  • The word you were looking for a few times was "noir".

  • if you don't mind me saying but what is the song that plays in the intro?

  • I wouldn't consider the fact that the plot is complex and requires attention to be paid as a negative.

  • I saw this movie 12 years ago (when i was 20) at a theater in Greece. The similarities with "The Matrix" are because of the common central issue (The allegory of the cave of Plato).People who live in a lie ignoring the true world behind the false one.It might be heared as a joke but the movie "Dogtooth"(by George Lanthimos) is another movie related in a way with the allegory of the cave.Proyas (Dark City) and Lanthimos (Dogtooth) are both Greek directors (coincident???)

  • This and Alien are my favorite Sci-fi movies. Storyline, visuals, athmosphere ,acting, is close to immaculate in my opinion. William Hurt is great in this, but then I think the ensemble of actors as a whole was chosen perfectly.

  • Did anyone else find the acting bad?

  • Very, very, very good movie.

  • @hisnameisfrankie with very shitty shitty shitty acting.

  • Nice review by the way. Though the movie wasnt scary like i said, it was creepy and im pretty sure it gave me a nightmare last night lol.

  • Wasnt even scary saw it for the first time last night, those pin head fucks minus the pins were really dull and boring to me. The story line was interesting though, it was an interesting parallel world and it kept me watching till the end just so i could find out why this dude woke up randomly in a hotel room.

  • I think the biggest thing that hurt this film in theaters is that they didn't know how to market it. They had a beautiful, innovative and intriguing film. These days it would be Taylor Made for a viral marketing campaign. They marketed it more like a horror movie, which it is not.

That and the masses have poor taste, in general. That's the main reason that good things come to a premature end and garbage saturates the market.

  • @JunmaiShu

Most agree, do you think Dark City is art while Matrix is food for the masses?

  • I think that's kind of accurate, but I don't want to hate on The Matrix because I enjoyed that too. I do consider Dark City a superior film though. For The Matrix they spruced things up, added eye candy and a famous star (Keanu)... things to increase the likelihood of it selling. Whereas with Dark City I think Proyas wanted to make a great film, period, and didn't want Murdoch's character dominated by a famous personality.

  • To elaborate on that, for films like this I think it's important that the audience doesn't have any pre-conceived notions about a character like Murdoch going into things. If Keanu had played the character instead, when he lost his memory people would be like "eh, I know who he is, he's Keanu... aka Bill&Ted, ect...". But most people didn't know who Rufus Sewell was. So it's like you're going through the journey of learning about him as he finds himself. It makes it more immersive.

  • @Johnlindsey289 I really love both Dark City and the Matrix movies. I love that they both have so many layers. I would agree that Dark City was overlooked and was thus less commercially successful because it had less bells and whistles. This movie remains one of my favorite, not only because of the story but because of the atmosphere. It is destined to be a cult classic, but if that puts it in the company of Blade Runner and such films, that's not a bad place to be.

  • @Johnlindsey289

I agree. Dark City is without doubt the FAR superior film.

  • i just watched it again today after many years. Great film. It looks liek, Dark City is going to influence Chris Nolan's Inception(which i cant wait for).

  • Coolest noir sci-fi film ever, in my opinion. This review is excellent.

  • Nice job. He's right about the look coming from Tim Burton's Batman, and Burton got it from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

Everyone was great in this but Richard OBrien's Mr Hand stole it, yes?

  • Saw this when I was 10, thoght it was great.

  • Right on review. Could have shared some thoughts on the actors. I loved this film too.

  • It 's one of my favorite sci fi movie I like Matrix too but Dark City is such superior .

  • Bladerunner, 12 Monkey, The Matrix, A Clockwork Orange, Brazil and Dark City are unquestionably in my top 10.

  • some movie's are made to share information via them to the ones who are smart enough to understand that message of information. otherwise its just a story. we are shown things by a certain group who find it interesting to notify us and then get great satisfaction when we don't act on it and fall on our faces,

and of course, not all of you will understand a word of what iv just written. but then they ones who do understand will clearly know what im saying.

  • So the people who are most in need of this education wont understand and the people who know what you are saying already know this. Basicly you wasted your time writing that comment.

  • well we live in hope that they will mate, you a clearly one of the few who know and are smart enough to crack the code that i set, so for that i tip my hat to you, my time was not wasted as it has served its purpose in a few ways that iv set out, happy days, "P"

  • lol, code...

  • @TheValeterUK What you just said is bloody obvious, you are basically stating that some movies are made for deep thinkers who looks for deep symbolism in a motion picture but that doesn't make your sentence deep...

  • This movie rocks...I watched it for the first time few days back and picked up the blu ray the next day for my own collection. Before Matrix there was 'Dark City'.

  • And Dark City is far better!

  • im dying to know what that intro song is.

please reply an answer on my channel.

  • Dark City is one of the best SciFi movies of the last 25 years.

  • 4pples, just because someones OPINIONS differ from yours does not make them retarded, mind yourself.

  • it's one of my favorite movies... if you only remotely liked the philosphical aspects or at the very least the action or suspense in Matrix... than you totally gonna love this movie since it is so much better than matrix.

Be sure to get the director's cut of it... you can sometimes even find it on YouTube.

  • I cant take this kid seriously

  • Cool review bud, I was a huge fan of the original cut of Dark City, and I always thought it felt like a couple of episodes the classic Twilight Zone, in that it had a twist in the tale.

Such a shame that it died at the box office, plus Dark City came out several years before The Matrix.

  • Sad.

I bought the soundtrack to Dark City because of a single track I heard and liked, then I listened to the whole thing and loved it, and I've been meaning to get this film ever since, and now I want to see it more!

  • whats the name of the intro song

  • Fantastic review, very articulate and unbiased.

  • awesooooooooooome review mate... keep it up

  • good review I'm going to buy it now

  • Awesome review only I think it was so good it earned a 10.

  • agreed. The overall tone, and especially the character development being totally synthesized with pacing puts both the schlock horror(scream) and the schlock thriller(panic room) genre to shame in terms of not only "sucks you in" but also that everything is one coherent piece. The performances too, especially rufus sewell as Murdock, are just amazing, that is what really puts it over the top.

    Nothing feels predictable or contrived.

Also, shout out to kiefer sutherland for his best role ever.

  • Good review, although you don't seem too confident.

  • Cut him some slack, he's doing the best job I've seen in ametuer movie reviewing for his age.

  • I said it was a good review T_T

  • dood totally, the strangers are like the agents in matrix aha

    good review

i thought the same exact ideas

the first batman atmosphere, like a great thesis that keeps your interest, and it kept me on the tip of my couch.

AND DID YOU KNOW, that the little stranger boy with the knife

was ALSO the kid with the spoon in the matrix

so both movies were mutual i guess

    more respect towards dark city

love the movie, just rented it

  • either you like it or you don't like it

  • NOT a BAD review, KEEP IT up kid!

  • nice review, you're actually better than other wanna-be youtube film critics.

  • is it hard reading off a card?

  • Your review was very informative...thanks for posting it.

  • Whats your next review???

  • I would have never guessed.
