  • Great Video...

  • I completely agree.

  • i agree

  • Will you be downloading apps that are 3GB over your DSL connection?

  • For example, an MP3 file you download that has some nasty exploit code in it. That actually won't be much of a problem if you are using a decent player that has been updated to the latest version, the exploit will be designed to take advantage of a flaw in the software's code, if it has been fixed, the MP3 won't be a problem for you. The same applies to all files except executable files, which will simply execute raw code on running it and run wild.

  • It still won't help with the people who use out-dated software and turn off automatic updates. Also the type of people who just run any Java applet with the assumption that they cannot harm you because they are in your browser. There's also the misconception that downloading a file but not running it will give you a virus, this is wrong. You need to understand that it's how the OS interacts with the piece of code (the file) that causes the problem. Continued in another comment;

  • Cnet bundling malware in open source downloads?!#*!! That's the worst news I've heard all year.

  • almost every linux distro has its own repo and most of them have an appstore too

  • using a banana here to watch this video, is that also a computer?

  • LMAO..."ofcourse that doesn't protect them from the internet, but thats a completely different video"...hmmm IS IT???

  • HEYYY LAAAAADYYY!!!!

  • Chris are you Jerry Lewis's son?

  • YAY he's finally talking about windows :D

  • Comment removed

  • I love it when people say that they need a virus scanner coming from windows to mac thinking it's the exact thing even when apple brands macs as having no viruses....

  • App-Stores don't help browser exploits though... for any platform.

  • Replaying 02:30 over and over again. Hilarious.

  • agree ;p

  • 01:40 should be what works for you MAY not work for somebody else

  • I defo agree, Chris.

  • Seeing as Android is Linux based, and iOS is Unix based, then absoloutely theyre functional operating systems.

Operating system: Software that controls the allocation and usage of hardware resources such as memory, CPU time, disk space, and input and output devices.

  • There's no need to be so aggressive Chris. Good video though.

  • Why u mad bro?

  • OMG.....That was good ! LOLOLOL.....you kind of sound like me when I start to lose it.....LOL.

I do think you are absolutely correct as well.

    Excellent video.

  • you sir, are a digresser.

  • "Just finished downloading everything on the internet......twice"-Chuck Norris

  • nice vid. don't lose patience :(

  • @Kerns0Phoegan Chris is talking about how the security of computers have increased by a substantial amount, espessially because of the rise of multiple app stores in the past couple of years. Although you hold a valid point, it is not the topic on what Chris was discussing.

  • Also, encase you missed the very obvious and clear signals. PEOPLE HATE being locked into ONE APP store. Proof vvv

    -Jail Broken I-phones

    -Jail Broken PS3

    -Mod Chips (PS, PS1, PS2, Xbox/360)

-Countless ANTI-Security breaking measures (For legally obtained software/games)

All because people HATE being restricted to limited Choices and being forced to change entirely if they dislike/disprove of something in XXXXX (any given company, platform, Device, etc)

So, You need to double check your facts

  • I hope you get this Chris.

Let's say that you have an app store, and it's the only way to get new/different applications.

Then, that would be equal to, their being ONLY malls, that host stores, and you would be unable to go to any 1 store without going into a mall first.

-Yes it can be more regulated, and can be safer (in both examples)

-It also drives up costs, with overhead and limits what can be sold (creating censorship)

malls and app stores are Good, if they aren't the only dam choice.

  • Is a iPhone a computer, every time I say a Apple is a computer to a Apple person they look at me and want me to drink orange juice.

  • @DBSpy1 Yes because it computes information Pro Apple zealotry is just so psychotic that logic & common sense are foreign concepts to the zombies that are zealots

  • @DBSpy1 Yes it's a computer, obnoxious Apple fan zealots just refuse to live in reality

  • should go through Applications store because of the few IDIOTS who 'refuse' to learn how to use the device safely that they bought, and screw over the Vast majority of users who know what the heck they are doing (or enough) to not screw their device up, and Lock them into fewer choices because you believe 'direct 3rd party' software is outdated/outmoded concept that should moved away from. That's shameful to say at the best.

(example of what I mean to follow)

  • I'll also state, how you (chris) Clearly set aside ' High End gaming' onto the side and take it out of the arguments to make your self look better and how technology is evolving is asinine at best. Yes, Technology is spreading and going mobile also, that's good considering that people will be able to choose what fits them better then others (and not be locked in, like Mac does all the time)

Though, what bothers me is that you actually believe that direct 3rd party software is outdated & ...

  • windows vista still has halo 2 though

  • Also, Chris. YOU AREN"T THE ONLY ONE USING THESE DEVICES EITHER, and it would be fair to say [put up or shut up] about how going fully mobile, or APP Store Downloads only, and have a a valid argument.

I'm not saying that computing isn't spreading to the mobile devices, but when you clearly bash the 'beta build' of windows blending the mobile/Desktop experiences (or trying to) then fully back the crap (and I mean crap) that Mac does, with it experience shows you not actual fully examine things

  • Cloud computing is foolish at best, for security reasons. Also App Stores is a VERY slipperly slope, and becomes very BAD when it's the ONLY way to get applications. (When you have only one source for new stuff, it's a recipe for censorship and monoply)

  • Does OS descriptions get 'U Mad Bro?'

  • I agree

  • What are those lights above the monitors? Are they used for anything? or are they just for looks? I've allways wondered

  • Anti-Virus subscriptions, and malware bytes, super antispyware, MYWOT, softpedia.

Stop visiting porn, megaupload, rapidshare, p2p, torrents.

  • See I agree with the sentiment in this video however PC Gamers know full well the power of the app store. Just look at the popularity of Steam. Whether the Desktop PC is or will a platform of choice when it comes to games is another question but I guarantee you the majority of PC Gamers have a smart phone whether Android or iOS based and play games on them and welcome the day that great games are playable on them.

  • @andrewmalcolmriddler True but that doesn't mean PC gaming is dying. Mobile is just an additional type of gaming & since mobile devices have become so capable, Mobile gaming has gained mainstream popularity & acceptance

  • What about remote exploitation and worms on windows, those attacks don't require a user to download and run a program, the are vulnerable just by not updating their current software and being connected to the internet.

  • Hmmm... I bet Chris likes going through those full body scanners at the airport and having TSA gals look at this junk. That is what app stores feel like. :/

  • What are Internet gate keepers? Which are good ones to look into for macs with no antivirus? Thanx

  • Chris computer literally means "Thing that plays Crysis on max settings." :/

  • AV products will not dry up. An app store will not protect you from drive-by downloads.

  • What microphone are you using by the way?

  • Why don't you use your videomic?

  • Hey LockerGnome, I heard that Before you sell your computer, smash the hard drive. Is this true? Google what i said, it is on the newspapers in UK. Make a video on this topic please. And when you make the video, like RayWillaimJohnson, take a screenshot of the person who asks the question and put it on the video. :)

  • so maybe people that are developing for windows can have their application verified and put in the app store?

  • Anything that COMPUTES is a COMPUTEr

  • chris when are you going to buy the licsesn so you can have your sound back on upstream page

  • y u mad bro?

  • So you now gonna livestream both on ustream and on youtube? You rock Chris Pirillo. Cheers

  • I buy games on Steam. It's so much easier... :P

  • I feel like i've just been told off :-(

  • on operating system.... operates things....

  • chris u rich so go and buy the lisecen so you can have your sound on your upstream page chris

  • I love window 7 and my macbook pro, prefer to play on Windows

  • i just don't like mac because of there prices

  • Why you mad, bro?

  • pc gaming ftw! :D

  • he ain't drinking that tea lmao

  • came here to see what he had to say about the video title, NOT A FREAKING RANT ABOUT IF A PHONE IS A COMPUTER!!!!!!!

CHANGE THE TITLE TO "are smartphones computers" or if it ever gets to the topic at hand, "are smartphones vulnerable to malware"

  • DRINK THE GOD DAMN TEA!

  • @jaredspeters thanks *smile I actually use both of those now an Highly recommend them. Further I planned on a virtual machine to watch long term performance issues.

  • I agree. Chris you have a good point apple, and Amazon are good gate keepers with their online software stores. They have checked to make sure that the the apps are not harmfull. Plus their are apps that I would not know about if apple and amazon did not have them in there stores.

  • geez drink the tea already....

  • I agree with you. That is all.

  • you havnt "E'd" me later in a while....

  • So I'm a fucking computer??? xD

  • I'm building a new machine and want tp keep it in the best of health, my plan for trying new software(I love trying new software) is to install it on a virtual machine for a probation like period then moving it over to my main os what are your thoughts community and chris?

  • @dotails Good idea just ensure your virtualized machine isn’t connected to your main machine

  • If you get Malware or any kind Viruses... The only person to blame, is the End User, simples :)

  • @FilmTrailersChannel Not always because some malware can be quite tricky & can even fool an highly experienced user

  • @MechaBlazeEagle If you don't fully trust the source you are downloading and installing from, and you get viruses, that is the end users fault. Don't get me wrong, there are very good hackers and crackers that can phish and create phoney websites and use Email, but if you have an excellent Virus and Malware scanner, and you scan all the information coming into the computer and scan all the programs you want to install, you should be okay.

  • @FilmTrailersChannel I'm well aware of that & take proper precautions I was stating nothing is 100% secure no matter how good ones precautions are

  • @FilmTrailersChannel I'm well aware of that

  • @MechaBlazeEagle Well aware of what?

  • @FilmTrailersChannel And that's what I do. I virus/malware scan every file & program I download.

  • @MechaBlazeEagle That's good. That is the best way to less the percentage of getting viruses.

  • @MechaBlazeEagle Sorry to inform you that quite literally, scanning is almost completely useless realistically. If a virus is good it won't be detected, that's the point. Lack of information on how people get viruses and how software works is what leads people to being infected.

  • In some cases malware = Job security

  • true words.

  • "Y U MAD BRO"

    ;)

  • So what part of the video shows how to stay safe from computer malware??

  • @NoLMAOnade He just spent the whole video explaining it.

  • @NoLMAOnade I would be interested to know as well...and why did he mention PC gaming??

  • @NoLMAOnade Chris is the malware, to stay safe: un subscribe and block!

  • mac osx FTW!

  • Preach it Brother

  • Its going 2 ways. mobile n cloud

  • I agree

  • The Human brain is a computer... An organic computer that "COMPUTES DATA" as is any artificial or organic Data processor... it's not rocket science ;)

  • I've used F-Secure which comes with my internet. I've used it since 2003 and not once have I had problems with viruses on my Windows with it. And I've downloaded a ton of stuff and installed it; most of the time it's quite obvious where it is safe to download a file and where it is not. I don't know why it isn't obvious for everyone. I personally don't feel I need these 'appstores', but I guess those help some people stay safe on the internet.

  • They should call it the Microstore.

  • I've been running windows for year and have no extra firewall or antivirus software on my windows 7 machine. There is one more form of protection, common sense. Like you said, people get viruses, and they get them because they don't think before downloading.

  • One of these days, I'm going to be paid big bucks to rant on about whether or not a phone a computer...

  • I'm glad Microsoft is going in a direction that helps protect its users and make them feel safe when installing applications. I agree that with windows 8 you will see a drastic reduction in malware, spyware, and stupid toolbars that get installed with software by users who don't know any better.

  • 02:37 It upsets you because some geeks don't seem to share the same opinion as you on certain things, that includes where the market is evolving. The market has always been kind to gamers and there will always be products for them that they will enjoy.

Wait for Ivy Bridge before saying how the tablets are the future.

  • @Tr1pTr0p I think tablets are good for information & light multimedia consumption & trivial time wasting games but not for graphics intensive, hardcore gaming

  • Hey Chris, never seen you so angry... But, you're right, in many ways. I'm a windows user, a windows phone user, an android user. Even an iOs user. BUt, from learning by own mistakes, you're right, it's just a safer way to get programs, binaries etc. through app-stores. And, also at the beginning you were right, not JUST those things, you had shown are computers, everything electronic, which forfills a purpose, is a computer, even a car stereo is a computer. I wish you luck, in your arguments.:)

  • Chris - wrong - piracy doesn't give you malware, especially on open-source Android apps, secondly, even mostly of pirated software on Windows is in 97% completely clear. See some statistics. Appstore in Windows 8 is copy/paste something from many Apple OS-es. That's already known. You mentioned here Ubuntu, Ubuntu can be example to many many OS-es. And also I like Android mobile phones more than Iphone. Do you know reason? - REASON IS Iphone is CLOSED-SOURCE arch. No thanks, Linux FTW

  • Everyone who talks shit about Macs doesn't either have one, or hasn't spent much time on them. Ignorant and prejudice people make me sick.

  • No you're right, computing really isn't moving in our direction :(

  • Chris is right about CNET I used to trust it now it seems that almost all software comes with a tool bar are some other crap you don't need this is called adware (or malware) The classic example is the Ask tool bar. A lot of people who don't know any better can have several tool bars on their browser without realising what it is

  • Microsoft has recently announced that there will be a store for windows 8 which proves Chris wrong!!

  • The definition of a computer on the dictionary in Mac OS X Lion:

an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

  • Great video.....check out make money fasts dot com

  • I agree with you, app stores are a good idea but there needs to be more applications available on these app stores.

  • If I'm not wrong, either your MUG had something Cold in it or Nothing. Cuz that Mug appears to be Magic One..I mean the one which turns white when any hot liquid is poured...;P

  • P.S. Wouldn't you consider steam as a sort of appstore? What operating system was that pioneered on? How many years before apple started using an appstore was steam released? And how does an appstore equate to bad news to gamers? And with your definition of whether or not a mac gets viruses... the same can be said for any operating system. A gamer must have stole your girlfriend in the past or something. I'm a gamer, and I welcome appstores such as steam.

  • This is the exact reason I am trying to push people towards iOS. My mother who turns 60 next year has never become 100% familiar or comfortable with Windows, is perfectly capable of using her iPhone 3GS. She downloads apps and games from the app store often and more importantly for me, I know she's safe.

  • Ever Since I Was Introduced To Computer, It Was Windows All The Way....Right from School to Your Work Place...

  • I think Microsoft is a virus. Been with Mac for 5 plus years and no problems no viruses.

  • Apple is good but the price they charge for laptop parts is just a f%%king joke, my only gripe!

  • Hey Chris, what level are you in skyrim?

  • Do you treat your computer like a person ?

  • you look like that guy from ghostbusters.

  • Is a calculator a computer? And if yes does it has an OS?

  • People are at the mercy of their own stupidity.

  • PC gaming will never go away. EVER. Nor will it diminish in size. EVER. Why? The simple fact is new games using new engines need a need graphics card to run it on? Who tests these graphics cards? Studio's who have contracts with NVIDIA and AMD to test prototype cards for a few years so that by the time they hit the market, the game is out and the card is out and functioning properly. These companies will never go away either. EVER.

  • You nailed it. Open garden vs apple's garden of Eden.

  • Don't click the free virus scan

  • Hey Chris, please review a "mind machine". Maybe this one from Amazon:

Mindplace Procyon AVS System Light and Sound Meditation Mind Machine

I want to know if they really work, or if it's a bunch of bullcrap.

    Thanks!

  • Mac antivirus is a waste of HD space.

Why? Because all previous Malware for Mac's have already been negated through OSX updates.

How about future malware? Malware on a Mac is so damn rare. When one comes up, it always makes headline news on tech sites raising awareness. This is then followed an Apple OSX update.

  • how do you stay safe? never go on adult websites or anything adult related on your pc. never go on .ru. download an antivirus. any questionable website you want to view, view them on a playstation 3. problem solved.

  • I think gamers already might be familiar with the appstore model, considering both Origin and Steam.

  • You mad bro?

  • I agree, chris!

  • There is such a thing as an inferior OS, that's why Hitler made apple

  • I'll make myself safe thanks.

  • Chris, lets face it, vista is inferior(ALWAYS)!

  • Your right all the way

  • I never trusted CNET, softonic and the whole other bunch of third party software providers. Filehippo is the way to go.

  • Should the car drive itself?

  • Ubuntu with their app store is great, and apple's is also. I think most people should update to windows 8, but i like tweaking things to get it to work, and that is why i have a hackintosh.

  • Every time I have used a mac in graphics design department, I have had problems with it.

And these are top of the line models.

If you want no problems, do not use a computer.

  • I share you view 100% on this topic.

  • He is right !!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Reting this video is relative

  • Ok the whole time I was waiting for a reference to porn which came (although indirect) at the last 3 seconds. I'd say 10% of viruses come from what Chris is talking about and the rest from porn

  • @XxMrWink3rxX lol you must download a lot of porn.

  • I also think google is drifitng farther from the marketpalce than windows.

  • I agree 100%. It's true, computers don't get viruses, people do. I have to admit i do enjoy downloading stuff on windows... it's a shit ton of fun :D. I do agree however that the market is going into an app store direction. Microsoft as even gone that way with live estentials '11.

I do howver think that on site downloads will always have some sort of place on desktop OS's. For less mainstream contect it is a-lot more productive.

When it comes to legit apps and games- market all the way!

  • I do want microsoft to include an app store, HOWEVER I have a lot of stuff that actually MAKES my PC, mine. And these are small programs that I doubt I'd find in an app store.

  • With Macs, the Apple app store will only allow apps in the near future have to be sandboxed. That can effectively cause developers to take a lot of features out that need deep level access to the Mac OSX. So for those software applications will have to be installed outside the Apples App Store.

  • Got a better question, how can I get the previous layout? I used to look for ajax_inex but it no longer exists so thats an even better question

  • The windows live markertplace is awesome! :D

  • This video was hilarious Chris is so funny when mad

  • I don't care what direction computers go in as long as I can play crysis bf3 and skyrim imma happy camper :)

  • i see the solution your getting at here. get the fuck off the pc unless you can afford all the expensive safe stuff

    ass

  • @DrOrphious79 Having a safe computing experience isn't expensive. Not all antivirus/anti-malware software is "expensive". Your either biased and/or uninformed about computer security

  • @MechaBlazeEagle having a safe computer experience is free if you know how, the thing here i disagree with is going through app stores and the likes for ALL software, which if you didnt notice gets expensive, getting a mac is expensive also, using itunes is expensive, for someone like me who dosent own much more than the pc and my guitar, the thought of getting a mac and paying apple all the way for computer use is just rediculous.

  • @DrOrphious79 I agree. I despise the idea of only one source existing for software purchases.

  • chris are you going to keep your sound off for ever

  • @beatmaker33 Sound is working fine for me ...

  • Love your videos Chris, but this just seems to be another Windows VS Mac idea.

  • I love the way you get mad!! You are adorable

  • i've had problems on every system i've come in contact with. finally i realized that yes, it is my fault and no one else's. i also figured out that the 6 or 7 programs i downloaded to keep me safe from stuff on the internet wasn't really helping me at all. i decided on one antivirus that was put out by microsoft, got rid of all the others, and stopped senselessly downloading. i haven't had a single virus since the initial clean up 6 months ago.

  • Microsoft is always the last. Just like Bill Gates stealing the idea of Steve Jobs.

  • Your brain is a computer.

  • 1 problem with what your saying is you can get malware and viruses from not downloading anything, that why an anti virus programs are still needed because you cant block the bad site that you open.

  • windows 8 = mac users move back to pc me gun to the head

  • you now your right win your right !!!

  • It's all the same to me. I would us a mac if I had one. I just have a windows, only because I need one for work. If I can do my work on a mac I would. If I said "I never had trouble with windows" I world be lying. If some one says that they never had any trouble with windows probably haven't been using windows that long.
