Moonshoes got the "idea." I was thinking the same thing. The reason why JD was so upset at "him" dying -- it wasn't the old guy. It was Ben. With any other patient, JD wouldn't have been so crushed and Cox wouldn't have had a total meltdown. This episode was like the Sixth Sense. You have to watch it more than once.

You can tell Ben is already dead as he says in part 1 that he will be taking picture till the day he dies, but in this part his camera is gone and only doctor Cox is speaking to him

There's a very easy way to see when the Ben you see isn't the real one anymore. The real Ben claims himself that he'll carry his camera around til the day he dies. 2:25 is the very first time in this episode that you see him without his camera and he even picks his shirt to make the audience notice somethings missing. Meaning he's already dead at that point.

I think everyone is misunderstanding it. The old guy didn't die, thats the point. You're supposed to think he died but it was actually Ben. Thats why Ben now only talks to dr Cox, because he is the only one who can see him. He also no longer carries his camera - "until the day I die."

this was the first time id seen this episode. just finished the 3rd part but obviously had to see this again! ben was following JD when JD was pushing the wheelchair. Now i see why. Why else would ben go with JD.Theyre not friends.

what I haven't been able to figure out is Cox runs out to bail out a dude while Ben was fine then all of a sudden he croaks. Sounds like Perry was out no more than 45 minutes. How could Ben go from totally healthy to dead in that time frame?

Yes that's right, Ben did die, as we see in the next part, and after JD announces the news to Dr Cox, the Ben we see in the rest of the scenes up until the funeral is from Dr Cox's subconscious, as he feels guilty.

Mostly due to having to bail out the DUI guy, therefore not being with Ben at the hospital, and he also blames JD for leaving him in charge,

even though Ben had leukaemia and there wasn't a lot either of them could do.

It's a sad episode, but also one of my favourites.
