How come in the real videos of UP's Steam Engines (FEF-3 Challenger and Big Boy) there is no steam comming out for the whistle? Is it the high pressure boiler that causes the steam to do that or what?
I believe its because the 844 and 3985 (which is a Challenger BTW) use superheated steam for the whistles. The superheated steam doesnt leave a smoke plume.

You are correct sir they are blown on super-heated steam. That is why the whistles are right behind the stack it is over the superheater header
