  • Yes this was a recovery attempt of the previous days failed attempt. What is left out is after these three go in the water, they send another boat in with two sheriff deputies to rescue the three new victims and that boat gets sucked under as well!

  • Now wait a minute, the narrator says that a fireman was drowned during a rescue the previous day....so is this video showing a second drowning...in other words, this is the third set of people to go under at this spot?

  • creature craft rescue boats could have saved these people

  • How hard is it for people to see this picture. Don`t fuck with the dam(swimming boating anything) It`s not the dam thats dangerous it`s the people who think they can get close to it .Go play in the street.

  • Far out- no bouyancy aids and they were trying to get out a body - not even a live person- who'd already died in a previous rescue. What a sad way to go. I'm glad that there's more awareness out there these days but unfortunately we still see far too many contemporary news reports of people risking their lives in the water- generally because they don't even know the risks involved. Posting informatives is a great learning tool - for those sensible enough to take it on board.

  • Wow i did not even know how dangerous thay are! Thanks for putting that on online! What are those sort of dam's used for anyways?

  • they are used to contain the river levels but are a terrible idea. I know I watched a close friend of mine get sucked into one. Luckily her lifeguard certified dad jumped into the hydraulic and pushed her out. theses need to be taken care of in a bad way.

  • Thanks for taking the time and letting me know. If you get stuck in 1 can you dive right down and push away from the wall? Do you know what i mean? There must be a way you can swim away from it.

  • i am pretty sure i think about that all the time. i think that if you let it take you to the bottom you can swim out f the hydraulic. what really makes these dangerous is the life jacket that holds you on the surface making it impossible to swim to the bottom

  • To the rest of you good people I apologize for the outbursts at the punks.

As a volunteer at my local state park I took it upon myself to rescue a family that canoed into some rapids at high water. There was no time to seek help. I've no qualifications for swift water rescue (except for a course in small craft water safety & I grew up on that river). With lines, carabiners & pulleys I keep in my canoe one by one I got the family safely to shore.

I hope I never have to do that again.

  • To Kai Konane & medic27205: Thanks to the both of you maybe a few more lives will be saved. I'm doing my part by informing those I can about low-head dams. Keep up the good work.

Please excuse me while I deal with a piece of racist, immature trash, that has somehow slimed its way into this life-saving educating post ('tis a shame. he could learn something from it if he'd only grow up), so I'll take out the garbage and thrash the trash on its own site.

  • To he95: you sick, pathetic, little boy. Some day you'll have to personally deal with realities like this one and it will be a family member. When it does happen I hope you'll remember the post you left here. I don't want it to happen to you but life has a way of making you face your past. Grow up before it's too late.

  • I had no idea your boat could get sucked into one of those dams like that... How frightening...

  • My father was Binghamton Firefighter John C. Russell who died during this rescue. I would love to hear why you decided to post this online.

  • I am sorry for your loss. I did not post this video but I use this video to train other fire fighters and rescuers of the dangers of lowhead dams. Quite frequently they do not realize how dangerous they can be until they see a video demonstration. I know it will not bring your father back, but maybe we can prevent another death.

  • Thank you for your response. I hope that it does save lives. My father would approve.

  • To dotn1324: You're just another child that can't think of anything original and worse yet you have no concept of a death in the family. You obviously have had too sheltered a life. The real shame of it is that man was brave enough to give his life in trying to save one. And scum like you expect someone like him to save your life when you're dying from your own stupidity. When that time comes I hope you remember what you posted here and NO ONE bothers to save your sorry ass.

  • This is the infamous rock bottom dam "incident" that basically started the whole swiftwater rescue instruction business.

  • Man that is rough! Keep up the good work promoting water safety and paddling in Iowa!
