  • This story reflected the great depression in 1920's. .The Great Depression began with the Wall Street Crash of October, 1929 and rapidly spread worldwide. The market crash marked the beginning of a decade of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, plunging farm incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth and personal advancement.

  • @pokkrongsoon It's also just a great film. We all know the history, but the story owes nothing to it.

  • I like what he did to his eyes. This man is truly remarkable. One of a kind. A legend. He will go down in history as one of, if not, THE greatest movie maker/actor/director EVER! <3 you, Charlie :)

  • Does this make anyone else cry? Not because it's sad or with laughter, it's just that Charlie's performance is so magical. They truly do not make them like this anymore. So beautifully made. Utter genius.

  • in those days shoes were made from real leather not artificial materials like today...so theoretically you could eat them...

  • Little known fact: My grandfather made this shoe out of licorice for this movie!

He was the president of the American Licorice Company, the makers of Snaps, Red Vines and Sour Punch, to name a few. According to him, Mr. Chaplin hated licorice!

  • @JazzMaster606 common knowledge, he had to eat a few boots before the scene was ok...

  • Eating a shoe and making appetizing to the audience : TALENT

  • @gothichyppie Actually, considering leather is just really tough cow hide, it would probably taste like really hard beef.

  • Yea man that was the greatest of the 20th century for sure, ooooooooook..............

  • I sing about Chaplin and the Gold Rush in The Celebrity Song.

  • The shoe was actually made out of black licorice, and Chaplin insisted on finishing the scene before being sent to the hospital to get his stomach pumped. Now that is dedication that actors are missing nowadays!

  • @QuantumFart2 Hey, what was the candle made out of, that he ate? Do you remember that part?

  • @thibiggestcow Yeah, I think it was a real candle, made out of whale blubber, which is essentially fat, so, you really could eat one of those if you had to. But I'm not entirely sure.

  • though he is eating a shoe the way he is eating it looks so tasty lool;D he is so talented
