I think one does more or less forfeit their personal life when they run for political office (varying on the esteem of the position). It is naive for someone who's job it is to be a public representative to think they don't have to sacrifice there private life. Plus he was supposed to be doing "business" in Argentina so in this case it does have bearing on his service. Even if not, the fact that he kept his affair secret is what matters. Transparency is needed for democracy to function.

As for Sanford's obligations, if there was a clear distinction between Sanford's private and public life then lack of transparency in one realm wouldn't necessarily leech into the other. However, as a public official, there exist no clear distinctions. Acts of hiding the truth, in any way, are not behaviors we, as citizens of a republic, should be willing to let a public official do.
