Could you tell me where you got this from please? There is no discographical reference to a Sofronitsky Ballade 4 that I could find and I have never heard anyone mention one in all these years (unless my memory is playing tricks on me).
Having heard his fabulous rendition of the 3rd ballad, I had been feverishly anticipating for this 4th ballad. However, I was unprepared for this ideosyncratic interpretation which is totally incongruent to my own ideas for this piece. I don't think it's Sofronitsky playing or he may have had a bad hair day.
upon listening to his 1949 chopin concert, i can tell that is sofronitsky playing. Even on a 'out-of-tune' piano (btw which is Scriabin's piano...), his distinctive musicality prevails over bad sound.
A pianist does not make or break the piece, though he can do both. Pianists are like storytellers, and the pieces their story. If the storyteller is grand, then you'll look on the story that much more fondly, but if the storyteller is bad or just decent, you'll still like it for the elements that are always in it.
I hear he has Tupac's Murderers, Harold Holt, The Lost City of Atlantis, and all of the great writings the catholic church burned locked in his vault along with these classics.
What can be said?...every time I listen to him I have the extrange feeling that he drives me to "regions" in my soul that I didn´t even suspect before that existed....what a precious experience! Sofronitsky trascends music...
Sofronitsky! What can be said? The word 'artist' must be reserved for those very few indiviuals who can climb Parnassus and take us up there with them to breathe that rarified air. Therefore, Sofronitsky is an artist!!
To me this is a poor interpretation of Chopin's 4th Ballade... I almost can't believe it
