I think that Sydney could be a boy or a girl. No indication is given either way. The only pointers are 1.) Sydney is spelled with a “Y” which is the common way to spell the feminine form of Sydney. But this really proves nothing, and 2.) The line where he states that Sydney “Told me I was looking at a dead man” This too proves nothing because the phrase is so common that it doesn’t point one way or the other.

It's still an awesome song whether you choose to think of Sydney as a boy or a girl.
