I have a 1999 Nissan Sentra which my steering wheel is now hard to steer and the horn sometimes honks when I put a lot of effort. I checked my power steering fluid and the container is empty and full of black grease around it as if the fluid overfilled. Is that normal or should I get it checked for any leak or blockage problems before adding new fluid? I was told it may be the rack and pinion. But I am not sure, since I am just learning about my vehicles. Thanks for the videos, they help too.
@ncrdisabled Yes, The power steering system is much simpler than an Auto transmission so any formulation will work and will not damage the power steering system. Use more caution on a Honda though. They have special formulations on their trans and steering fluid. If your system is leaking you should fix it to avoid spilling out fluid.

@abe76090 Is sounds as though the rack may have gone bad. You could try to add fluid to it if it's dry, but you may want to have it checked.

Dang, I could've saved some money by just using ATF. But instead I bought PSF that was more expensive...

@mrjost55 Only use ATF in a pinch. I recommend staying with Power Steering Fluid.

There are different types of transmission fluids can any of these type be used in a pinch as power steering fluid?
