My cat used to do this when we had baby rabbits. We thought she was trying to kill them at first, but she would chase and catch them, then pretend bite and then groom them. She did the exact same thing with her kittens when they were born.
I think you are mistaking the lip smacking for bathing. Moon Ami Likes to mother by bathing. She does the same with her new baby sister Muddypie.
