  • i always thought a hurdy gurdy is much bigger... like Anna Murphys hurdy gurdy^^

  • you are very lucky to have one hurdy gurdy, specially a gotschy´s

were i live most people would have to save for years to get the cheapest, they are expensive as hell

  • Yeahh !! I like !

  • That's beautiful, keep it up!

  • Wow! What an incredible instrument and what a beautiful song!

  • ich sehe... einen Dudelsack für kurzatmige Leute =P

  • I've had one of Gotschy's instruments for the last 10 years, and like Willie Nelson's battered old guitar, it seems to get better all the time. And it always sounds bette when someone else is playing it.

Unfortunately Helmut Gotschy had to retire from 'gurdy-making, but there are still quite a few good makers out there..

  • This is so nice!

    greets

  • I freakin want one.

  • Nice Hurdy Gurdy. Who made it?

  • how much did the hurdy-gurdy cost? I'm wanting to learn to play, but i dont know if it's in-budget for me

  • @Shadowchick25 A typical hg starts near $2000, so it's never really inside anyones budget.

  • @DutchThroat holy.... O,0 nevermind about playing a hurdygurdy :(

  • @Shadowchick25 Some organisations provide rentals, as I got this one.

  • @Shadowchick25 Howewer if you are into DIY you can find instructions to build one on the internet for about USD 20.- worth materials.

  • Awesome!

  • were do i get a hurdy gurdy in america

  • Very kewl!!! Where can I purchase one??

  • Too bad the hurdy gurdy is such a costly instrument it really looks fun to play.

  • Absolutely AWESOME!!!.

  • I what to get one of these really bad!!!! there so cool!!!!

  • I would love to hear 2 dueling hudy-gurdy's !!! :D

  • whats with all the weird edits in the video?

    otherwise pretty cool

  • really strange instrument, guess they were thinking well its hard to hit two much less three strings on a violinn, lets make it a little easier

  • this thing existed before the violin haha, its from before medieval times.

  • I might be buying a Hurdy Gurdy in a few months! it would be just so wickedly great to have one! amazing instrument, and thx for this amazing song, i already learned it on guitar.

  • Or check out Arkona even better band!

  • but do they play a hurdy gurdy? if not, i think ur missing the point

  • c mignon...deçu;-(

  • you guys should check out Eluveitie. They're a metal band that play, among other instruments, a hurdy gurdy

  • They are truly beast...

  • Hi thats a beautifull zanfona ¿where did you get your instrument?

  • I love it :)

  • I really want a Hurdy Gurdy. Saw one on Ebay for like, $1000 :(

  • Is that a Gotschy "Phoenix"?

  • yesh

  • where can u get them??

  • I can see, that you would have to be quite skilled to play one of these, no?

  • Not really

  • this is great!

  • i just love medieval tunes

  • Very nice. I have to find me a hurdy gurdy.

  • Very nice perform!!!

  • Nice!

  • hey, I'm not exactly sure how a hurdy gurdy works, how do you change the bass note?

  • You don't. This one has C and G bass (drone) strings. They play all the time. You can either turn one off or both.

  • ohh ok, i see now, thanks!^.^

  • @DragonWorshipper But how you do it?

  • @DragonWorshipper You have an awesome name, you believe in Dragons?

  • Do you have a score sheet / notes for this?

  • Somewhere. I'll try to make a scan later this week.

  • Wasn`t there a Eluveitie song title call Andro?

Anyway, I like it and seem pretty interesting. I particularly like the dual voice.

  • Yes, there's many celtic based bands that have a song called Andro.

  • "Andro" is not the title of a song, it is a type of Breton dance (we count more than 200 different types of dance in Brittany). "Andro" (which means "in round") is one of the most commonly played in festoù-noz (Breton dances party). There are a lot of tunes on which you can dance an "andro".

  • Fine tune ;-)

But Andro is not medieval. It is an eveolution of the Pilé menu, a Renaissance dance.

  • how much does one of those instruments cost?

  • About 1200 euros....

  • yeah! more!!

  • it is....

  • sounds really nice!

Is the hurdy gurdy build by Helmut Gotschy?

    Phoenix Standard?

  • yep

  • what's the instrument called?

  • Don't people read anymore?

"A little experiment [...] the hurdy gurdy."

  • Listen to Eluveitie's Inis mona ;)

  • Sounds incredible, I'd love to hear more

  • i can't wait to get hold of one, just having that kind of money spare to get one.

  • @manmanII

    indeed! i want one 2 x'D

  • More!!

  • great job i realy enjoyed it. keep up the good work

  • sounds like a tune you'd hear from an old nintendo game.hehe

  • thats really good. i love it and didnt hear any mistakes

  • Sounds great. I'm also planning on getting hurdy gurdy myself this summer.

  • vid was cut lol

    watch the hand at 0:35-0:36

  • no shit, einstein

  • hmm that may be the switch between parts A and B....get a life noob

  • beauty

  • woooooo... this soo fucking fantastic...

    [(pio)]

  • i just want a hurdy so badly... :(

    oh, btw, GREAT!

  • this an amazing song... although it must have sounded much better in person

also... skwerl19890818 fuck you. this was good and DJ Andro sucks as a DJ... find some decent music

  • xD thx for the support :P

  • Man, this hurdy gurdy doesn't sound like it's called!! How much are they??

  • 1. rather bad tuning at my end

    2. camera's can't handle the frequency...

Helmut Gotschy builds pretty nice gurdies. This is the Phoenix Standard. It starts at a price of 1600 euros.

  • oh, yikes!! That's not cheap!!

  • hmm yeah that one of the minor problems of this instrument...

  • no i commented the dude saying this aint an andro :)

  • ah ok :P I was pretty sure I didn't get an email. Merry Christmas!

  • fuck u....:@

    what is this shit....

i tought it must be andro's new song or something else....

  • dude, what the hell? why get offensive right away? Andro is a type of dance or something like that from the middle ages... :s So no reason to fuck anyone...

  • I want to have an instrument like that!

  • this is an aesthetically-pleasing hurdy gurdy. I don't like the look of most, but this is good. It's all closed up, the bits are hidden and it looks sleek. Any information you could provide me with?

  • geil gibts dafür Tabs für Gitarre oder irrgendwelche noten ???

  • Andro findest du eigentlich sofort , is n einfaches und bekanntes lied.einfach mal bei google suchen

  • Most ennek mi köze van androhoz?

  • Jókérdés :) Pedig ennek a fajtának Főnix a neve. Jókat csinál a német mester. Olyat tervezek venni tőle.

  • dude this is not Andro

  • dude, it is. at least it says so on the music sheet...

  • this is a beautifully played andro. :)

There are several versions of the andro, maybe that confused you. It sounds different on the hurdy-gurdy.

  • dude, i swear this is an andro..

i think your confused, because andro is not only one song :P

andro's can be different. just surg the internet.

i checked it out,.. both andro and a scottish can be danced on this tune,..

so it definitely is a andro

  • was this a comment towards me? I never stated andro is a songtitle...

  • Very nice HG, Where did you get yours? Looks well polished or brand new. I'm trying to learn more about them to see if this is something I wanna do.

  • thats fucking awsum lol

  • vielle à roue/hurdy gurdy/wheel fiddle Same instrument just by other names, Lex.

Beautiful instrument, whatever name one uses

    :0)

  • Eluveite does do a modernized version of Andro, but because this is via hurdy gurdy is closer to the version by Faun which was played on bagpipes and various other instruments.

  • In my opinion both versions are very good. It depends of mood, which one do you want to hear in the moment. And if you know Faun you should know Sava too, am I right? Or maybe you know other music groups like them?

  • In my opinion both versions are very good. It depends of mood, which one do you want to hear in the moment. And if you know Faun you should know Sava too, am I right? Or maybe you know other music groups like them?

  • well be careful with Andro : it's a name of a dance in Brittany they are a lot of andro if you want to dance in a festnoz (nightfeast in breton speaking)

  • I love wheel fiddles so much.....

    Anyone ever heard of Eluveitie?

  • Eluveitie is one of my favorite bands ever.

Now I really want to learn the hurdy-gurdy

  • @nahima4

    i know right me 2

  • wow mann, thats very kool. Keep the medieval music alive! I love how people are getting more into it now, its really style to listen to, and i'm sure to play. I hink you played pretty well, good job.

  • sorry for my stupidity but is this Andro - Eluveite ?

  • i dunno... all i got was andro...

  • no, it's a different version

  • This is an Andro, its the name of a breton dance, and there are many melodies for this dance just named as "Andro" and I dont think this is the Andro that Eluveitie plays

  • Wonderful :)

  • i really should remove this video...

  • no!!!!!!!!!!

  • sure ill post a new one in a couple of days...including andro #2

  • where did you get your hurdy gurdy ?

  • im renting it from an organisation that also gives courses ;)

  • do you think you could give me name of organisation

  • i could but since you're from canada(?) i don't think it'll be of use to you, knowing the organisation is dutch ;). It's (very simple btw) Stichting Draailier & Doedelzak.

  • :( i wish i could play :(

  • Hi there, great tune! What andro exactly is this? Do you have the dots (music score) for it? Keep up the good work!

  • awesome instrument

  • yeah its pretty cool ;)

  • Very good. I like to hear a hurdy gurdy.

  • you may add rythmic like beatbox or drums behind and it will looking great !

  • OK so this is not for times when you have a headache. But, otherwise really nice.

  • lol, true, sometimes i really cant stand the sound.

  • i love the andro! good job!

  • Absolutely beautiful, I adore the sound of a Hurdy Gurdy, I would enjoy learning one myself.

  • captivating...sends me into a trance...

  • I'm really intrigued by the Hurdy Gurdy, I really want to know, is the tone effected by turning the crank faster or slower?

  • Not really. if you go to slow it will start to crack and squeek a bit due to the rosin on the wheel.

  • great! very great melody! 5 stars.

  • Awsome dude... truely Awsome!

  • An Dro is a name for a Breton folk dance... they named every song to which An Dro can be danced and they hand no name for also An Dro ;)

  • The an dro is not medieval. Probably no older than 150 years. And is still very much danced today

  • woops, that would be my mistake...you know the date wasnt on the sheet so...

  • Lol i found out during my course I'm skipping one key!

  • very nice~thank you and 5 stars! :-)

  • thank you!

  • are these keys or holes you are manipulating to get the melody, its a cool sound just needs an uptempo melody

  • if you want an uptempo melody, watch the masters and not the beginners (like me) :D thx for keeping the comments up!

  • jees couldnae whistle that one without hiding the sharp objects give me the great highland bagpipes anyday

  • lol, is that scottish? Yeah pipes are nice, but I'd go for gaita or cornemuse du centre ;) You probably don't wanna see me playing those (Stupid piece called Chanson de Nuit)

  • Wouldn't it be possible, to tune a (maybe a little thicker) melody-string in E, to get the harmonics played by one player? I think the phoenix got 2 melody strings, so it could be possible?

    regards

  • hmm great idea..i'll try that sometime...but as this is a G/C tuned instrument I don't know how far the strings will go....

  • I would search for Viola-Strings made for the specific pitch, that is wanted. How far i know, the Gotschys are made for Viola-Strings and use Corelli-Viola-G-strings bye the standard setting, so it should be possible to find the needed strings, in case that they are a note too high, downpitching a bit is never a problem.

That's what i like on HGs, they can be set up in so many ways.

  • so i see! Thanks, I might just look for those strings one time. Thing is, I don't have any idea if i'll be able to get new strings on. But you'll never know. Thanks anyway!

  • yeah that would be great, try to find some miore people and make a band vor folk or medieval musik.

  • great

  • thanks, i'll put up a proper version some time...
