  • hey the pack ring in this video is smaller than the one on the website. what is the material it is made of? if anyone can help thanks

  • This is like the Swiss gel stove

  • DAVE PLEASE HELP!!! I have been looking for a smaller nesting cup for the 27oz Klean Kanteen bottle like you have here. However each time I purchase a stainless steel/titanium nesting cup at $35 a pop sometimes, they always fit the 32oz nalgene size. It is getting expensive paying for these items to have to turn around and pay for shipping to send them back! There have been other posts asking the same thing on this video..... Please help a couple of your loyal subscribers out.

  • @badjujuR6 it is the snow peak 450 sw fh

  • @badjujuR6 A Snow Peak Ti-Single 300 Cup FH Should work. Your Klean Kanteen is 2.75" in diameter and the cup is 2.95" in diameter.

  • Hey Dave, I was just making a couple common man's pack stoves (using paper clip cups from the dollar store (must remove the bottom and rim from top) and I thought of a good idea. If you overlap 2 pack stove rings one inside of another, 1 slightly smaller than the other so it fits inside with tension; you can rotate them to adjust the venting holes. If it's windy you can close the holes slightly, or if the flame needs more air you can open the holes a bit.

  • ...this will help focus the flame's heat and conserve fuel. Having the extra pack stove ring takes up no extra space or weight. And as you say; 2 is 1, 1 is none

  • Dave what is the size of the cup on your water bottle?

  • more than likely it doesn't come with the canteen and cup seeing how that looks like a $25 canteen bottle and a $35 titanium cup

  • @Pohaku66 So then what is it? Just the ring and a canister of fuel? Sounds about right considering the ring itself sells on the site for 7.00.

  • @michaeloffgrid that's my guess

  • Anyone know the dimensions on this thing and what it's made of? It looks like a couple of inches tall but I'm not sure how big Dave's hand is. Thanks!

  • to dave or whoever else may know, is the pack stove including the canteen and cup? or is it just the ring and candle theng? i would like to know soon for i am plaing to get some stuff off of dave's site and dont want to spend money on a cook kit i dont have the canteen for, so whoever knows pleas speack up and tell me. (ps. i would like to see more vids on cooking with the small canteen cups at some point)

  • @porygon110 Did you ever get an answer? I'm wondering the same thing.

  • @michaeloffgrid no answer yet, but i am bigenign to think it wouldent hurt ot just get a canteen kit liek this oof ther sit and the stove, then if the stove has 1 with it i will have 2 canteen sets and probly would gift 1, but thats my idea

  • Dave I'm former USMC recon/sniper I like the stove but you should inform everyone on how it operates in extreme cold. I would like to know, I found that the jell fuel does not burn is this true with this fuel. Not knocking the product. Semper Fi I like what you do. Need any instructors? "JUSTEARNIE"

  • So its actually just as easy to get your self a can with a lid and fill it ethanol and get some kind of punctured metal ring to raise the cup from the fire?

  • I think when you run out of fuel you could use rubbing alcohol or even hand sanitizer. I used a method similer to this with great results, I had the simplist stove in camp, but also one of the fastest.

  • Just bought the stove on your site....I see you take Paypal...very convenient. Great products. (that could be trouble) lol. Love the videos Dave. Thank you very much for all you are doing here.

    Roy

  • What type of haversack does Dave have in this video? Is that the same one on sale on the website?

  • Just got the stove today, works great circled up on top of a trangia with the gsi nesting cup/pot. Sorry about last post, hit wrong button

  • Just bot the stov

  • Hi

what size Klean kanteen is this ?

    18 Oz ?

  • on your web site there is a typo error on this item

    you put "stovw"

  • After 30min still could not get a rolling boil. I don't think the Sterno has enough umph... I do like the metal stove part of it though :-)

  • @peteypab81 You need a wind screen any small cooking stove benefits from less wind.

  • Just tried out the new stove system. It took about 8 minutes without a top on my cup to make hot coffee. The fuel container and stove piece cooled down very quickly which alleviated my main concern about the system. Also, the fuel container says that it will burn for two hours so you get a lot from a little light weight container.

  • Crap out of stock! When will it be in stock

  • @Red69Bu11 They are back in stock now. Just got mine in the mail today.

  • Wish I knew about this before I spent so much of the Vargo Titanium Triad XE dual-fuel stove. This would be so much faster and easier than using alcohol. I think I will buy a few for my kids and myself while hunting.

  • Dave, are you prepping for an appearance as Santa ? The beard is looking pretty authentic.

On the video topic... I've been keeping a very similar set up in my truck kit for years! When I'm broken down and it's cold out and am many hours from help or self repair.. a warm cup of coffee or instant chicken soup is really nice to have and super easy to prepare with that kind of set up.

  • With ya Dave. Campfires are as old as fire itself, we need them I think more than we know. I really like this basic stove. A great little hunting stove. You should be proud of it. Thanks to all concerned in bringing to us.

  • After its out of fuel you can just carry a small bottle of alcohol and refill it.

  • I'm curious how you avoid deer ticks and other bad bugs..

  • Just from a observation point of view. Right there you have a flat solid base. However many areas dont have a good flat spot to set that up. I'm thinking with how narrow that base is, it could easily tip over. How about incorperating a snap on type base for the sterno can.

  • @themighty9mm

You could easily modify it by soldering on some support if you like.

  • @themighty9mm - get your camp axe and/or knife out, and make your own flat base to stand it up. Why does Dave need to hold your hand?

  • @steve51704000 Whoa, jackass. It was a very simple suggestion. A simple potential product improvement. Think about it, part of the idea of the product is for a quick stop and heat. A low effort warm food/drink. Chopping a flat spot ups the effort and calorie burn. Calories, that could be used elswhere. Was just a suggestion

  • Got that right regarding stove Mfgs. Cool ministove!

  • Hi Dave, I was just wondering what nesting cup you use for your kleen kanteen? I can't find any locally for mine. It'd save me buying some wrong ones online if I knew.

  • @noodlesamurai The pathfinder school website has a kleen canteen for sale on there. I assume it's the same one that he uses in these videos. There's cups and things on there too. From personal experience I've bought a few things and the service is good and shipping is quick.

  • I have a Optimus camp stove because I live in the desert. Not a lot of material to make fire with and if you do you can be seen for miles away. The police love to write you up also. I really can't wait to move.

  • Try the time-proven German army stove. It folds up, throw a tablet of Trioxane on it and you'll have your hot beverage in about 2 minutes. You can run it on Esbit, too, but Trioxane does the job a lot quicker.

  • You can reuse the can when it burns dry. Use perlite or a coarse sand as a wick and some denatured alcohol (I've even used 91% rubbing alcohol) NEVER USE GASOLINE or the like. -rob

  • You should try making one of the classic penny stoves.

  • That looks just like a Sterno Stove I used as a kid 50 years ago.

  • Why are you removing the tattoos on your hands....

  • @DjUndying1 What are you on about friend, I am not removing anything the Sun is? These tats are about 25 years old or more?????

  • @wildernessoutfitters hello sir, great job you do over there!!! please how can i learn ABC on selfreliance techniques please??? I'm from europe btw...(from an outdoor 'freak'....at leats that what others way) I would love to give something valuable to my kid.... something honest & real to teach......thanx!

  • @wildernessoutfitters it just looks like they are gone at first glance a lot of sunlight is hitting them...

  • neet bit of light kit to.add to water and cup that you would carry anyway great for coffee on the trail, hi from the uk Dave and merry christmas to you Iris and all at the Pathfinder school.

  • Add a wind screen and cover your cup and you'll save fuel and a few minutes of time.

  • @cyclist01222 cheap wind screens and/or pot cozy's can be cut out of a windshield sun reflector. -rob

  • 1:28-1:41 true. That means you Tinny.

  • I think it's BS as well that people can't make fires in the woods in public lands, not even with dead wood. Unfortunately idiots who don't understand fire and how to use it properly ruin it for the rest of us. Here in Texas we have fire bans all over, even when it's been raining all week.

  • Lovin the common man type gear Dave. Hows livin in the yurt goin? Thanks for the advice on wool blankets the other day. Huge fan brother, I appreciate it.

  • Using a knife to pry open a can should be a crime. Made me cringe. haha

  • And do you just blow it out?

  • Hey dave! Are those stoves multi use? Can you re-use them?

  • Thats a nice little stove but. Stoves that cant really burn anything else than alcohol based fuels and not small twigs or something like that at all thats not really very handy then. That would work ok with alcohol still if youd put few holes to the perforated mesh there. So it could stand on top of burning little sticks also without the alcohol can when needed. Hope this makes sense :)

    Take care: Ari

Ps: i know it would make cost of make a bit more but not much ;)

  • When I was in the U S Navy I would take my E-Tool dig a small hole and use a heat tab to heat water or even warm my food. They work great and ate small...

  • Dave, I've seen areas where idiots whack down all the saplings instead of seeking out deadfall and preping a good supply of dry wood well before night falls. To your credit, I dont think promoting stoves and "leave no trace" will stop the idiots though and the campfire is one of the best parts of the experience.

  • I think you are right about fires being prohibited in some areas, I think it's a bunch of crap. There are however some irresponsible people who don't know proper fire making/caring skills, they are the reason those are in place... I use fires and backpacking stoves when camping, but still prefer stoves because they are more efficient in my opinion.

  • Nice product, Take care and have a good one.

  • Dave,

Great vid as usual. Quick question. Once the Sterno is burnt off, is there any way of making or "reloading" the canister using natural materials, or carry some petroleum jelly and extra cotton/linen in a long term situation?

    Regards,

    North

  • I just use walmart camping candles in us canteen cup.

  • I've been using hobostoves for such a need. I generally use the classic soup can, but I may start bringing an alcohol fueled stove made of beer cans. The former may be time consuming, but gets the job done and it's light weight and easily made in the wilderness, since soup cans can be found in any environment these days. However, the latter is fast and cheap.

I'm not trying to take away business or knock a fellow Tennessean's ideas, just throwing what I do out there.

  • good point dave ..a quite ..stealthy way to hydrate and up the core temp on a cold day....i have tried those backpacking stoves..too much fuel..smells ..noise and hasle for a 10 min break..this is a much better idea..

  • how do you drink from it, my canteen cut always gets hot as hell, i end up burning my lips on it

  • I always have a penny stove with me.I use 91% rubbing alcohol and find no problem since i have a cap for no leaking and my pots don't get a nasty black film on them if i use it the right way.

  • My friend sent me one of these that he made. Was gonna show but it won't let me post the link to it showing how to make one. I have yet to use it but it's in my pack inside the thing I will use to cook my foods for the most part. I haven't seen these gel fire things though.

  • I've killed a few deer with a bow, sitting on the ground, with my homemade alcohol stove burning or having just finished brewing coffee. Gel or regular alc. stoves are awesome for the hunter. Denatured alcohol in a homemade stove is considerably cheaper than gel, BUT, both are excellent ways of getting a hot drink while maintaining scent discipline. I wondered when you were warm up to this concept!!!

  • Is there any chance you could weigh this and let us know what it comes out to? Looks like a great piece of gear for the price.

    Happy holidays everyone. :)

  • what you were saying about how people are starting to use "fake fire" if you will, me and some of my family would go hiking in the woods for a few days and my dad was all convinced that the little stove would do better than a fire would and i almost died laughing.

fire like you said is the best way to do it. and always will be.. at least for me it is.

  • I tested heat it took 15 min to boil...... There is a review on the web showing the time to boil.... That said i like improvised, re-purposed equipment.

  • I just started using the sterno stove with a bean can for a heater and cooker when hunting. The gel can be spooned out and used as a fire starter. I think these will light with a metal match. I have found some comercial sterno types and they have two lids two difrent sizes. The smaller one will burn for 8 hours and the larger one for 4. Great multi use item to have especially for heating water not to great for boiling.

  • i use a tin can hobo stove generally, so no scorch marks and legal even where camp fires are not.

  • where i live it is legal almost everywhere but in the main city to have a fire. they are big on the natural ways up here. luck us.

now how does the gel do in extreem cold like in northern u.p. michigan. it can get to neg 20F and colder here.

  • I agree about camp fires, I love them, but fires are prohibited in some areas. A camp stove would be the perfect thing to have if you hunt or camp on state or federal property where fires are prohibited except in the provided fire rings. This one is small, light, and inexpensive, that's the way to go.

  • man i wish i had a job so i could buy all this stuff it looks awesome but i had to move back with the parents and crap

  • I have a sterno emergency stove that is basically the same concept. The Wik stove ring and the cook and heat stove are all variations of the " plumbers stove" from the 30's and 40's. It can be made easily from a small paint can with a resalable lid. Just stuff the empty can with cotton balls and saturate with denatured alcohol. Cut a piece of tin to hold the cup and you are set. Great for when your in a deer stand.

  • This is solution for people who go camping above the tree line where there is no firewood to use. You don't want to build a fire way up there anyway. A wood fire would would leave a black ugly scar on the granite.

  • I like my Nimblewill Nomad stove.

  • I just use Sterno fuel and my canteen cup stove I got from Rob at the spring gathering great on the go kit

  • I meant my Traingia burners.

  • I would like to find that screen stand for my Training burners.

  • I carry a Vargo Titanium alcohol stove for that very purpose. This looks to be a bit better of an option. Good stuff as always!

  • Quick Down and Dirty? Ask me, I think its super efficient!

  • Nice kit!

  • I agree about camp fires. People who tell me I can't start a fire are telling me I can't be part of my world. I take a very dim view of that kind of thinking. I'd really rather people like that didn't breed and just go quietly extinct like the dumb ass bird or whatever.

  • I like this thing. I mean those fuel stoves that are a few oz & boil water in a couple minutes are great, but you also have to carry bottles of fuel & they cost $40 to $120 bucks for one that actually works & the fuel is expensive & can be hazardous in heat or punctured. This is $8, small, cheap fuel, about zero weight. It's just better because it's smarter. I can wait a couple more minutes for hot water. The fuel is good accelerant to start fires in less than ideal situations too.

  • The market is glutted with cheap stoves made overseas, that you can even buy from wal-mart, at 10 times what the stove stove is actually worth. I mean you can walk into a sporting goods section of wallmart and fin a crappy chicom piece of garbage thats not even worth anywhere near the purchase price. At least with daves Sterno stove You know its american made, you know where your money is going. It's Capitalism at its purest form.

  • is this for the regular size sterno or min-sterno?

  • i think that the canteen cup with the stove stand is a better idea, you can carry a small altoids tin with you if you want to use it with gel fuels, or you can use small sticks, i bought one years ago from you dave based on its versitility, i think this has its uses but is limited ,

id stick with the canteen cup

  • What a great idea. My dad carries an old soup can (hobo stove) and drops one of the fuel cans in. Cheaper Than Dirt sells the fuel at a far price.

  • How cool is that? Simple wins every time.

  • Stolen idea from the Swiss army emergency stove..... Somebody is falling in the selling a stove pitfall... sorry Dave..... idea is good but definitely not new and definitely too pricey...

  • @dutchunlimited1 you are right, the same type of stove already exists. But the thing that makes Dave's product vids worth watching is that they are simple enough you could make them yourself from watching his videos. You could easily go find some metal mesh and bend it around the fuel canister yourself and spend pretty much nothing. But, if someone doesn't think they can do that themselves, or they want to support Dave because they enjoy the knowledge that they share, they can spend the money.

  • @dutchunlimited1 A lot of the stuff they sell on the Pathfinder site is easy to make and Dave always encourages that for his common man ideals. But when you buy something from then at least you know your money is going to a good group and not big market fat cats.

  • hey dave a piece of restaurant quality aluminum foil [heavy duty commercial grade] used as a lid would shorten the boiling time, save fuel, and wont weight anything...could also cut-out a small lid from a pie tin or turkey pan

  • bushbuddy.ca

  • I'll stick with the army verion of this that I've been using for years.

Compact mini swedish army gel cooker, the same thing, just better built. And costs about what you are selling it for.

The stand looks better on the army one, It's a screw top too which I find better for capping out the flame once it gets really hot.

I've had a couple for a good few years I just fill with green heat and I can cook or boil with it over and over again.

  • @1981Amon Actually it's not swedish. IT is swiss army cooker. Switzerland.

  • I like this, even more compact than my magic heat stove and i love the price too

  • I bent an oval used can to make a stove to fit my army canteen cup. I nest in that my beer can alcohol stove, some fire starters, ramen noodles, coffee or hot chocolate foil for wind screen. It works with the small flask of Everclear (fuel, drink, or disinfect) or small hand full of twigs to boil the water in 6-9 minutes. I have to make sure the water out of the creek is disinfected with everclear....:) It all fits in the alice outside pouch and is contained in a small Crown Royal bag.

  • I like that music the best. Whenever my son hears it playing on my laptop, he sits on the arm of my chair saying "Dave's got another video" and we watch.

    Good little device Dave.

  • In this namby pamby, baby sitting society of ours where fire is akin to terrorism, we have just about lost the right to have fire! Recently, while in the Smokey Mountain, at a picnic areaI, I started a small WOOD fire in the in one of the suppled grills and thought I was going to be arrested and incarcerated! Unreal! By the way, does the fuel have a warning label telling you not to eat the contents? Might have to get me one of those stoves, but only if I'm qualified to operate it ;-)

  • do a search for "ghillie kettle" ;-)

  • @guned6666 also called the "kelly kettle" I have the small 1 pint version, lightweight and quick!!! What i like about it is the fact u can use some small fire wood to boil water anywhere....

  • @shane0858 thats my thought, you don't have to carry fuel around. :-) You can use whatever comes in handy.

  • i could make that easy! booh yeah! good bye trioxane, hello sterno.

  • Good ideal darrin not a fan of camp stoves but looks like this Is a little different ideal I think there's room in my haversack for it

  • one day Ima take everything I learned form your videos and just dissapear from society and live of mother nature. nice vids dave you inspire me. ; )

  • @liljoke2050 Been there did that for 2 1/2 years.Lonely is all i can say well mabye Beautiful also.

  • @liljoke2050 Amen brother, amen!

  • Nice vid Dave, a lot of places I go to hike in Ohio you are not alowed to have open fire so I made my own pop can stove to heat up my coffee!

  • Some type of wind screen is essential to improve your burn time and fuel efficiency. i use hvy aluminum foil, but it can be anything.

  • I like it. It don't spill and could be filled with alcohol or other. Some thing to consider. Might use rolled up cotton or toilet paper as a wick if liquid fuel is used to refill the same can? .The can and stand are a nice, small and secure package. Sorry to say and it may be hard to believe, but some folks shouldn't play with fire. Passing along tribal knowledge as you are doing is the antidote for some. We continue to learn, and perhaps are learning to teach as well.

  • Dave do you consider yourself a "Comon man" ?

  • kind of random tip i learned once... use the back of your hand to test for heat. If you have miss judged the back of your hand is burnt not the part you use all the time.

  • @wh1skeyblood True, but the tradeoff is that if you have thick pads on your hands (like I'm sure Dave does!) you're probably less likely to be burned anyway if you use those parts. But for someone like me who doesn't get out as much, it's a great tip! Thanks!

  • Doesn't come much simpler than that - brilliant idea :)

  • I've been using an trangia stove to boil and cook food pretty good stove

  • Dave, Your latest videos remind me of the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". IF you need a Indian chasing you around the country side, let me know >:)

Note: you can add rolled Carbon Felt (see Home Depot) and just fill up can to absorption with Alcohol; should last 60 mins, boiling 2-cups water in 4 mins.

  • I like, but I'd also like to add that camp fires are bad in popular camp areas as people tend to acquire wood in non sustainable ways.

  • Nice stove! Its very similar to the swedish army survival stove though.

  • I did something similar to this last weekend. Works like a champ. Glad to see someone selling them and for cheap.

  • Dave are you in your background ?? Because bear man vs wild got caught in the hotels lol

  • Yeah, very cool.

  • A lot of backpackers have switched to Alcohol stoves to cut weight and save money on the price of fuel. They can be purchased from several cottage industry type businesses, most big box retailers, and the internet for $10-$100 or made at home from soda cans (penny stoves). One bottle of HEET (gas line antifreeze - pure Methanol) in the yellow bottle will cover most overnight and weekend trips for one person for under $2. If you have not checked it out you should.

  • why not use a hexi stove, same idea but u can hold the fuel within the stove and their like $5 at a surplus store

  • Simple, inexpensive, and easy to use. Great product, Dave!

  • Excellent setup and concept Brother.

Just a thought: you may want to include a small windscreen with those kits (aluminum flashing or heavy foil)... as you know the wind is usually blowin' out there, and a windscreen makes all the difference in the world for efficiency.

  • Had to dislike this one, to repackage a can of stern-o and charge 8 bucks is a rip-off. Why wouldn't you demonstrate a pop can alcohol stove? They are basically free to make and a 12 ounce bottle of fuel (heet) can be bought for 2 buck or less in some places. It only take 1 to 1.5 ounces of fuel to boil 2 cups of water.

I really enjoy your other videos and love your show, this one just had a lot of bad information in it.

  • yeah, we should find him and kick his bloody arse!

  • The nice thing about this is it is quiet and simple backpack stoves are much louder .

  • great idea. "Down n dirty".

  • the tommy cooker , very effective piece of equipment

  • Sounds great, but how do you put the fire out? It's that metal part you're selling? Also, what type of fuel is that, just a sterno can?

  • @Atkrdu you put the lid back on.

  • great adaptation of the british tommy cooker, and very effective.

    keep it up

  • should I feel guilty about preferring my canteen stove and cup with a trangia over this?

  • @karlhungusjr1 Hehe. Alcohol is even more common man that this...you could theoretically make it yourself! I'm not sure how the burn times compare, though?

  • @mysss29

check out youtube user hiramcook. I think he's done just about every burn time test imaginable.

  • sterno is a great thing to carry.. and that mini add on is an awesome common man kit! love it.. thanks!

  • Dave I have always loved you videos on here and have seen pretty much all of them. I am really loving these videos you have been doing lately ie. the long hunter videos are great. P.S. the beard goes great with the long hunter and yurt videos.

  • I loved the yurt video series. What is a reasonable price for a good wool blanket?

  • like the beard dude

  • Hey dave have you thought about making the same device but for the larger sterno can? just wondering, keep the great videos coming

  • Ferro

  • Can u light it with a ferries rod?

  • Dave look different the that beard...

  • Will you take an esbit stove as trade in? lol. I can see that simple, straight forward heating system replacing the folding stove in my pack...

  • Simple but effective, I don't like things to be more complicated than they have to be. It's small and it gets the job done, I love it. Most likely will be picking one up when I can. Thanks for the demo and great video Dave, always appreciated!

  • Pretty slick

  • Erecting a small wind shield will improve boiling times, the idea is very similar to what used to be called a "plumbers stove"

  • Who the hell disliked this video?

  • @RedDemon99 they are called "trolls" and its wise not to notice them :D

  • @ApprenticeBushcraft YouTube has too many trolls..

  • @RedDemon99 Cody :) he doesn't believe in hillbilly stuff

  • @killa123211 LOL. Cody is a good guy but he is getting on my nerves. He is always bitching at Dave about the animals he goes after but then scarfs it down.

  • @RedDemon99 bear grylls and his only fan

  • @RedDemon99 people that would not know how to survive in the wild, since all of this information is above their mentality, that's who would dislike the video.

  • @RedDemon99 Who the hell dislikes ANY of his videos?

  • Comment removed

  • @RedDemon99 I did because its a sales pitch for off brand sterno for his price i can buy a whole brigade of tins of sterno.

  • It's always the simple things that get overlooked for a ridiculously long time when looking at them in hind-sight. This has got to be one of the greatest ideas I've seen in a very long time.

  • another yet simple, but affective video.

  • will this work on the tapered camper guyot as well as the regular bottle?

  • @Ghillieman2011 I think the idea would be to heat the water straight to the cup instead of the bottle. A sterno isn't going to have the heat to boil 32oz through a single wall stainless steel bottle, but it'll rip out a 12 oz cup no problem.
