I have so much respect for this man. His translation of the Quran is amazing, I was just reading it once again. Its sad that his work is banned in some places. May Allah (swt) grant him paradise.
This man is a huge influence in my studies of Islam and explained it so eloqently, I became a muslim myself. May Allah rest his soul, he was one of the best Islamic Thinkers of our time and he is deeply missed
Mohammad Asad (Leopold Weiss) was a great writer and an enlightened thinker. In his translation of “The Message of The Qur’an” - which is a translation for the thoughtful, who is willing to take a refreshing look - Mohammad Asad gives an interestingly rationalized translation and commentary. He has also written “Islam at the Cross Roads," the whole of which I have read and enjoyed reading; and, I wish every Muslim read it, especially the youth.
Muhammad Asad studied Islam in a traditional way, under traditional scholars, and using traditional methodologies. It's not correct to label the Saudi perspective and methodologies of Islam as "traditional" and assuming that the "sufis" and non Saudi view of Islam are not traditional. Really, you just have to look at the sources and scholars that the different camps refer to.
Muhammad Asad is regarded as one of the last great scholars of his time (the late 19th century).

So, several months have passed, and still no one has uploaded the rest of the footage...what a pity...hope this will be soon changed and the rest of the video uploaded inchaAllah
well, monotheist originated is central Asia ,then the idea was borrowed by exiled jews while they were living in captivity in Persia , then later this idea was borrowed by mohammed with the help of jews and persians
its the reason that Judaism exactly looks like Zoroastrianism and islam looks like Judaism
@1seabird1 "monotheist originated is central Asia" No it didn't you ignorant tool. The first monotheistic faith was created in Egypt by Tutankhamun's father Akhenaten, 3500 years ago.
well , Zoroastrianism is at least 1500 years older than that ,and don't forget the role of Nefertiti in forming Aten , interestingly , she was not Egyptian and some scholars attributes her to Indo-European Mittani tribe.
I really like Muhammad Asad he's great scholar, I have his translation of the Koran I really like it because he puts a rational, progressive interpretation of Islam while staying with the essential beliefs, the Saudis usually will ban anything that doesn't agree with their puritanical interpretation of Islam. His translation appeals to me because I'm a thinker, plus I have a mixed Muslim/Christian family and so I grew up open-minded and try to balance my spiritual life with my worldly life.
i wish we muslims shia and sunna start realizing that we are muslims and not considering one anther as kafirs
we all say la ilaha ila laah muhammed rasululaah the wilayah of ali shouldnt be a big isue to the shias
as sunah dont believe in that wiliah but love ali from the bottom of our hearts then
sunnas should be left to be judged by Allah and only Allah if we sunas are going to hell for denying that wilayah then so be it i know i love ali saifulaaaaah
No, he criticized aspects of Shia theology in "Road to Makkah" and probably other works that I can't remember. He was not anything except Muslim and examined each so-called fact independently of what source it came and regardless of the stigma or praise associated with it.
Thanks, but could you tell me if Sunni Muslims would say the same thing? In other words, would they say he was an orthodox Muslim? Isn't his translation of the Qur'an banned in Saudi Arabia? Thanks in advance for your response.
I don't think there is anything about him that takes him out of the fold of Sunni Islam. I don't know about his translation of the Qur'an being banned in KSA; it's possible, but he was also very close friends with the Royal Family. Keep in mind there are a lot of books banned there, or at least disliked by their scholars.
There are some issues with his translation, though with most translations. My Sheikh (who is Sunni) recommended his translation with many clarifications (i.e. he often leans towards esoteric tafsirs even when it is not necessarily justified) but he is still most definitely considered Sunni.
@Ousias1 It seems like you do not get it then because it is related to your question. I said that because you were making an example with Saudi Arabia. Yes Saudi is mainly sunni, and many people there pretend to be orthodox, but many of them are nothing else but extremists. The people like Muhammad Asad represent the real Islam, be sunni or shite. I am very sorry if you feel like i am replying to your question with something that has nothing to do with.
@Ousias1 Hi, literal translation of Qur'an is banned by most Sunnis, and this is accepted by many scholars. However, the translation of the meaning of the Qur'an is allowed and accepted, and usually followed in Saudi Arabia, as in other parts of Islamic world. Muhamed Asad is a Sunni convert; he was an Austrian Jew before his conversion. After his conversion, he married a Saudi woman, spend 6 years in Saudi and then moved to Indian Sub-continent.
Asad ...a great man...may Allah give him blessing and highest places in heaven...Actually i am a Pakistani Muslim became agnostic in my college days but reading his book " road to mecca" i reconverted to my old religion i-e Islam and being Muslim i am proud of. than x to Allah.
Sam,you are partially right. It's Qur'an actually though Islam is used concomitantly for a kind of distinction as a religion. Qur'an I believe contains God's highest ideals for mankind and it's the Qur'an which is in God's personal protection. Being saved from eternal losses and utter despair in the next life will be the true safety. Muhammad Asad was a classic gift of God to the world in general and to Muslims in specific. A doc movie is made on him by some George Misch. I wish I'd done that.
does any one has the rest of this show?i read his book last week and really felt unlike what i thought (like most of iranians that they are uncultured and lizard eater got lots of oil ),they are great people and now i feel how close i was to know them but had blind ideas about them!
If only Asad was around today to take apart the Islamophobic media today. We have very good scholars to do it, but Asad is a masterful communicator that gets his message through in intuitive terms.
Why are we looking around for someone to defend Islam/Muslims? There are about 55 Muslim majority countries and about 1.2 billion Muslims--so are Muslims collectively not able to defend themselves? If we are so weak, then one person is not going to be able to do much for us....
You're absolutely right. I didn't mean to say that there isn't anyone or people to do it. I'm just saying Asad was a special person. It's like missing Michael Jordan on your basketball team. You know?
Is it just me or did Mr.Asad says in the beginning of the video: "All monotheistic religions started in the desert".
But Christianity came from somewhere in Palestine or Syria not from the desert Arabia. The oldest church in the world is located somewhere in that area also.
I've surprised no one commented about this before. Video has been up for a year, I'm sure some Christians have seen it and realized something was wrong with that statement...

Never been there,Bethlehem, but Iwas under the impression that most Israel/Palestine area is green with valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes.just like coastal+central parts of Syria+Lebanon
According to Bethlehem page on Wikipedia, "Bethlehem has a Mediterranean climate"
Is Bethlehem really a desert with fine sand and sandDunes ?
{Or is it similar to "Syrian desert" (AKA Badiat-Asham) which is mostly arid+semi-arid plateau composed of rocky limestone,rather than a true sandy desert}
Well..Sinai,Negev and Petra are all deserts and connected to Arabian desert and there were no boarders that time and people were nomadic people . maybe this is the westerners concept of the middle east

@Ousias1 to benefit from Quran you have to read it with a blank mind with no bias and pre-conceptuations.
that is exactly what Muhammad Asad did.
thats why his translations are banned in Saudi Arabia.
