Maurice White says it best at 2:56 - "We're talking about groove personified."
I was a 10 year old white kid in Connecticut in 1975. This stuff was SO FUNKY - that it probably scared me back then. As a grown musician, I can NOW appreciate just how great this is. Such a level of "tightness" with a dozen instruments requires a brilliant leader like Maurice White. The Beatles still effected my head the most - but this music targets the lower half of your body. Amazing.
if you listen to the lyrics they were way ahead of their time..since the earth revolves around the sun hence mighty people of the sun...always a positive message in their music, incredible vocals unlike any other you hear today and the music is out of this world
EWF ARE MY FAVORTIES. i am a 60's child, so i saw them in D.C. IN THE 70'S. They are still rockin!!!!!!! I SEE THEM ON MY BIRTHDAY WHENEVER THEY ARE NEAR. I'M AN AC,NJ GIRL
What a jammin' band, but Verdine is skinnier than me! I bet Maurice yawns musically and Phil Bailey sounds like he swalled a trumpet. Wow! We need more of this music today.
As a huge EW&F, I can listen to their live performances and never grow tired. Their music puts in you a good place and the lyrics are inspirational, always are. God bless Maurice White for being the phenomenal musician that he is.
i'm away on business sitting in my hotel room and this is just touching my soul. Man, I can never get enough of this group, I sure wish I could get a DVD with all of their live performances. Grew up with these brothers and fell in love from the first time I heard the Spirit album..hooked ever since
During the 60's the voices of our people were silenced, afterwhich EWF came with a higher realm of conciousness: Veganism, Spirituality, Truth, They reigned as a supergroup impacting the whole planet universally, ushering in the Messianic age. Our people were coming of age. What state of mind would you say our children have today, in whose interest would it be for us to sleep on in decadence?
So what killed the quality of musical artists like the ones born out of the '70s, '60s and .50's. It seems that my generation did a poor job of carrying on the tradition. But why? Is it because the synthsizer made musicans lazy? Or are there more distractions than before (like cable TV). I really would like to know what killed the quality of music. It can't simply be blamed on rap, because there are no new Led Zepplins, Eagles, Beatles or AC/DC's either.
@hankaaron1961 My friend, After black leaders were silenced in the 60's came EWF with a higher statae of conciousness. Veganism, spirituality, return to truth of who we really are as a people. This pacified the people, ran parallel with the beginning of the messianic age. Our people were coming out of their 400 year stupor. ask yourself in whose best interest is it for us to go back to sleep corruptly. the music that came after this era has created a degenerate mindset in the youth of today!
During the 60's the voices of our people were silenced, afterwhich EWF came with a higher realm of conciousness: Veganism, Spirituality, Truth, They reigned as a supergroup impacting the whole planet universally, ushering in the Messianic age. @hankaaron1961 what changed? the true quality of life changed. money became the anthem of the 80s. yuppies, buppies, crack! and apathy as human beings about the overall human condition. music is born of the spirit, when the spirit dies the music dies. but i wont dismiss rap. it has been a tool used to numb the soul. the question is who wields the tool.
The music industry killed creativity in the music; the younger generation has conformed and intermittently agreed to be slaves to the industry. Blues, Rock, soul, rap was started by a generations that waited for no one: Especially the music industry.

You can spend your WHOLE life trying to be this funky - and you will fall short. Trust me! They just make it look easy. Maurice White must have been some kind of genius.
That bass player keeps that groove going even when he's kicking his legs up at the end !! Amazing !
Does anyone but me think that when they say " we are the people of the sun" they are really saying " of the son" Jesus Christ, because the chorus says people of the body, which is the church?
does anybody have the show when they host the midnight special . they do six songs and labelle is their guest . contact me !!! if you have the 1976 concert on video , you are a magician !!!
I love EW&F for obvious reasons but also because their music conjures up sentimental feelings from my childhood. I was born in '68 so most of their early 70's music was out during my elementary school years and I can remember playing thier albums on my little record player and hearing my older family members playing the same albums on their big sound systems. I can remember being driven to school and listening to their songs on the radio. What sweet memories.
ty 4 your reply .and always Yes only the professional soul train dancers can dance 2 this song and many more.just look at the rest of the soul train dancers 2 many more great music on soul train and Only the soul train dancers r forever the best coz no one now can ever dance this great way agin ,unless they was born in this time. this style professional kind of dancing with their best looking style of clothes as well ...
oh one more thing 2 say 2 u >i have a family member couplecomes from this soul train time and i love watching them dance as a couple coz they come only from this great time of real dancing real music ... and i actually c soul train alive in my home not just clips .wow ! i get happy every time i c them dance .!
As the 21st Century came around, Mint Condition was the only R&B/Funk band signed to a Major Record Label. After a six year hiatus, the group resurfaced as a quintet due to former member and keyboard player Keri Lewis leaving the group to produce for other artists, such as his wife, singer Toni Braxton
Music change...everything don't stay the same....But most of those bands are still today touring on the road and they don't play anything New they play what made them !!...only the Isley Bro & Charlie Wilson have been recording new stuff and is it the same 2 u ?? so what's your point on your question ??
EW&F was my first concert ever; they performed in Seattle at the King Dome, 1976 or 77. Went with my friend Carol Wright. I got a black t-shirt with the symbol on it.
I haven't seen that cover in years so I forgot about that spinnig drums. I meant to say that the hi hats on "Sun Goddess" was Fred and the dynamics of course was Ralph. My personal favorite on that album. And the guitar solo by Johnny on "Shining Star what'nt bad either.

I remember being at summer camp in '71 as a seven year old, and this song was always on BLAST all through the gym of that community center. Great, great song. An anthem in many respects. Anything by Maurice and his brothers is very close to my heart.
Earth, Wind & Fire fans, type the following in the search box above - Earth, Wind & Fire (1/21) - Shining stars (Documentary) Type it in exactly like that. Watch all parts & spread the word. It's a great documentary!
This is one of my favorite songs by Earth Wind and Fire! I heard it for the first time a few weeks ago on a "Soul Train" re-run, and I've been hooked since!
Wow...Im into Metaphysical studies...now and Im just begining to understand the deep meaning of there songs...I know its always been about Love and good feelings, but back in the day I was just singing them with out truly understanding it in my heart. Dont get me wrong you can understand the meaning of the songs..without being a metaphysician. I think this was one of the main intents of this group is to put good vibrations into the ether for the healing of the world.

i had the pleasure of meeting EWF this past summer, they are the coolest dudes in the world.especially verdine.verdine and i kicked it like we knew each other for years.truly a class act,and one of the greatest bands of all-time.
That's right - it was 74. I saw them at the Hollywood Palladium that summer and it was right before "That's the way of the world" came out. That's what this video reminds me of. I'll never forget it. It was teh best show I ever saw!
"Walk Around, Why wear a frown? Say little people, try to put you down. What you need is a helpin hand, All is ready at your command, How's your faith? Cuz your faith is you! WHo ya kiddin, to yourself be true!" What amazing and inspirational lyrics! MY favorite band!
Just a minor note: "All the strength at your command" is the correct lyric.
Part of the next verse: "Whatcha gonna do 'bout your living thing? Will you make it better, or just complain? Every day is real, don't run from fear. 'Cause better days are very near. There are times when you're bound to cry. One more time -- head to the sky!"
This performance looks strikingly similar to their performances on Bert Sugarmann's Midnight Special(1975). Right down to Verdine's pink shirt. check it out. thanks for posting, I'm interested in any vintage EWF concerts you have.
Incredible!!!
