  • poor locke, got took for a ride his whole life, even until the bitter end.. used and spat out by the island.. such is life, beautiful and tragic

  • and what about the secret he was going to tell Walt in the 1st season right after telling Walt that backgammon was the oldest game in the world.. 2 sides one light and one dark.. What was that secret? we were never made privy to that either

  • @darrelincanada I didnt read what the rest of what you wrote but his secret was that he was in a wheelchair before the crash

  • @Rude666 uyes i am sure that was the big secret.. but then Locke had a lot of secrets including the fact he may or may not have been smoky all along

  • @Rude666 maybe you shoud read everythingelse i posted

  • Or John locke was really a manifestion of another sort where in he was both jacob and smokey. Remember claires dream about the bloody and empty crib? and encountereing a John locke with one white eye ( jacob) and one black eye(smoky) in that dream? Before everyone strats criticizing this line of logic. i ask you to keep an open mind and know that every thing i posit here is mere conjecture.. but it does seem to make sense in a very strange and peculiar way.

  • Then just as quickly and mysteriously vanished right before them? I posit that it was really smoky that was on the beach with kate sayid charlie and sawyer when jack went went chasing his dad (smoky). So how do i rconcile this scene discrepancy with my hypothesis? where it clearly john encountering smoky? It is either a red herring designed by the writers to mislead us.

  • It was standard for Kate Sayid charlie and sawyer to go traipsing off on various missions in the 1st season. yet theyare all conspicously missing and only lacke is there where moments before jacks dad christain stood. Remember that whenever any of the others mysteerously appeared it was preceded by the clickling noise associated with the smoke monster most of the time ( remember goodwyns wife harper when she appeared before Juliet and then jack ?

  • Yet how is it that It is locke pulling Jack back up from the cliff only a few minutes later where Christain was not too far way. How did locke go from the beach to a place in the jungle wherejack was. even with his superior tracking skills he would have had to read jacks trail . And where was kate... she who just had to go along on every search and rescue back then or even sayid where was he?

  • Locke Says he had a pretty good idea where jack could be ( remember John is on the beach at this point). At the very same time or apparently the same time we cut to jack charging at his dad who disappears and jack tubbles down an embankment and over a cliff. bit has enough wits to grab a vine. Now given that john locke is on a beach about to go find jack 9 which would take at least 20 minutes.

  • In Lockes encounter with that that point unknown entity I think we can safely say that locke doesn't see the eye/heart in the unknown entities flashes. Also we know that jack has seen his dad (who is incidently dead and we know that smoky can only imitate those already dead). There is a scene where jack has gone off chasing his dad ( really smoky at this point) through the jungle. cut back to kate sayid ancharlie and locke on the beach and they ask locke where jack might have gone to

  • mad mom wanted bib to take her place ( mad mom can turn to smoke too interesting). Yet it is jacob who assumes the mantle of island protector after throwing mib down into the eye/heart of the island. Now mib is the smoke monster , Smoky/mib is aware of the islands heart/eye. buit is unable to get back to it because jacob blocks him from getting there. Also we later discover that smoky/mib is able to access each losties memories ( remember ekos encounter?)

  • yet Locke has seen the eye of the island. We aren't made privy until season 6's across the sea that thonly jacob the boy in black and the original crazy mom know about the eye/heart of the island. Now given that no one even knows that it even exists beyond the bamboo forest that jack originally wakes up in in the series opening scene from the pilot and that only thjack bib and mad mom know about how is it that John locke can even say that he saw it

  • I have to admit that my thypothesis of locke being the smoke monster all along falls apart in this scene. My Hypothesis had some very convincing evidence. right from the 1st couple of episodes Locke seemed to posses knowledge that he shouldn't have been privy to. . Let me elaborate. Locke says he has seen the eye of the island. Yet no one in the 1st season even is aware that the island is unique. they think its just an uncharted island

  • The smoke monster was probably surveying him as a host body for Seasons 5 and 6

  • locke said omg no JUSTIN BIEBER RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN

  • huge plothole. Obviously tptb didnt know what to do here and thought it would be interesting to make locke see something beautiful. In reality after season 6 it makes no sense seeing as how even when smokey did scan someone it was a bunch of periodic flashes of light, not one bright light.

    Huge and unforgivable continuity error

  • @DillonB1234 Smokey showed him the eye of the island.

In season 3 Locke says to Eko "he saw a very bright light it was beautiful"

    bu bu plot hole

  • @Rude666 im aware he saw a bright light but the smoke monster is not a beautiful bright "eye of the island". It could've been connected to the heart of the island somehow seeing as the heart was a "beautiful bright light". But tptb didn't connect it to that so now this scene makes no sense.

  • @Rude666 the bright light was from that tank thing remember? or then again after being pushed out a window stories high i bet he saw bright lights.. lol

  • Now the writers'll say this is when the Man in Black scanned Locke and formulated the plan to leave the island. Somehow that knowledge doesn't ruin smokey for me. Still badass and creepy.

  • what da hell is it wid smoke it shuld a been a dinosaur or a real monster

  • Locke is the best

  • I think that was Jacob. Locke rather called it a white light, while the MiB always appeared as a black smoke.

  • mabye im just guessing but mabye the flash of light are showing that the monster has some good in him and is trying to escape its unholy vessel

  • My theory is, it wasn't The Monster of The Man in Black that Locke saw. It was Jacob.

Like if the monster's true form was a pillar of black smoke and Jacob's was a bright light, which is what Locke told Eko he saw.

Think about it, everyone else saw The Monster as black smoke and when Locke finally did he was frightened and confused. And Locke was a front running candidate so maybe it was Jacob reaching out to him.

  • locke is darth vader....he is seen at first to be the savior...then he is dead and you think he is meant for nothing ( changing )...then he comes back.

  • I agree. Something like a Christ figure. One who was sacrificed to make a difference, but would rise again later to settle things.

  • But The Man in Black was manipulating Locke into thinking he was special as part of his plan to find a 'loophole', so that's probably why he appeared to him as a bright light.

Would be cool if Jacob could appear as a bright light though.

  • dude he must of shit his pants while looking at the smoke o.o gotta love Lost

  • it is vincent

  • the first time i saw this scene i though it was a dinosaur

  • @sushiboi66 The island does have an exotic prehistoric-jungle setting which would be an ideal-home for a dinosaur

  • @sushiboi66 Me and my family even called him a "dino" =)

  • he saw a bright light! not the monster. or the black smoke form

  • @klaybush

No, I'm pretty sure he saw The Monster. It makes the same sounds, and when it was dragging Locke away in the first Season finale he wanted to see where it took him.

There's a sort of function in The Monster that flashes a 'bright light' on the person that is revealed in the episode Left Behind, and this is meant to explain what Locke was talking about.

In essence, it's the producers trying to throw us off into thinking there is another creature when there isn't.

  • @klaybush the monster can make sudden flashes of bright lights like on season 3 when kate and juliet are handcuffed together

  • Yeah, a cloud of dark smoke is ingenious.

I'd hate the show if it was a dinosaur or any other living/extinct animal.

  • I think this scene will show up again in S6, from Smokie's perspective. There would be a smokie centric episode, much like the jacob centric episode, and it will show smokie's influences in the story

  • @holdemehha unfortunately there isn't one in production at all or even one being planned.

  • @holdemehha No that'd be stupid. We've already seen from its perspective a few times but to defeat the object of it as a spectacle you would have us be through its eyes all the way from S1? No stupid you are sir.

  • @holdemehha Hah, it didn't! Season 6 has been very bland and aimless, and while I'm still hopeful the finale will make some sense.

  • @holdemehha indeed it will. It started to make sense to me after I found out who the smoke monster was and what was it doing on the island

  • when i knew locke was going to see it i was ready but when i saw it it was dissapionting i was sad:(

  • I know what the monster is.......its samwell

  • its based on the bubble from the prisoner that beats him up whenever he does something bad

  • I think the black smoke was a dharma experiment that work together with the orchid because it has the power to get your thoughts and your memories (your past) and that's something like all the Desmond time trivel and all that

  • Desmond didn't Time Travel, he succumb to the sickness.

  • It's actually a form of subconscious temporal memory link. It's an enhanced form of it. Most of the questions of this topic hasn't been answered yet for any real answer to be any more than speculation.

  • You've been watching too much forbidden planet. The smoke monster isn't the id.

  • The black smoke is *much* older than the Dharma Initiative. In this week's episode, there were hieroglyphics in the temple depciting Anubis bowing to the smoke monster.

  • I reckon smokey is Apep and the Statue is Taweret. They are both connected in Egyptian mythology.

Could be wrong tho. Knowing Lost, I almost certainly am.

One thing for sure tho is that you're right, it, whatever it is, is old... very old.

Tho, saying that, it could be from the future and sent back to ancient times, similar to the losties...

  • I think the monster is allegorical, not sure what it means yet, though(in fact,I think EVERYTHING that happens there is allegorical)

  • its based on the monster from michle crichtons novel prey

  • no it's not, damon lindelof and carlton cuse stated many times it was nothing like that

  • no its not it has nothing to do with nano bites and they said spicifaclly that it has nothing to do with it

  • i know but they used the smoke cloud thing

  • yeah your right about that, but when asked about the design and influence of the monster they denied prey saying they didnt even know what it was.

  • "why couldnt the monster be something like a big beast instead of the wierd smoke creature. "

Are you kidding? what's original about that?

A cloud of smoke is genius.

  • absolutly at first in season one i thaught "ahh dinosaur or somthing" then i seen the smoke i was like "holy crap something original just came outta tv! :O"

  • plus making a beast wouldn't be too good with special fx
