you wont believe the story i can tell. in san jose, 1981, this album cover was used in either a radio station commercial or a record chain commercial. John lennon was murdered. So they made reference to it, BY USING THIS ALBUM COVER. they had the naked guy shoot the guy in the suit WITH A LASER, the guy in the suit falls off the album cover, through the WHO "TOMMY" cover, onto THE WHO "WHO'S NEXT album cover, knocking over the members of the who on the cover. Complete with sound effects. TRUE!
I honestly just cried listening to this. I just don't understand how music can be so good, and even further confused as to how this kind of music is so underappreciated, especially in today's time of "music."
I haven't seen this spinning in ages.I was called nigger every day on the way to school when this came out. and Nigger on the way home from school. And you know the only kids that didn't throw things and call me names were the kids who wore Rush tee-shirts and treated me with respect. Having those kids to show friendship to me when no one else would...I considered those people to have been real friends as well as civil rights activist.. i was able to live.and go to class not in fear.Thank you!

RHOF is a senseless popularity contest plagued with 'musical acts' and 'artists' who lack real talent.
RUSH transcends so much of what is wrong today in the music industry. At this point, an induction into the RHOF would be an insult and I desperately hope that the gentlemen we know as the band RUSH would decline graciously; stating that the recognition was just too long overdue for them to care. RUSH IS PEERLESS!!!!!!
@TheTraci1968 I think they'd accept and show up to the ceremony. And I don't think it's something that really gets declined, although some bands have declined to show up to the awards ceremony, like the Sex Pistols. But I still don't think that it would be a disgrace to Rush, when you consider all the great bands like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Cream, and all the great R&B and blues artists who were the precursors to rock who have been inducted along with all the lesser bands.
@StrogenZalec9456 the same rock and roll hall of fame that madonna is in? yeah fuck them...i'll just continue to enjoy truly great rock musicians and won't give a fuck who else believes it
I think my favorite part of listening to this, is the fact the space between songs is what I learned---and knew. When listening on CD, there is too much space between the cuts. This version feels right, and makes my inner child smile. The crackles remind me of my youth---not the same crackles on my overplayed and abused recording---but close enough. Thank you for posting a version which I can truely relate to.
God, LISTEN TO THAT BASSLINE! No matter how many times I listen to this song, the bass still blows my mind. The whole thing blows my mind, but the bass especially...
Awesome! Something about Vinyl is hard to describe, it may be the lack of dynamic range not found today on digital, but dang even with the compression and low frequency roll off below 500 Hz, it sure was a great era...
Rush didn't make into the mainstream because the general population are shallow thinking sheep. I don't mean to sound to harsh, but Rush has been played on the radio and sell out concerts. Its just a natural weed out process. Simple minded people don't gravitate towards it. I think its fantastic because when you go to a Rush concert its a collection of the coolest people. No morons there just because they're the latest MTV darling, its soley about the music and everyone is totally focused
Boy you need to learn how to set the needle down softly, great post nut no wonder the Record is full of crackles, you need to be softer then that with a record
I was watching the "beyond the lighted stage" documentary, and found it funny when they said that on Hemispheres, they made music that was "beyond them", or something to that effect. They are far too modest.
@Colddeed Dude.. thats not the sound of it being placed down, thats the sound of it seating into the groove. and i never drop the needle in the middle of a track. the crackles are because. A) i bought it second hand with crackles, and B) because picture discs aren't usually meant to be played as much as looked at.
@bryceHUHwhat Where did you get that picture disk, and how much did it cost you? I've been looking for one for a long time...Hemispheres is my second favorite Rush album, and I'd love to have the picture disk in addition to the regular vinyl record.
@nongthip My theory about Rush's lack of mainstream success is because the lengthy pieces of music like Hemispheres or even Xanadu were simply too long for airplay...ie. they were'nt "radio friendly". That's OK in my book because I feel that, had Rush broken into the mainstream it would've ruined them artistically. They ARE getting their recognition these days though and everyone is becoming aware of how great their work was, and is.
After 2112 Rush fans were expecting a lot. Then after the pop-heavy Closer to the Heart single, in 1980 they Got Permanent Waves which also went radio-popular. Still I think Hemispheres got unjustly lost somewhere in that. Great album! Maybe for the above reasons I like it even more. Moving Pictures isn't the start of Rush's epic synth-rock, this is!
@TheParadoxQueen Good 4 U 4 choosing Led Zep, Sabbath, Rush etc. over Lady GaGa and other modern pop crap. The bands/artists U name are talented and intelligent musicians...there will never be any new bands like them. Trust me, your peers will eventually end up with Rush & Sabbath by the time they're 40! Might I also suggest you check out Jimi Hendrix?
My God...I've forgotten how much I loved this old stuff when I was about 14 or 15...after decades of all kinds of "other" music, it's amazing how familiar it feels and how great it sounds. I'm gonna start looking for old vinly copies at the used shops!
And @beelzabubba ...yes, vinyl is pure analog ie. real sound reproduction and digital will never achieve the realism & fidelity of vinyl and vacuum tubes!
RUSH - One of the greatest bands in history and one of the most underrated. Along with "Caress Of Steel", "2112" and "A Farewell To Kings" this is one of my favorite albums. But I like all their albums. Musicians extraordinaire!
Thanks for taking the time to upload this. If you watch the Rush documentary - Beyond the Lighted Stage - they say that after this album was made they would never attempt something like this again. It took too much out of them.
I could play every dam note of this tune on my gee-tar in 78. As well as 2112 and most other Rush tunes. Definately a musicians band. Most other people just didn't get it.
Ahh, I love the part at 2:07. Still gives me chills.
Gawd this music took us on journeys. And each person who heard it, had a slightly different journey. The valley of the Necromancer looked different to each person who heard the song.
i just watched the rush documentary on vh-1 last night.i had forgotten how great they actually are, they seem like extremely nice, genuine, grounded, artist's.i mean c'mon alex lifeson was on trailer park boys.it was very refreshing to see true musicians (whom todays instrument players swim in their wake)and more importantly 3 very close friends.
Wow! It's been years since I've heard this. I think the band has been working too hard to write songs these past several albums. With this you can tell the ideas just flowed. Steve Slaton, an AOR DJ in Seattle, dubbed Rush a "thinking man's rock band". Along with Queensryche. I a now an engineer. Go figure.
Neal Peart is one trippy dude to come up with these lyrics. He used to be a disciple of Ayn Rand. I'm not sure if he still is. Ayn Rand was a hard core libertarian from the last century.
Dude, you are awesome for posting this. I feel like such a complete dumbass for being one of the so many fools who got rid of my LPs. What the hell was I thinking??
It's an awesome album. I won this album in a radio contest while on vacation in Florida. The same kind you've got, the Picture-disc...Too bad it makes the sound quality a little bit worse! Ah well...thanks for posting this!
woah - where did you get that sweet LP? i have "hemispheres" on vinyl and it doesnt have the album art on the disc.....yours must have been a special limited thing? thats pretty cool!
I have always loved this Band since I was 10. Moving Pictures had just come out. It took no time for me to explore the older archives...like this.. That translates me into 39 years old. I got into them at the early age. Yep, I love RUSH, and this tour will be my 24th and 25th RUSH concert.
@LS2Goat500 it dosent matter what age you are your first concert can be rush im 14 and my first concert is going to be rush when they come here alot of people my age listen to that crappy new pop music i cant imagine if they tried to write a song like this they couldent they could write down 20 lyrics and repeat them for 4 min and add some auto tune and computer music no talent it is damn hard to write a song like this . HOLD THE RED STAR HIGH IN HAND
@zackjp yup i agree... Im 14 and noone I know my age really likes this type of music or really has any idea of what music is besides the people in my band. Im going to see Rush on september 3rd and I cant wait. It should be a great concert.
@zackjp your a fucking retard.... ive been listening to rush longer than you have, im 16... to say all pop music sucks is ignorant and stupid... alot DO write there own lyrics.. kesha wasnt some bitch who was put into it.. she was actually discovered.. and not all auto tune is bad... its meant as an effect,,, not because people suck at singing.. they do it on purpose.. yes this song is harder to write technically but dont bash another type of music.. its wrong.. do you even know music theory?
@apassageto2112 good point bro. i love Rush. i also like many other styles of music which makes me love Rush more. some music is hard to enjoy for some people. forgive them. i still get chills at 6:37-6:38.
@apassageto2112 both you and zackjp are technically right. Rush writes songs that were not intended for the average pop listener and not all pop music is bad. The beatles are the biggest pop band in the world and I would bet that Rush and their predecesors wouldn't be here unless for them. As far as autotune goes it is an effect, BUT it was originally intended to fix bad singers. TPAIN used it as an effect but AUTOTUNE's ORIGINAL PURPOSE IS TO FIX BAD SINGERS and not have it be noticeable.
@zackjp you said it man i am 15 and i am tryin to learn some stuff on drums because i idolize neil you should check out my vids and subscribe plzzz anyone here
@zackjp Right on man! same here, I'm 21 and have been preaching this for years. Keep up the resistance. Someday music will work its way back to a timeless art form and away from all this mass produced flavor of the day crap.
Hell, Rush had a hard time doing this album! They almost gave up! But they are Rush after all, so of course they made a masterpiece after all! And yes, most musicians [used loosely] today kinda...well, they kinda suck! No one touched Rush when I was your age...no one does 30 years later! Good taste in music, what good ears you have! And also: thanks for the upload Bryce, vinyl rules!
@zackjp I know I dont like being corrected, and I want to start by saying, I am 47, RUSHFREAK since DAY 1... I agree with everything you say, commend you, and respect the fact that you are 14 and your WAY AHEAD of your time, I wish more of your GEN. were all over it ,...like you!!
Now Im a Vocalist and Neil would also want you to know, that PROUDLY is the key word also,
so my young RUSHNUT... you keep on "HOLD THE RED STAR PROUDLY HIGH IN HAND"
I am in agreement with a lot of comments on here. This album evokes so many powerful memories of when I was a kid. Maybe because it based around such a mythic tale that it can create those timeless feelings. I have to say hemispheres was such an anomally during that time. I listened to this album atleast once a week for twenty some odd years. How many peices of music can you say that about today.
@vladimir88x7 My turntable is a Pioneer Pl-520 with an 80$ audio technica stylus and cart. ( I dont know the Cart Model, but the specs were very good for the price)
rush at thier best. still conceptual. great guitar . complimentary keys but not overpowering. geddys voice still wonderfully screechy but mellowing nicely. neils drumming incredible. songwriting with ebbs and flows and conflict and triumph, like a great book. if this doesnt touch your heart, you are dead, my friend.
i agree one of my favorite rush songs, i srsly love all of rushs concept albums there amazings storys neil pert is such a good lyric writer, 2112, hemispheres etc etc, and there alll AMAZING muisicans
vinyl clickings are so nostalgic. great stuff!

But mainly Rush!

How many peices of music can you say that about today.

rush at thier best. still conceptual. great guitar . complimentary keys but not overpowering. geddys voice still wonderfully screechy but mellowing nicely. neils drumming incredible. songwriting with ebbs and flows and conflict and triumph, like a great book. if this doesnt touch your heart, you are dead, my friend.
