Truth is that we do unfortunately need elephant culls because we have cut up their habitat into little, isolated and unsustainable islands, which do not allow for the animals to migrate and the land and vegetation to recover from grazing and browsing. So the culling is necessary to prevent overgrazing but that doesn't make this blood sport right. Humans are the reason for the imbalance, we are the problem animals. We need to be culled. Let's start with the hunters.

Anybody who gets sad when they see an elephant being shot and quickly killed by a human hunter - needs to get perspective. Just search Youtube for "lions killing elephant". For those who don't, just imagine ten lions jumping on top of a fully grown elephant, at night, and forcing the elephant onto it's side. Then the lions proceed to start eating. Why not transmigrate surplus animals to other parks (for money) instead of killing them? What gets me are the smiles and posing for photos afterwards next to the animal, which tells me this isn't culling, it's hunting for "sport". It's only money they are interested in. Even rare rhinos are hunted as well. How can that be justified?
Rare rhinos continue to exist until today because trophy hunters are paying game ranchers to have them around. The country with the highest number of rhinos in the world is South Africa, and after national parks game ranches are where you are most likely to find these rare creatures there. It's really no different than ranching beef cattle.

What you probably dont understand about this situation is that even though these are legally sanctioned hunts by the government, these hunts are still sold for tens of thousands of dollars to paying hunters. Hunters pay and do these hunts because it is important to the preservation of the species. Under no circumstances are these paying hunters allowed to remove any part of these animals as a trophy, be it tusks, or a skull. A picture and a memory is all they get for 20G's.

Take for example Hwange National Park with an area of 14000km2, during the dry season can only really support 1 elephant per km2 of land but the elephant population is more than double that resulting in mass deforestation.

The problem with castrating is that you are distupting natural selection. If you want strong healthy herds in the future then you must let the strong bulls grow and succeed and let the weak be selected out. Castraing disrupts that, by adding a random selection pressure.

These hunts are the only support that protects Africa's big game. In the northern part of Africa hunting was banned in the 60s. The southern part allowed hunters to manage the herds. It's supports protection of the game. The hunting permits pay for schools and hospitals as well. 100% of the animals are consumed by the local villages. Anybody who gets sad when they see an elephant being shot and quickly killed by a human hunter - needs to get perspective. Just search Youtube for "lions killing elephant". For those who don't, just imagine ten lions jumping on top of a fully grown elephant, at night, and forcing the elephant onto it's side. Then the lions proceed to start eating. Of course, the elephant is still alive and dies like an hour later of blood loss and/or shock. It makes humans look very kind indeed.

Where she is then shot not once, but twice before she goes down. Elephants aren't deer or hog, they're extremely intelligent animals with tight-knit family groups and social structures.

These people seem to justify what they do by saying "...the meat is used to feed poor families..." and similar bullshit. Why not transmigrate surplus animals to other parks (for money) instead of killing them? What gets me are the smiles and posing for photos afterwards next to the animal, which tells me this isn't culling, it's hunting for "sport". It's only money they are interested in. Even rare rhinos are hunted as well. How can that be justified?

Rare rhinos continue to exist until today because trophy hunters are paying game ranchers to have them around. The country with the highest number of rhinos in the world is South Africa, and after national parks game ranches are where you are most likely to find these rare creatures there. It's really no different than ranching beef cattle.
You're absolutely right that it's all about money. Any conservation effort will fail if it's not generating money.

What you probably dont understand about this situation is that even though these are legally sanctioned hunts by the government, these hunts are still sold for tens of thousands of dollars to paying hunters. Hunters pay and do these hunts because it is important to the preservation of the species. Under no circumstances are these paying hunters allowed to remove any part of these animals as a trophy, be it tusks, or a skull. A picture and a memory is all they get for 20G's.

Hmm, not the brightest choice as far as culling goes. They just took out a matriarch. Usually the matriarch stands in the front and protects the herd if threatened, she is also the one that knows all the routes for food/water. Really, it's BS that it's needed for management.

In the south hunting was ban in the late 60s by environmentalist who said they would support the animals,most animals there are endangered at best. The south has allowed hunters to set-up a management program that has worked better than anyone ever thought possible. It's all supported by fees from hunting.

Birth control for elephants is not practical.The real world isn't a disney movie. These animals need to be controlled. There is nothing wrong with humans harvesting animals and that includes elephants. We all love animals but even if the bunny huggers were willing to put their money where there mouths' are and supply the huge ammounts of money needed to relocate elephant to different areas - the logistics are difficult and often relocated herds struggle. Yes, Elephant culling is necessary in many areas of Southern Africa where the vegetation simply cannot support the large herd numbers and whenever possible should include the whole herd as any animals that are not culled would very stressed out without the family unit. Take for example Hwange National Park with an area of 14000km2, during the dry season can only really support 1 elephant per km2 of land but the elephant population is more than double that resulting in mass deforestation.

The only thing is disagree about in this video is the culling of only a few animals in a herd. If animals are left then the social group is disrupted causing stress for the surviving elphants. As silly as it sounds all animals must be killed in the herd as to not cause stress for surviving individuals.

Probably not pns, because even an animal away from the herd still has it's place within the structure of the herd family. I mean that is what it comes down to is the stresses induced by culling one or two from a herd influence the entire family structure. I will say though most of that is based on expert "speculation" of elephant herd behavior, there has to my knowledge been no scientific study of elephant culling done that really proves this, or the reverse.

The rangers who cull these animals dont enjoy it, but they understand the importance of culling to maintain healthy populations of elephants in the future.

Sorry boxofscorpions, but I personally know rangers who cull animals and they enjoy it, they get a thrill from it, in fact, they live for it and can't wait (and sometimes don't wait) for culling season to start. A much better solution would be to simply castrate the majority of young elephant bulls in the area, leaving only a few potential alpha-males. The question is, why is this solution overlooked; the answer simple, hunters love hunting and will oppose it as long as they can find some excuse

The problem with castrating is that you are distupting natural selection. If you want strong healthy herds in the future then you must let the strong bulls grow and succeed and let the weak be selected out. Castraing disrupts that, by adding a random selection pressure.

These hunts are the only support that protects Africa's big game. In the northern part of Africa hunting was banned in the 60s. The southern part allowed hunters to manage the herds. It's supports protection of the game. The hunting permits pay for schools and hospitals as well. 100% of the animals are consumed by the local villages. Birth control and anti-hunters destroyed the animal in the north where most species are endangered at best. Hunter alone stopped the ivory trade.

Oddly enough the only country that has a real problem with it's elephant herd dwindling is Kenya-which banned all sport hunting of ele over 30 yrs ago and has seen it's herd drop nearly 70% since.

That was NOT culling. For culling to be carried out efficiently and humanely, the whole herd needs to be cropped. This leaves no elephants with the trauma of the slaughter they have just experienced. Very sad to see the matriach immediately try and pick up the first elephant shot. Very disturbing and unprofessional video. I still fail to see where the pleasure comes from this activity. And NO, I'm NOT an all-out anti.
