The guy on the Harmonica looks like Michael Winslow, the sound effect guy in "Police Academy" movie. I think its him and he is making the harmonica sounds with his mouth, look closely that harmonica in is hand is fake.
I suspect that there must be plenty of other videos of the shows at Chicago Fest in those years. Back then the pier was derelict and on each side they lined up about 10 stages or so to allow simultaneous performances all afternoon and evening. One ticket allowed you to see it all. Who had this video material. Please post it if you have it. It is of top historical significance in addition to its spectacular artistry.
Answer to Nangus01 - No, I can see & hear & feel the ways where music players are right or wrong. It's sensitive. It's not a judgement. I like the 1st Winter's album w.W.Dixon, also the one w.Sonny Terry. There, you meet some respect for the Blues. After that, I shouldn't tell as much. Johnny Otis had a good sense of what I mean. Chick Willis too, when he revolted against those injurious white blues clubs.
That "over zealous" mania. SRV is not in my good books too !.
If you want to base your music tastes around an artists personal life or character go listen to the Jonas brothers you twit, all kind of brilliant musicians and artists of all forms have been and are complete douchebags, so what?
@frettedfriend1964 .........I'd disagree with you there.....but hey I play harp and you are a friend of the fretted.....so maybe don't fret 2 much .....harp envy is understandable, it's such a great addition to and vitally essential to so many blues songs.......& for me at least is synonymous with the blues.......but yes we all have had the horrible experience of the over zealous &less nuanced players over playing & playing over the vocals or guitar.......but Mojo Bufford here ain't one of 'em !
You're a Winter's fan. I'm not, as I'm not a Steve Ray Vaughan's fan, because their kind of connection with the Afro-Amercican Art seems wrong to me. Mr. Johnny Otis was in the right forms, helping it, having respect, like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, David Evans... These 2 dudes asserted themselves; they had been go-getters, muddy opportunists like mercenaries in the Blues Music which is soul, "religion" as Muddy said, not jungle and competition.
@JohnnyCavallo What an utterly depressing outlook. You're not a fan of Winters because he's white and doesn't feel obligated to patronize the artists he learned from? It's music for christs sake, and Muddy Waters didn't seem to mind all to much mm? But of course you know more about Afro American art than he would, letting a honky like Winters play with him.
@1horton3 yes! i was at his funeral on 41st king drive - in chicago and chicken head man was there with me - soon after willie dixon passed - i was at his funeral also - then koko taylor - i was at her funeral - see pictures of me and most of these greats at: arkansasred.mysite.com
I was there, standing against the stage, about 10 ft from where Muddy Waters was sitting, right next to the scaffolding that had all the BOSE 901 speakers on it
To this day, probably the coolest blues show i have ever seen....
Hail the Great Muddy Waters & Vale the Great Muddy Waters ! Smooth & supportive harp playing & nice guitar work.Easy & tight ........the blues just right !
Can anyone shed any light on the band members on this clip, especially the harmonica player ?
The movie Cadillac Records gives a moving & fairly honest depiction of the Chicago blues scene & Leonard Chess recording Muddy, the Wolf,Etta James,Chuck Berry & the incorrigible Little Walter. The acting & the music is superb !
That is George "Mojo" Buford on the harp. He passed on today (10-11-11). RIP.
