This was the last time cowboys played good, I give mad respect for emmit for staying with us as long as he did. You are very missed e.smith. :( Im glad i had the opp to meet you train camp back in 96 ,
Emmit plus his outstanding linemen and team equals Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, and Broken Records. He also had enough wisdom to take care of his linemen with gifts, and such. I am teaching my boys to do the same. A Good O-Line is a RBs dream. Emmit was the most complete back. Barry Sanders was the best runner of backs. Gail Sayers would have changed the game, if he was not cut short in his career. Jim Brown & Walter Peyton, will always be the running back standard setters.
Barry Sanders has a record most people don't know about...the NFL record for the most carries for negative yards, these numbers totaled 336 carries for -952 Yards. Was he good yea, is he better better than Emmitt no chance. Bottom line it's all about the numbers. It's not what you know it's what you can prove. Numbers don't lie
@ADRYANSUPERMAN41-You must understand that his team sucked, and the GM & owner were dragging the team downhill. We should have been celebrating him breaking this record 2 years prior to this, because Emmit was trailing Sanders. Barry Sanders had just the opposite team stucture as Emmit Smith. Unfortunately, when the signing bonus, and such started, Barry signed his career away with the Broke Down Detroit Lions, & quit. I believe, if Emmit was playing for Lions, his record would have been average.
and dont forget Emmit held out, not once but twice and the cowboys had a shitty record with that oh SO great off... line until he showed up and was ready to play....thou not his rookie.. oh and has any one seen the Cowboy Giant game where he plays with a dislocated shoulder. He is the the meaning of ground AND POUND..!!
everyone that says emmitt smith is the best are cowboys fans everyone knows that he gets 5 yards every play before a defender even touches him. I mean he is great but not the best. Hes not better than jim brown, walter payton, barry sanders, or even maybe LT. Theres a few others who u could say are better than him
If E.Smith, the all time rushing leader played on a differnt team and did the samething. He would be concidered the best by all..!!! there R NO..!!! what if's..! J.Brown was the best, Sweetness was the best and now E.Smith is the best....let it go...American's Team Haters..
He is 5 - 7 yards up the field before he even gets first contact on his 1st down runs. Don't get me wrong, I think he was a great runner, but there is a reason very few consider him the greatest of all time at his position the way they do Jerry Rice.
@Kevthekid23 Emmit plus his outstanding linemen and team equals Super Bowls, Pro Bowls, and Broken Records. He also had enough wisdom to take care of his linemen with gifts, and such. I am teaching my boys to do the same. A Good O-Line is a RBs dream. Emmit was the most complete back, Barry Sanders was the best runner of backs, Gail Sayers would have changed the game, if he was not cut short in his career; Jim Brown & Walter Peyton, will always be the running back standard.
I still think Walter Payton is the best running back; "best", as in the best at actually ability in running the football. Emmitt Smith is the most consistent rubbing back of all-time, though. Most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons tells you that. Smith had a better offensive line than Payton did for much of his career, too. Payton was a better pure rusher.
Watching this I think of two things: Emmitt was one of the best ever at RB and Seattle has some of the worst uniforms I've ever seen. Why do teams with nice uniforms switch to horrid one? (I'm looking at you Vikings, Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals, Bills, and 1996 49ers.)
i think theres one thing that makes great runningbacks and that is the O-line! If you have an alright running back with a great offensive line the runningback will 4 to 6 yards per carry! If you have a great RBs with a weak O-line theres no holes to go through so the RBs are forced to run to the outside and not get as much yards! Ive coached Junior high and High school! O-line is where its at!
Julianirby. Dude if u ever heard emmitt talking about breaking the rushing record, he said if not for barry sanders......i would not have the record. Look it up. Barry is the man when running the ball.
@xXjessemoog87Xx does Sanders have the all time rushing title? nope...wooda shoulda couldda....bottom line is Sanders got his play off chance and choked 14 carrys for -7 yards..Emmit always took it to a higher level in the big games..barry didnt..thats why Emmit has 4 rushing titles 3 rings and the all time rushing tittle..oh and the first 2 years he ran the cowboys had a terrible line..and he won his first title 2nd year
@RJF1966 Emmit was great, but he had one of the best o lines. Barry didnt and was able to still make great plays but not all the time. Barry quit early so thats why he doesnt have the all time rushing title.
@xXjessemoog87Xx the one thing that you havent took into concideration is..emmit was tough to bring down after he broke threw the defensive line..it took on the average 3 tacklers to bring him down..John Madden made the best comparision between Emmit and Barry...he said Barry is going to get you the big run once and a while..and several negative carrys. ...Emmit always goes forward...he was a balanced back.. he could run..catch block and most important step up in a big game barry didnt
@RJF1966 I forgot who it was if it was Madden or not. I t was somebody big in the football business who said it took all 11 people to bring him down. he had a bad o line. if he had the cowboys o line at that time, god would that be beautiful! lol. barry could also just juke em out lol. but it would be awesome to see them on the same team. mind explosion, my friend. P.S. Barry did the best he could with a crappy team, dont forget he took them to the playoffs. he could also catch and obviously run
Shame Barry didn't play longer.... he may have been the all time leading rusher... but he quit... so sorry about his luck. Oh and Walter was THE GREATEST of all time period... Barry is a distant 3rd.
Barry Sanders does not compare. In this day in age it's all about Super Bowls and who has the most, and who has the most rings. Sorry Barry but you don't have rings or the record. So let's put this to rest once and for all.
@snakewar29 Your right about it being about the ring. But Barry still does rank in the top 10 of all time running backs. Mainly because Barry Sanders did a hell of a job with Detroit given the fact that they didn't have shit for an offensive line. But Barry Sanders still ranks as the #1 most elusive running back of all time plain and simple.
Walter Payton will always be the greatest back.. Right behind him Barry Sanders.. They had a true gift. Emitt Smith is a monster dnt get me wrong. But what he had wasbt as amazing as wut they had..
@Johnnyled1 He is not in the top 5, maybe at staying healthy, but come on. He just straight up doesn't compare to some of the most dynamic and electric threats to ever play the game. You must live in Dallas or be a Cowboys fan to even think he's top 5 or an ESPN sheep.
@luciusETRUR Dynamic? Electric? Give me a break dude, sounds like you're the one who's the ESPN sheep. Emmitt wasn't flashy but he was UNSTOPPABLE. Do you have any idea what that means? Defenses knew that he was getting the ball and were still POWERLESS to stop him. The only backs I clearly put above Emmitt are Jim Brown and Walter Payton. Maybe Earl Campbell. Case F-ing closed.
@Johnnyled1 That's pretty funny, considering he had one of the best O-Lines ever to play the game, and Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin aren't too shabby, either. What did Barry Sanders have? Please tell me a player he had around him that compares. Yet, he carried the team to heights they havent seen since he quit.
@luciusETRUR Come on now. Barry Sanders spent almost as much time running backwards and sideways, as he did running forward lol. Okay, I'm being facetious but really, Sanders, great as he was, is clearly a notch below Emmitt. Sanders is easily top 10, Smith is easily top 5.
@Johnnyled1 Based on what? Barry Sanders played with nothing, No offensive line, have you watched any Barry Sanders games? Holes were rare, while Emmitt had the benefit of holes that a truck could drive through. Scott Mitchel was the best QB he ever played with and Herman Moore the best wideout. Lions had nothing but Barry, and yet he still had a 2,000-yard season and could have easily locked the rushing record in eternity.
@luciusETRUR Emmitt Smith was a beast, and arguably the greatest cutback runner the game has ever seen. Barry Sanders was a juke-back, great yes, but not in Emmitt's league as far as wearing down a defense, eating up clock and just flat-out dominance. I'm sorry you're a long-suffering Lion's fan, I really am, but you need to just face facts. Emmitt is not the NFL's all-time leading rusher for nothing.
@Johnnyled1 I'm not saying Smith wasn't a great back, first of all. Second, he was an all-time rusher because Barry Sanders retired due to the fact that the Lions wouldn't get better or trade him. He said this in his book, he didn't want to play just to hold the rushing record, he wanted to win. I'm not a Lions fan, I'm just a realist. You're a Cowboys homer obviously. The fact Barry is even considered, makes him the greatest. Look at who he played for, thanks.
@luciusETRUR Ok first of all you make no sense at all...saying Emmitt was an all time leading rusher because The lions didnt get better or trade him is retarded. If barry was that massive, he wouldve gotten the record.barry was fucking crazy at speed and being unpredictable but emmitt had POWER. Enough so that even when he had back ups as blockers he would make the play his own. barry was elusive but also finnesse. Emmit was just the right balance of the perfect running back.hence, all time rusher
@1porcupinetree All Barry had to was play ONE season and he would've made it unreachable for Emmitt. He didn't because he had signed a contract the year prior with the Lions, probably because they promised to improve the team. Nothing changed, and he lost his heart to play the game because of the constant losing mentality in Detroit that wasn't eliminated until last year... use your head. Barry averaged 5 yards per carry for his CAREER.
So the top running backs look like this: The flashiest: Walter Payton. The Most Elusive: Barry Sanders, The Best Athlete To Ever Play The Game (A.K.A Most Powerful combined with unnatural speed (40 yrd dash was 4.12)): Bo Jackson. The Original Greatest Running Back: Jim Brown. The Most Consistent: Emmitt Smith.
In my opinion, what set Emmitt apart from the other great running backs was his consistency. He may not have been the fastest, the most powerful, the flashiest, the most elusive, but yet he's the the leagues all-time leading rusher for one reason, and one reason only: He was the most consistent.
@dalx21 Actually he may very well be the strongest, the fastest and the most creative, It's just that people notice his consistency and he made the game look easy.
Not bad for a man the"experts" said was too small and too slow to play in the NFL. Emmitt is a class act and he played the game the right way...with heart, determination and team pride!
