  • Warner can go get fuck up the ass, if ya don't mind my sayin' so

  • You know, you can still listen to this song and many others that have been removed from youtube for FREE on myspace. Just start an account, search their database of music, and start adding songs. Not as good as having an MP3, but it works. It has allowed me to listen to a lot of great music that I would have otherwise never heard because I am not willing to pay for music.

  • Comment removed

  • is this Teresa Anderson? that sang on the Love song for Bobby long? soundtrack?

  • too bad for warner the song is old enough that the copyright is expired...

...IE they commited fraud in removing your video.

  • Down with the filthy Warner Bros bums!! NEVER see their movies, TV shows, or buy any of their music, forever after this!!!!!!!!!!

  • Warner Bro! Just another tool of the establishment to bring us down. :(

  • Well if thye keep removing shit from youtube. We need to stop listening to them...Fuck'em plenty of other great music on here

  • Warners has copyright to Stagolee?? The first published version was in 1910 by John Hammond. The SUCKICITY of fucking Warners cannot be overstated.

  • What the fuck is this? This takes a giant shit on Stagolee's head.

  • Fuck warner's

  • screw you warner brothers!

  • Fuck you, Warner

That's my take on yer worthless asses

  • WB has to make all the money they can off music they own, so they can overpay the studio executives in Burbank. Lame!

  • For "

    bearswilleatme "

    It's all about GREED.

The ASSHOLES are afraid they can't squeeze a nickel out of you so they WHINE and get things removed so NO ONE can see or hear them.

I HATE the GREEDY ZIONIST ASSHOLES. It's always about the Money with them, not about being a HUMAN being.

  • @Marblemania The pigs have gotten the legal period of copyright extended several times over the last decades. Now it's a mere 70 years after the copyright holder DIES.

They march up to Congress and get anything they want.

  • oh no! leave it ON otherwise people like me won't get to hear this chick's voice and how it kinda doesn't match but is way cool.

  • I love how these companies own american history and won't let anyone share it. no wonder we're all getting stupid.

  • As you wish, but first let me say:

    UP YOURS, WARNER!

  • Shall I take this video off? I've left it on as a protest against Warners but now think that's petty and useless.

  • Petty and useless can be fun sometimes. Especially when poking the big conglomerates.

Get a banjo and learn clawhammer frailing, then do your own version of Stagger Lee. They can't stop that and it's a lot of fun to do.

  • There's nothing petty about it. I really disagree with Warner's treatment of the musical community.

  • @maolchalium dude. i learned long ago. listen to your guts.fuck evereybodies opinion.their not wearing your shoes!

  • They did it to me too and removed all my pictures!

  • Yeah. They removed my intro outro by bonzo dog and MY pictures. Took me hours to put that lot together and didn't save a copy. Lesson learnt.

  • @DADRENO :These people are ridiculously greedy, unreasonable, and routinely ignore Fair Use laws, which MaceGill failed to mention.I'm supporting you & maolchalium with a subscription !

  • @DADRENO

Warner Bro! Just another tool of the establishment to bring us down. :(

  • Ok, so Warners removed the MJH audio; who added the present audio track? Was it Warners? It seems to have nothing to do with the vid.

  • I see that you say that Warners took down the M J Hurt audio. That is curious as it is in the public domain. You can get it from a site entitled 'PublicDomain2ten' (just google it). If you use that version, then I would have thought you have a right to dispute Warners action. Hope this helps.

  • Just because it is posted on that site does not make it public domain.

Now, the SONG is public domain (as MJH didn't write it and there is no known author) - but the SOUND RECORDING (ie MJH's version et al) is still under copyright and will be until possibly 2023 - perhaps longer depending.

This means anyone can record their own version - but you can not use MJH's version - or Furry Lewis, or any of the other versions out there without permission of the copyright owner.

  • Thanks for your comment Mace. I've looked on PublicDomain2ten. Not sure if it is the same version but I'd like to download it. Any idea how to download from pub dom 2 ten ?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I moved house in October.

  • who the fuck is this?

  • wait so who's the girl singin in this???

  • Great recording. Where was this recorded? Excellent guitar sound.

  • and they wonder why people pirate music. what a bunch of greedy creeps.

  • I didn't look through all of the comments, but wouldn't a song like this be public domain? I don't know copyright law, but I remember downlading some Mississippi John Hurt songs from Public Domain 4 U.

  • Americana is gone. They've been owning on it since the 60s, skeert we'll pass on some of our "revolutionary" spirit, one generation to the next.

Gums up the works when your mission is corporatism and global dominion. All them folks, making music and sharing it. We need new Americana. That's why these high tech street musicians on youtube get MY respect.

  • Fuck Warner and all the other douchebags who pull their music off youtube.

  • So a drunken John Barrymore is up on Mullholand drive at Errol Flynn's House. He is pissing over the side of the hill. He is asked what the hel he is doing. He explains that he is pissing over the hill hoping that it works its way down to Jack Warner. Yep, old John is trying to piss on Warner Brothers--God rest his soul.

  • So what song is this then? I actually really like it.

  • God, I hate when that happens!

Things gone be different when the Revolution come.

  • wtf happened to john hurt. what is this b.s. fuck warners.

  • Sorry. Pity but I never saved a copy of it. Didn't relise that Warner's were in need of the money. Or maybe they just don't like a free advert.

  • i mistook this for 'stagger lee' by nick cave and the bad seeds. the words are raunchier (and then some) in the cave version. you might be interested. the lyrics are in the same vein.

  • Sorry. But Warner's made me remove the John Hurt sound track as they hold the copyright.

  • If you like, you can use mine ... the SOUND recording of "Stagolee" by MJH may be copyrighted, but the song with its various versions is not - MJH wasn't even the first to record it.

  • Thanks for your offer. Very decent of you. If you're ever in Wales I'll buy you a pint. Cheers.

  • It's nice to find someone who has held onto the old recordings.

Thanks for posting this. It's on my favorites.

    Chas

  • Warner's has just made youtube remove it.

  • Great vid to go with music by the master. Many thanks, Chris.

  • whats the movie TOMBSTONE have to do with anything?... crappy video. one star.

  • Dallas Texas has a huge collection of records on the second floor. They had this record on reserve. I had to check it out one other way. I'm still playing the blues that most people never heard and I keep on playing it in the name of John Hurt. Praise God!

  • so ,the second floor of Dallas Texas...must be a BIG second floor!

  • By the way, I dig your Viv Stanshall profile picture.

  • A gem,thanks.

  • No one can or could finger pick better than Mississippi John, thanks for the record!

  • Gotcha\ cool tune

  • just delicious...no way but deliciopus

  • This is sweet.

  • I have been racking my brain for ages to find the album that had this and some of my other all-time favs on...finally found it..one of the first blues albums I owned and lost track of...it is great to hear it again..the album is the Immortal Mississippi John Hurt...gorgeous..oh the joys of modern technology..and hey, a very creative video !

  • stagger lee was a black pimp - not a white cowboy!!

  • Sorry about that but I couldn't find a black pimp here in the hills of Wales for the photos. He's not a white cowboy by the way. He's a shepherd.

  • i think kyanight is right. look it up on wikipedia:

"Lee Shelton (also known as Stagger Lee, Stagolee, Stackerlee, Stack O'Lee, Stack-a-Lee and by several other spelling variants) was a black cab driver and a pimp..."

  • None of that is really true. Stagolee is a mythical figure in black folklore. He wasn't any one particular person. He was a pimp, a train robber, and anything else you can think of that was bad-ass.

  • Actually, it's believed he was a real man. He was named Lee Shelton. Died in prison in 1912 of tuberculosis.

  • Seems it's still copyright though. Warner's has just had it removed.

  • my bestfriend lil' Jeff is stagga lee

  • Oh, yeah? So watch your back, or not...as you like.

  • Actually he was an irishman...

mississippi says so in is rendition of the song.

  • I think this man is the best guitar player I have ever herd.Just listen.Sounds like 2 or 3 guitars. But,it's just him !!Simply amazing !!! And he must have been about 65 or 70 when this was recorded!!!

  • @ 1fatpigrat

It might surprise you that he was only 35 when this was recorded in 1928.

  • Thanks for the info,database251.I really did not know when this version was recorded.I have a live version that was recorded in the 60's that his guitar playing is just as amazing on!

  • best version heard , good slideshow.

  • Hi Hurtfans! The Swedish group PIEDMONT PROJECT was invited for a concert at Hurts Museum in Avalon after Mary Hurt Wright heard their version of Stack-O-Lee Blues. Check it out here at Utube.

  • I've seen everything now! Stagger Lee as a white guy?

  • beautiful music. missisippi john hurt was one of the best, a true legend.

  • very nice!

  • The MOST UNDERRATED BLUESMAN EVER!

  • Thanks for posting this great song.

    Your video was fun to.

A local Blues Band "Larry & The Lilos" play a great version of this. Check them out if you come to Plymouth(UK) way down in the South.

  • oleeee

  • who got their hat knocked off??

  • luv it ,a treasure,

  • Excellent stuff...nice one.

  • Please reconsider. Stay on with what you're doing. People who actually do things are always criticized by those who don't. I appreciate what you did. The more imperfect the more Mississippi John would have loved it. Mike

  • I wish I could write a song like this, ga lee bum

  • i rly like the song. i also like the images of the video, it gives a good visual for what the song is portaying.

  • stack o lee blues by John Missisippi hurt is like the mona lisa one of a kind.

  • old farts rule!!!

  • I am really sorry this has upset you. I am posting within limitations, and a tad bit tongue in cheek, and I am aware the there are numeous erros in the postings I make. All I can say is I do my best at the time and do not wish to cause offence to anyone. I just want to enjoy my life and, maybe, bring pleasure to other people.

I do consider the comments people leave and I am considering withdrawing this from youtube.

    Malcolm

  • Incredible recording! Thank you so much for posting this. So many of us would have no opportunity to hear this version.

  • Just wanted to say I love this vid. Cheers.

  • catherineyronwode lighten up, just enjoy the good music. Must you live so relentlessly in the real world?

  • Love this ,Top drawer stuff man.

  • i would like to hear a heavy version of this with some screaming vocals and tons of reverb

  • lol why the fuck would you want reverb with screaming vocals

  • ummm. because it would sound cool. kinda like a punk rock version of this song. i guess ill do a cover of it cuz im so badass.

  • lol alright. tell me how it goes

  • modern life is war "stagger lee"

    its great

  • might wanna check out modern life is war's version. stagger lee.

  • MLIW's version is amazing. Seeing them play it live was one of the better moments of my life.

  • gotta love thumbs downs for having an opinion.

  • thumbs down for not agreeing with that opinon :P its better then just saying your opinions wrong at least.

  • hate to rain on your parade here but Stagger Lee was black. All the guys in these pacs are white.

  • Poetic license. None here or I would have. I had to use actors and rely on the viewers imagination. Just think black.

  • Aight, then, where is your film?

  • who are all these guys in the pictures?

  • the ppl who made the videos, cause u can see that the pictures were taken in 2006 ( there is a date in one of them)

  • The old fart with the beard is me.

  • I got this new job and my first night I looked out to the street from the back alley and all I could see was the original Stetson building, and I kinda.. remembered that's why Stagolee killed Billie D Lyon.

  • every time I turn my computer on, bam this videos instanly playn. I cant help it, its great.

  • such a great song.

  • i love this music its so chill and peaceful.

  • It cracks me up all the guitar players here that are saying how "easy" it is to play this tune this way. Why is that? Because there are only a couple chords to know? You gonna make me want to tap my toe and listen to you? You sure?

  • dude it's the music not how easy or how hard to play. listen to the music dude

  • You misunderstand me.I take it as an insult that I need tutelage from someone else about the blues too. Did you think I was a guitar player? Wrong.

  • You think deeply, you're cool

  • If you take it as an insult when a person you don't know, and who doesn't know you, makes a comment, well you have some real issues.

  • it's not insult as in "Insult" and he's not insulted by he's explaining in general about music issues get a grip bro

  • Awesome song. I love this music, simple and easy.

  • ....except for the fingerpicking.

  • ...which is not so easy. But otherwise an awesome song.

  • hahaha simple and easy SOUNDING! fun to play aswell.

  • That's sublime. Never heard this recording.

  • other songs about him. check out the spelling "stagger lee".

    RIP MJH

  • There's an old line from the Jefferson Starship song, strangely enough, that sums up over-analyzation;

" A tear in the hand of a Western man/

He'll tell you about salt, carbon, and water/ But a tear to an Oriental man/

He'll tell you about sadness and sorrow, and the love between a man and a woman"

  • It is about a hat

A Ph.D. thesis has been written on the topic.

You can find it through the usual sources

    Enjoin

  • that just about kills it now. don't think. rockout. ..or FEEL. piled higher n' deeper.

  • P: I'm not going to debate the merits (or lackthereof) of graduate studies, nor of education in general.

Nevertheless, although many dissertations are (as you said) "piled higher and deeper", to say that the exciting and innovative work contained in the study of "Stack O' Lee"/Stagger Lee is "killing the subject" is (perhaps) presumptuous.

  • Interesting and exciting intellectual work can enliven our knowledge of a topic, broaden the debate on a topic, or even create opportunities for "feeling","flowing",

    "knowing" and even, "experience".

    (End Part One)

  • Dr. Martin Luther King and Dr. Hunter S. Thompson do not represent what is implied by "piled higher and deeper". Instead, think about how it might benefit certain groups in society to create a climate of distrust of public intellectuals.

That said, thank you for your critical reply.

    G.

  • i know. just kiddin'. i'm always telling folks where a certain song came from. john-'28 sessions. awesome. peace, prof.

  • The Blues can't be analyzed accurately. Mississippi John can tell more by the way he sings an old song than any PHD dissertation ever could.

  • Was it about the hat? Billy's step-brother-in-law killed, or had killed, one of Lee Shelton's friends 4 years earlier. So, was this murder a setup for revenge? And who are all the white cowboys in the pictures. The song is about black blues mken in St. Louis, 1895.

  • Is it true that Stack-O-Lee comes from the name of the steamship stacks? I don't remember where I read it.

  • Fabulous! Thank you.

  • i shot stagolee in full color

  • maol, to answer your question: Lee Shelton, a carriage driver, who killed Billy Lyon (or DeLyon) on or about Christmas Day, 1895, in a bar in St. Louis, was nicknamed "Stack" or "Stacker" or "Stack o Lee." A common nickname along the river. Over 200 songs have been written about that murder. Was it over that Stetson hat, or was that just an excuse, hiding the longstanding feud between Shelton and Billy's family?

  • nice ballad,

  • Quite spine-tingling! "He landed in the Jefferson Pen", i.e. I just copied my KC version of Stackolee '78' to the PC. I'll upload it soon.

  • p.s. you can now see where Lonnie Donegan got his preamble and style for Rock Island Line!

  • I'm sure he had no TV behind him.. and no fax machine :p

  • Cos he did. He was years ahead of his time. He used to get faxs telling him the best banks to rob.
