Beautiful show. I never imagined as a kid I would be watching Star Blazers in its original form on my phone. With Japanese subtitles no less. Unreal. Thank you so much.
"Hi Mom, Hi Dad. Miss you..... say what? There's no guns on the bottom half of our ship? Then we'll just have to hope that the Gamilons always attack from above. Well, gotta be going... Love you both"
Strangely enough, Starblazers didn't diverge too far in this episode except for losing Dr. Sado's message to Mee. One of the few that carried the full emotional weight of the original.
Any boss who would pour you sake and drink with you on the floor, shoes off, is a good boss. Admittedly, I doubt Okita would do it with other crew, just Kodai, someone he felt guilty towards to as well as looking forward to see him prosper like his older brother (or his deceased son).
I believe that it is also a tradition thing. If the boss is on the floor and pouring the drinks, you are allowed by custom to insult him as much as you want with no revenge afterwards
It's just an old trick to make the story more amusing. You know, like those failing kids suddenly finding themselves to be the finest operator of the most sophisticated robots(without any training!!), etc. Actually, Dr. Sado is said to be the "finest doctor" on earth. He appears in different Matsumoto works.
So Dr Sado gets to say goodbye to his cat! She seem to have drunk all of his sake and doesn't care much for the message probably because it looks as though she's been fixed.
P.S. I believe no more female crew members appear until series 3.
Getting sloshed with the Captain. Now that's how to say goodbye to Earth.

Why is a robot drinking sake?

Is it just me, or do you guys think this series was more dramatic and mature than the newer version of "Battlestar Galactica".
In this episode for example, there is no action, just melodrama.

what's with the cat bandages, did they need two attempts to neuter it?

saying your cat that space is endless...funny and yet melancholic in a few lines...no wonder the japanese poets invented haikus...

This episode shows; though we may have each other, human souls are downright lonely in the core.

So captain Okita and Kodai had a goodbye party on their own. Poor dr. Sado: he has no one on Earth... but his cat.

Gee, all that spring water must have come from a very good spring. Poor Dr Sane...he only called his cat.

This episode was another reason Yuki fell in love with Kodai still deeper. It was so manly of him to endure in silence the unbearable loneliness.

... prosper like his DECEASED older brother, from Okita's point of view.
My daughter BTW suggested for Okita, if he feels that lonely, to make friends with Analyzer.

The notes just said all female crew members were in hibernation.
I suppose the captain kept the key to that room.
