  • dude...u must have been on

wikipedia woah ur so fcken smart WICKED

    Fcken dousche >_>

  • you must have been there too if you know he got it off wikipedia

  • I R SMERT CUZ I REEDZ ALOT.

  • Miley, if you had actually READ the facts about these frogs, then you would be saying that YES, they do get their high toxicity from eating certain ants from their enviornment AND they do not bite.

The poison is from their skin!

  • wow... monoclecobra is SMART...I mean SHEESH... philloybate aurateania, phyllobates terriblis, phyllobates bicolor... geez O_o

  • monkeykid101 chill lol

  • wash your hands

  • good job

  • OMG wash your hands after you touch that frog

  • we pick them up all the time. no big deal.

  • you idiot they are poisoness because because they eat poisoness ants in the wild in captivity they dont eat them so they are not poisoness so just shut yo mouth!

  • vay be

  • vay be

  • u need to have a cut for it to intoxicate u , or if u are dumb to grab one then put your finger in your mouth

  • u need to have a cut for it to intoxicate u , or if u are dumb to grab one then put your finger in your mouth

  • id laugh if it fell on its back and killed u

  • LMAO!!!!!!!

  • frogs, cats, all kind of lizards and squirrels are the best animals!

  • those are some of the most beautiful frogs in the world.

  • I picked up a green tree frog once he was cute and cold.

  • where was it?

  • the best posionus animal in world

  • if u change the diet of the frog in captivity it won't become toxic. only if wild and some poison dart frogs arn't as toxic as others. and blue ones u can buy they can become non toxic

  • If you gone to the Amazon they're are 78 different species of frogs that are poisonous.I wanna go there on my summer vacation.

  • I know, that would be my dream vacation!

  • Man thats a risk, if you had the slightest cut in your skin, it would not have ended well.

  • dont touh it you will die!

  • is it dangerous to touch a blue poison dart frog?

  • actually only three species of dart frogs are dangerous to humans which and phlloybates auroteania, phyllobates terriblis and phyllobates bicolor other dart frogs have been recorded to cause extreme pains and other things the basically just make you feel like shit

  • I picked up a frog in Costa Rica and it began secreting moisture from its skin. I got mildly sick the next day- still don't know if the frog had anything to do with it.

  • Aw, so cuuuute!

  • How can they be cute these colorful frogs are poisonous.if it touch to your lip or other openings to your body you will be ended up dead or sick.

  • Did I say they weren't dangerous? No. Just because something's dangerous, that doesn't mean it's not cute. Koalas are cute, but they can also scratch your eye out if they get good and scared.

  • it wont be poisonous if u change its diet of what it eats.i have one, i got it from brazil and im not dead yet and i touched it millions of times.

  • thats true, they are poisonous because of what they eat in the wild

  • hey I would love to go to your forum, have you guys been too jungle2u . com they sell very nice species .

  • i know that poison dart frogs lose their poison when you change their diet but judging by the machette in the backround that thing seems to be wild... so i have one question: did the in the vid die or something?

  • it was in the wild. and, no, we didn't die.

none of the costa rican poison dart frogs are really that toxic. you can handle them. just wash your hands afterwards. and don't eat them. ;-)

  • Very beautiful Vittatus I like the purple fluorescent frog of genus Atelopus The new discovered species the color is just unique I love it. The one you are holding is one of my favs as well great work thanks for posting.

  • ah yes, the new atelopus in surinam! the colors are so amazing that the photo looked photoshopped.

  • oh yeah. we're totally going to find out that it was a gag played by somebody in the graphics department of msnbc. but if not......wow.

  • the colors are amazing I can't get over how amazing they look what a unique color combo.

  • Nice... I want one :) Cool machete too

  • that may be the coolest coloring i have EVER seen on a vittatus. are there lots of them near your finca? with those same green and orange colors?

  • all the vittatus i have seen on the finca look like that one. did you notice the tadpoles on its back?

  • Yeah, I noticed that right away. very cool.

  • of the poison dart frogs, vittatus is the least common on that finca. D. auratus is by far the most common. i have a place up in sarapiqui and D. pumilio are extremely common there....in fact you have to be careful not to step on them when you're walking the trails there.

  • very cool. i spent some time near Horquetas (at La Selva) a few years ago and the d. pumilio were everywhere underfoot. i should have brought a couple back home with me, because they are impossible to find up here. i keep a few dendrobates in a big display terrarium here in new york city. but none are as cool as those red/blue frogs (mostly because they remind me of good times drinking cacique w/ my ticos in CR).

  • i actually have seen pumilio on my property without any blue on them. completely red.

i wonder why they're hard to find in the states. you'd think there'd be all kinds of captive breeding going on.

  • for some reason, the red/blue pumilios are very difficult to breed in captivity.

btw, there is a discussion going as to whether or not the vittatus' legs are really that shade of green. normally they are way more bluish/ aqua-colored. but yours are more toward the yellow side of green, than the blue side. some say the camera must be inaccurately representing the color. but the plants look correct, so i'm guessing that the frog's colors are probably correct.

  • where is the discussion of the vittatus happening? i'd love to join in.

  • i posted a link to your vid on Dendroboard, a forum for poison dart frog enthusiasts, in the "General Discussion" forum.

  • Wasn't it dangerous to hold?

  • no. dangerous to eat though.

  • AW! IT'S SO CUTE AND BEAUTIFUL (with the colors, it's really pretty!) Thanks for that!
