Barry Sanders has a record most people don't know about...the NFL record for the most carries for negative yards, these numbers totaled 336 carries for -952 Yards. We should have been celebrating him breaking this record 2 years prior to this, because Emmit was trailing Sanders. Barry Sanders had just the opposite team stucture as Emmit Smith. Unfortunately, when the signing bonus, and such started, Barry signed his career away with the Broke Down Detroit Lions, & quit. I believe, if Emmit was playing for Lions,his record would have been average.

I'd have to say I like Barry Sanders a lot more. Payton was a powerhouse, Sanders was extremely elusive and Smith was a balance of both.

He is 5 - 7 yards up the field before he even gets first contact on his 1st down runs. Don't get me wrong, I think he was a great runner, but there is a reason very few consider him the greatest of all time at his position the way they do Jerry Rice.

@Kevthekid23 Emmit plus his outstanding linemen and team equals Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, and Broken Records. He also had enough wisdom to take care of his linemen with gifts, and such. I am teaching my boys to do the same. A Good O-Line is a RBs dream. Emmit was the most complete back, Barry Sanders was the best runner of backs, Gail Sayers would have changed the game, if he was not cut short in his career; Jim Brown & Walter Peyton, will always be the running back standard.

I still think Walter Payton is the best running back; "best", as in the best at actually ability in running the football. Emmitt Smith is the most consistent rubbing back of all-time, though. Most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons tells you that. Smith had a better offensive line than Payton did for much of his career, too. Payton was a better pure rusher.

Watching this I think of two things: Emmitt was one of the best ever at RB and Seattle has some of the worst uniforms I've ever seen. Why do teams with nice uniforms switch to horrid one? (I'm looking at you Vikings, Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals, Bills, and 1996 49ers.)

i think theres one thing that makes great runningbacks and that is the O-line! If you have an alright running back with a great offensive line the runningback will 4 to 6 yards per carry! If you have a great RBs with a weak O-line theres no holes to go through so the RBs are forced to run to the outside and not get as much yards! Ive coached Junior high and High school! O-line is where its at!

@xXjessemoog87Xx the one thing that you havent took into concideration is..emmit was tough to bring down after he broke threw the defensive line..it took on the average 3 tacklers to bring him down..John Madden made the best comparision between Emmit and Barry...he said Barry is going to get you the big run once and a while..and several negative carrys. ...Emmit always goes forward...he was a balanced back.. he could run..catch block and most important step up in a big game barry didnt

He didn't because he had signed a contract the year prior with the Lions, probably because they promised to improve the team. Barry averaged 5 yards per carry for his CAREER.
