This is not completely true, the technology was developped by the company LUMIARTECNIA, I know this because I have been working on the site. MIT takes all the credit but the dirty job, including fountain material and sofware is made by Lumiartecnia.

amazing video!! just wanted to ask how did you make water look so real? how did you film it or render...? im a first year student and try to make video for my project!
Wow, I'm really looking forward to seeing this in its true form. I want to be an architect when I grow up and seeing modern creations by man like the water pavillion really inspires me to think of designs that are outside the box and really innnovative. I hope this will be a very successful and popular building. It's so interesting.
It is great! I saw last week how it is going and it is incredible!!! Really you have to join us in Zaragoza!
If you come you must listen a "JOTA" traditional folk dance and song from Aragon, but specially the one which is dedicated to Expo 2008....! It is so beautiful!
I am putting together a water video for a music festival that will happen here in LA on September 15th. I would love to use your video! I would certainly give you credit. Please contact me at d.agua @ yahoo dot com THANKS!
Yes, several people have worked on controllable screens made of water (including Pevnick, Julius Popp, etc.). The main difference here seems to be the interactive use of the technology, together with its more architectural applications (a building that can expand or shrink based on necessity and use).
How do they know when to open up the wall when people want to come inside? Is there a specific spot where people must enter, or can it be from all sides of the building? Sorry for my asking you if you don't know the answer, I just saw your comment and it looks as if you know a bit about this building
OK, typo -- yes, the Atlanta Olympics was in '96. And yes, Steve's company (Pevnick Design, in Milwaukee WI) has done several interactive systems -- including a hollow-square version for Siemens in the 2005 Machining Show in Hannover, Germany where two stage magicians coreographed their act (and music) with the waterfall images and, for the grand finale', made an assistant "appear" in the middle and walk out thru a hole in the image. It was really neat.
As several have pointed out, this technology has been around for some time -- Professor Steven Pevnick invented and patented the original system in 1979. His company now creates these displays worldwide, including the '94 Atlanta Olympics system and many shows for Daimler/Jeep.
it is another company who invented a similar technology, even before jeep's shows. Besides, that technology it is not interactive and it is meant to work indoor.
you could use lasers to trace outlines in the display, enhancing their visual definition, adding alternate visual elements, and allowing night displays.
Wonderful concept. There was something similar to this at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but not on this scale. I'd love to be the one to design graphics for falling water, especially since you could take advantage of the fact that the water falls faster as it gets closer to the ground... gradually elongating the graphic.
WOW thats an awesome design:)

This digital water wall technology is made by MIT, selected as Time magazine's "Best invention of the Year" in the field of architecture.

Thanks Hellen, actually it was the whole Pavilion, not the Water Wall technology, to gain Time's nomination.

I've seen something like this in 2005 in Hanover pneumatic fair. Cool thing indeed.

That was for Siemens and it was done by Pevnick Design. It was the cool 3d 4sided version.
If you want to see more look up Graphical Waterfalls by Professor Steve Pevnick. He invented the Graphical Waterfall (rainfall) in 1979.

itd be cooler if it was actually water.

This is an awesome concept and design. I'd love to see the final combined with lighting to add another dimension to it.
The collapsing idea is cool as well...as long as it doesn't mess up ;)
