This was done at Starland Ballroom in Sayerville N.J. As far as I know there is no video of this except for what people have posted on you tube .Check out the other videos of Leslie West I have on you tube .
like the way he wears his strap. stops the neck dive I think. Im still listening to his old tunes, These are good. got to get some new albums. Wish he'd play his gibson.
@depper Are you absolutely sure this is Masters of War? I bought the song off of I Tunes and it sounds nothing like this. Lyrics sound much different too. I would really like to find THIS song. Any version will do. If it is the same song, I guess I'm full of shit. I don't think it is though.
the thing that makes a virtuoso guitarist is the ability of the listener to recognize who's playing after one or two notes. What's great about Les is that his normal tone is so distinguishable, and that the slide tone is totally unique also. No one else has ever sounded like it.
Spanky ? Uhhh listen up, friend : you and your man-crush must continue on without me. I play music for a living ......life is great . I support my family...Go enjoy your Mountain and forget I exist. BTW, your enthusiasm is creepy and latent. Bye!
Ok asswipe, I was trying to be nice... but your crush on Ricky.. err Greg Martin belongs in a thread more in tune with "almost haves" or "never-beens".
Understand, Spanky?
PS: I play guitar, and respect musicians that have an open mind and support their fam. So big ups to supportin your fam... as for your crush on Ricky Martin... thats all you bud...
The phattest slide gtr i ever heard, i met Leslie 4 times and did an interview with him for a local magazine in the 90´es. After the interview i met Ritchie and Blue Cheer in a local bar, hanging around till sunrise, great time with them! Hopefully Leslie comes to Berlin next year.
Too much gain....try the vid on yt called " Greg martin digs into his 1958 les paul" ...now THAT is TONE. DRama, suspense, clarity, great touch. This is just ok,imo. And a terrible cover of Dylan...no likey.
lil, thats your opinion. I prefer Wests tone anyday to Greg Martin. Greg was sloppy, tempo is all over the map, just doesnt flow. I know what you are trying to say... Greg played that song clean. West played this dirty. VERY VERY dirty. West has played many songs over his 40yr career clean... and even uses the acoustic on occasion. But with West's unique phrasing, all the notes seem like they BELONG together... the notes just flow together.... That's something your boy Martin has to learn.
The notes flow together because there is so much gain, too much preamp gain .I am not a champion of Greg Martin but if you cannot hear the talent displayed , and the reason the 58/59 Les Pauls are the most desired guitar on the planet, I cannot help you. I am glad you enjoy West's playing. My idea of tone is clearly different from yours, and there are dozens/hundreds of valid guitar tones so enjoy! As far as sloppy goes... Sloppy? Really ?? Hmmm, not sure about that bro....
You are comparing apples to oranges. Greg Martin is a country performer. He played some rock and some blues. The reason I had to look him up (aka he's pretty daym unknown) is because they never settled on an image. His group went nowhere. You can try to label Leslie's tone by listening to one song. But you are outnumbered, trust me. Leslie West + Les Paul Jr + Sun Amps created the BEST TONE in rock history. And he did it before Greg Martin wore diapers.
You seem like a pretty cool dude... so yer off the hook! ;) I'll take West and even Greg Norman.. err Martin over the crap that gets played on the radio nowadays
He is playing on October 21 in Starland Ballroom with Joe Satriani that should be a great show. I will be there with my son. Check it out if you can .
I will be in attendance on October 18th, at the United Palace in New York. New BUDDA amps and a new bass player, Rev Jones! This aught to be a classic show... oh yeah, Joe Satriani will be there too! :) Bring yer ass to the show!
This song is called "Gotta Serve Somebody." Written & recorded in 1979 by Bob Dylan, it was maybe Dylan's last great piece of work. Sadly by this time Dylan was pretty much a relic of the '60s and the song didnt get much play. Leslie's powerful vocals and heavy slide work just gives this song such a strong presence. I think you have to go all the way back to Sabbath's "Iron Man" to find something this heavy.
Totally agree with all. Ya know the best thing about Leslie that becomes obvious from hearing the 1st note live, is that you are watching/listening to a national treasure. Leslie West never sold out. He STILL plays the same rock we grew up on. And still plays it better than the new blood... with more passion.
If he does and you can get to see him ,you won't be disappointed !! My son and I have seen him twice now and I saw him back in the 70's and he sounds better then ever.
I have seen him countless times since the mid 80's... and seeing him now seems extra special because he is using a mixed bag of older guitars which helped him gain his fame, including some Les Paul Jrs. 40+ years later and tone seems to keep getting better... Totally unreachable. Best of the best.
Oh no worries gldead3741, Ive seen him dozens of times... decade after decade. You are right, Leslie is an artist. Each show is a new experience. Never plays the same song twice the same way... every song sounds entirely different every time. That tone and vibrato has to be heard live to be believed... its BEST in CLASS.
That's truely right and I will keep on seeing him as long as he comes around. Unfortunately last night I was on my computer and found that all the audio for for my videos are now gone. It seems that I when I downloaded real players free trail for Mac it converted all my stuff to real player and now that it's gone there gone as well and I am unable to get the audio back. At least I have You Tube !

@depper The version of Masters of War that I bought featured Ozzy Osbourne singing as well as Leslie. Am I way off base?

@SWLABRETW You are right! This was Leslie simply working that guitar magic live in concert.
