  • Really don't see too much point in GPU folding. They use considerably more power and give lower research value, making them a bad proposition when looking at PP/W and PP/$.

My 2600K at 4.4GHz regularly gets 30K PPD on smp8. It'd take two GTX 560 Ti to match it, and they'd pull around 400W at the wall while my 2600K only pulls 125W. I guess the benefit is that it's more convenient.

  • what about 2 gtx 260's? do i need to make an account on the site to downloads stuff?

  • I was wondering if anyone can fold for my school.....its one of my projects and im supposed to go around and ask people to do it, but thats just way to hard soooo many go away's...........so i was wondering if anyone can fold for me just till 100,000 doesnt seem like to much........well here it is

  • im at 630k :)

  • Now days just use gpu tracker

  • What's with the credits?

  • Would this work for other GPUs, like GTX 260's?

  • some dude on my team is ranked 50th, 10e = loser.

  • Will this work with a male to female vga adapter and the resistors in the same way? Thanks.

  • This is a much, much better use for graphics cards and a high end CPU than video games.

    WHOA!! ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!

  • what accent is that ?

  • Hmm, the link on your forum seems to be dead. Trying to get my 8800's up and folding soon!

  • What is the point in this -.-?

  • Darn it...I have everything but the resistors...and there isn't a Radioshack near where I live...shucks x(

    Oh well...

Is there an alternate way (if at all) to make this multi-GPU client work without the need of resistors? I'm currently running only one, which is ok for now.

The "-gpu x" command alone doesn't do very much without tricking the plug.

  • Comment removed

  • idk why you had to create those dummy plugs. I can fold on my second video card without having it plugged into a monitor or enabled.

  • @a0ne0ne

there have been driver updates since then

  • I hope "mylovelybabe" remembers to wear his/her tin foil hat every day...

  • help somebody i have many trobules with asus p6t7 when I try install a sas over windows 7 x64 any ideas, i ready try with marvell 61xx/63xx drivers in asus web install. please thanks!

  • i currently have an 295gtx but it only uses 1 "core" for folding how can i enable it to use both?

  • @mylovleybabe

    hehe you're silly

  • Um, they can't use protein synthesis for weapon research. You can't even spell research. . . .

  • but u CAN kiss my ass and thats just great

  • why do i need to fold? i did not get it....i run 2x gtx260 core 216 sli...do i need that?

  • folding@home is a research project where your computer (along with everyone else's) with basically help each other break down the work load of medical research so we can understand the folding of proteins folding. Which will key in finding cures for cancer and many other illnesses.

  • There are MANY "@home" projects out there, you actually can choose which project(s)to contribute to. E.g. SETI@HOME (Search for extraterrestrial intelligence @ Home).

  • folding is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases.

  • what is folding?

  • Ok, what exactly is folding, and what does it have to do with your computer and video card?

  • Thanks for the awesome video Trubritar! Now I've got my 295 folding. :)

  • mate, if ya just have a single GPU X2 card do both video outputs need to have something connected or do dual GPU cards fold fine on both GPUs with only one monitor connected?

  • sorry.. forgot that GTX280's are single GPU cards ;)

  • will fold with only i monitor im pretty shure

  • is there a way to let it utilize multiple cores?

  • what exactly does folding do??kinda new at this

  • Researching protein to help cure cancer.

  • Hey tribby, can you please make a file on your site for 2 gtx 280's. thats what I got on my system

  • Trubritar I've made a few of these Computer Glider's and sold them locally for $40.00. Tell me what you think of them and please rate.

  • trubrit i got it to work. after many months of fidgeting, its now completed two work units without crashing. i overclocked the memory to 1000 mhz, and underclocked the gpu clock from 770 to 750. i have no idea how this solved it, but it did. yay!

  • lizzyaston, higher memory clocks dont improve performance when folding.

  • I know.

  • can anyone tell me whats the benifit for this folding thingy?

    thixx

  • F@H runs simulations of proteins, the tiny little molecules in our bodies that cause many different things, sometimes however, it goes wrong, and the proteins do the wrong thing.

F@H hopes to work out why.

  • the benifit is the joy in helping out solve medical problems :)

    The competition isn't bad either!

  • doesn't it say on the F@H website how to enable multiple clients on one of their FAQs? its like add -gpu N (N standing for numbers 0-3 depending on how many gpus you have)

  • can you do one on the Console Clients?

or do yuo have to do the same thing like you did in the video

becuase right now i have a 9600gt and im going to get a evga gtx 260 core216 ssc and i wanna keep my 9600gt as my dedicated physx / folding gpu and i dont use the tray client i use the console ones because its more efficient and you get more ppd

    Thanks

  • When you run different Cards fold at the same time, it reduces the PPD, last I remember.

  • It doesnt anymore if it did before, if you get 8000 a day with one gpu then three cleints on 3 gpus will give you 24k a day.

  • Im almost sure if you have 3 DIFFERENT gpu's it will acctualy produce worse PPD

  • is that money or wut?

  • NO that is Points Per Day. Rather than judge someones folding performance in Work Units, which would be unfair due to the difference in size and complexity of particular WUs, it makes more sense to assign a points system that awards more for more effort and less for less.

  • But you can play games while one is fold and that wont do any thing, its only if your folding on both at the same time I think...

  • well yeah of couse im going to be folding both of them at the same time

but only one while im gaming

  • nice

  • how do I install folding@home to my BOINC manager? it's not on the list, and I'm not sure if I should really install and run another one of these progs, any advice would be helpful

  • alot of the foldign farms i've seen dont use the dummy plugs you've added are they definitely necessary?

  • if you use XP, then they are not needed...if you are using Vista or W7 they are.

  • You are welcome...Fold on....

  • @trubritar Can you put out a new video for the new client for the gtx 480's??? Can you also do it to refresh peoples memory abour folding@home? My brother has austism and i want to use my 2 gtx 480's to fold simultaniously. I would really appreciate it. Thanks Trub!!!!

  • with my ATi gpu, i keep getting vpu crashes. i have the latest firmware. i even set the fan to 100 percent and underclock it, and set it at only 70 percent usage. but still, i get vpu crashes. anyone know how to fix this?

  • What Driver are you using...Also your GPU Version #...

    Trub

  • dont know why you decided to go to america, away from the UK, but oh well...

    CCC version 9.6 and a 4870 1gb, F@H 6.23

  • Get the latest Catalyst 9.7 and don't underclock the GPU, also set the usage to 100%. I hope this helps...

  • nah ive got 95% and overclocked memory, which somehow works. thanks for the help tho.

  • entersting

  • What does Folding mean?

  • its a simulation designed to predict how different proteins fold

  • You are so awesome.

  • Great video Trubritar!!

  • I remember i took physics for school one year, what a load of shit.

But yet i cant help but think i should have took it again . Why am i talking about this anyway,

awesome vid trubitar, the DIY way lol, pretty sure Maxishine didn't have this problem with his endless supply of monitors, fucking hate him.

  • one year of physics? don't be TOO educated nigra.

  • When you clipped the ends of the resistors, they disappeared. What happend? :P lmao.

  • BTW, thank you so much Trubritar, I have been trying to find a way to do this, and looked up doing it this way on the interent but still had unanswered questions, this helped me tremendously sir, thank you.

  • 190.38 gave me issues where I would boot up my computer and the resolution would be set as 640x480 when it's usually 1440x900(native res).

  • just set it back to native freaking dump ass o.0

  • Because setting it to native every single time the PC booted up wasn't annoying at all.

  • yOU are the best overcloker i even seen

  • Um sorry but i always see this folding at home and always wonered what it was could anyone give me an answer to what it is because im lost

  • good vid

  • only if you the kind of person who turns your computer off when you aren't using it. Also think of the money spent on electricity as charity. not only are you dedicating time to find cures for many diseases but also money. So no, it isn't a waste of electricity to me having had 2 friends get testicular cancer, a grandpa with prostate cancer, and know a few friend's with grandma's and grandpa's and even a friend with a DAD who all have Alzheimer's. This really is a good thing. :)

  • wat does folding @home do. i dont understand why u shold fold@home

  • google should be ur best friend

  • folding numbers to find cures for cancer and other diseases.

  • @stillframe182 ......you're not folding numbers, you are folding PROTEINS!!

  • more like raise money for it

  • What the hell is he doing o.O

  • I don't get it. Does it enable the other cards to run fully? Or under No-SLi? Or...

    I'm confused.

  • Nornmally to run three clients u need three monitors one connected to each gpu.

This method is for people with multi gpus but maybe only one monitor, it fools the gpu into thinking one is connected.

  • 3 clients? What clients?

And thanks for clearing that up.

  • tnx for the knowledge =]

  • trub fold when hes not gaming :D but, awsome tut, nice done ;)

  • what if that for

  • Great tips, I must say thought Internet Explorer? Come on.

  • yeah

  • sorry for the noob question but whats folding?

  • Fantastic video- but what team is 143164? I fold for EVGA (111065)

  • Team 143164 is the Trubritarforum folding team...Thanks

  • ahahahhaah fucking nvidia WHY ARE YOU STILL BUYING FROM THEM

ati=put the cards in put the bridges in and your done!

and if you have sli in vista with 2 monitors IT DOESNT WORK!

    nv=fail

  • you got wrong info make research and than comment.

  • no ACTUALLY i dont...... lets see were im wrong cock sucker

    go prove me wrong

  • i see you anger, thats because you are not right and you trying to show right which is not

  • PROVE ME WRONG or GTFO

  • as i said to previous comment google doesnt hurt

  • AS I SAID IN ALLL THE PREVIOUS COMMENT

    PROVE MMMEEEEE WROOOONG! OR GTFO

    GTFO!!!!!!!!!!!

im not responding enless you have bitch

  • hmm...are you 12 years old?

  • Awesome video

  • sorry.but wtf is folding@home?

  • you connect your computer to a network to let other people use your unused resources for disease research.

  • what do u mean buy disease research???

  • Research on disease?

  • why would I do research with Gaming rig??

  • Here's what you do.. click the little X at the top right of your screen.

That's what you want to do.

  • epic fail at life.

  • Whenever you're not gaming... lol

  • google doesnt hurt

  • can u make some files for multiple ati cards? or could i just use those. I think ati has a different client to nvidia.

  • The Files are configured to work with ATi GPU's also, you will need an ATi GPU that's classed R6XX or later.

Turn off Crossfire or Crossfire X and conduct the same process as with the Nvidia cards :)

    Hope this helps. Happy Folding

    Trub

  • oh thats great! I'll get my 4870s folding!

  • ishnookie thats a bit of an obvious question trubritar has the better rig by far. Rod don't even have water cooled GPU's I don't think.

  • Hey Trubritar! who do you think has a better killer ass rig? YOU or RODNEY? (3DGAMEMAN)

  • for the first time ever I was lost watching one of your videos I had to watch it 2x to understand what folding does

  • Credits? Do you get money for doing this?

  • Nope...No money, just the comfort of knowing I may of helped someone...Both with folding and someday a cure for diseases....

Hope this helped you also, especially if you Fold often.

    Thanks

    Trub

  • hee hee

  • Nice Guide! Best yet.

  • wow mate thats alot of PPD

im thinking of making a server comp with a GPU client (since a server is ran by the CPU, i thought id put in something like a 9800 GT to fold 24/7

  • Each 9800GT will provide you 3k - 7K PPD depending on the complexity of the project being folded.

  • Just one noob question.. what does that program do?

  • Check out the link @ 0:42

    Thanks

  • Great vid and thanks! :D

  • what is folding?

  • For More info on Folding@Home, check out the link posted in the video @ 0:42

    Thanks

    Trub

  • WOW 22k PPD! My multicore CPU client can only do 2300 PPD but anyway I'll join your team

  • Thanks for joining our Forum Team...Now "Fold Like a Bandit"...

    Trub

  • 7:28 runaway icon!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YES YES ur back great job. awesome video as usual. i mean above awesome! 5/5 great ...

  • Can you run a CPU client and a GPU client at the same time on the same computer?

  • yes

  • dude i got the same snips as you loool

  • One question? I know foldings takes alot performance of your hardware but does this also count for your internet conection? I have a second pc wich download always stuff while i be on my main pc. I am thinking about running folding on it.

  • A folding PC will need an internet connection.

This Internet connection will only be required for uploading complete projects and downloading new tasks.

A blazing fast connection wont be needed.

    Hope this helps...

    Trub

  • cool, now what exactly is folding? =P

  • For more info on folding, check out the link on the video @ 0:42

    Thanks

    Trub

  • Nice video Trubritar. although when i set up my 2 cards, and start FaH twice(+1 for CPU) i still get the same performance for each FaH GPU as if i only ran one FaH app.

  • Download the File in the video and try running 2 of the 3 clients. You will need a dummy plug or monitor linked to the 2nd card, also ensure SLi is turned off.

Let me know if it works out :)

    Trub

  • I was in a hurry when i wrote that comment... What i meant is if i run 2 Folding Clients, it seems it automatically selects one GPU per client. gives me no difference in running 1 or 2 clients of Folding.(same speed on both of them). though i'll be testing this one out. Good Tutorial!

  • getting a msi mobo that has 4 pci-e slots and putting a very cheap cpu and a 4 9600gso cards it would be the best choice

  • Even better would be buying some cheap 9800 GX2 cards form ebay.

  • couple of 9600gso's > 9800gx2

  • you can't sli more than 2 9600 cards.

  • Yes but there are some 9800 GX2's that are ridiculously cheap on ebay. Also one 9800 GX2 performs slightly better than two 9600GSO's.

  • u dont need to sli

folding dosnt work with sli havent u seen the vid

  • ah, you didn't say it was for folding.

  • the video is about folding :|

the reply i made was to a person concerned about folding and budget etc

  • If I recall correctly, folding@home runs protein folding simulations so that we can better understand and can find cures for prion diseases such as Alzheimer's and Mad Cow Disease. I've heard optimistic claims, like we could possibly find cures by 2020 at the current rate.

  • Because I'm originally from the UK but now live in the USA...

    Trub

  • thx man 4 the link

  • What is folding exactly?

  • Hi there,

For more info on Folding, its uses and purpose, feel free to visit the link posted at the beginning of the Vid: 0:42

    Thanks Trub

  • What I have gathered on the internet and wikipedia, it has something to do with molecular dynamics... (whatevery that might be..)

  • YAY!

  • i still dont get what folding is what is it whats the point

  • same here, he didn't go into much detail...

  • Great video!

  • What is folding? I've always wondered....

  • that is one NICE intro!

    especialy the robot arm thingy

  • Awesome vid Trub!

  • been a while since your last vid

  • Cool vid! i like the intro, how did you make it?
