@TheEricCartman85 beats has good bass but overall it's not a verry refined sound, especially for it's crazy price. this one is half the price and sounds twice as good, it just dosent have dr's name on it and the crazy price that brings
Something that sounds good in 2006 sounds good in 2011. It needs to play music well and it does. No need for 10 extra functions. I bought it for €220 and haven't heard anything in that price range that comes close. It sounds way better that Bose Sounddock portable, much cleaner and natural. Only minor flaw: it needs 8 d batteries and doesn't charge them, so you need to het them charged in a seperate battery charger. Otherwise I absolutely love it.
Please see my response prior to this one. What this guy is wrong about - the remote has hidden functions that allows access to all iPod/iPhone menus including playlists. And there is smart eq built in that allows you to play it at full volume without distortion, if you're stupid enough to want to do that. And he totally misses one great feature - it works and sounds great on batteries as well.
Completely misleading review, wrong on so many counts. You're not going to match the sound quality of this device for anywhere close to this price, and the new mk II ($349) does charge the iPhone, which seems to be this guy's most desired feature in a music system. And here's the fun part - install AirFoil on your Mac and AirFoil Speakers on your iPhone, dock it and stream music wirelessly via WiFi from iTunes or any other app on your computer. This guy needs to stick to reviewing chargers.
yea it's starting to get old but it still sounds WAY better than any ipod dock you'll find up to $500 seriously... the bass, there's no comparison to other ipod docks, like the bass sounds as good as a live concert... you really feel like you're in a live concert when you listen to this
@Chrisern33 i don't listen to a lot of that music but i assume the "bass drive" station on iTunes is the basically the same thing?? It sounds amazing, even with lots of bass all at once. i don't know anything about speakers but it rarely ever gets distorted when lots of different frequencies are playing at the same time; only sometimes do i get some vibrations from the speaker housing but that doesn't happen with 90% of the music i play on it. any bassy music on this will sound amazing trust me
I'm leaning towards the Altec Lansing IMT800 because the Altec has FM reception, better bass and is louder. I think the Harmon sounds a little bit crisper at lower levels though.
poor review.....you really lack fundamental knowledge about sound.....if you want features get a computer......last time I checked, my i-pod doesnt have a tuner either...95dB isnt loud enough?......its a portable....fundamentally nothing sound better in this price range...want good sound?....you wont do better for the price...period!
@isiefer You are wrong on many points: 1) Many $300 sound systems do offer tuners 2) Most $300 systems also offer the ability to use current iPod/iPhone devices. 3) Any sound dock costing $300 should be able to push 104 dB before distorting, it's just a matter of driver quality.
Clearly you haven't watched any of Nick's other audio related reviews because coincidentally, he was a professional audio engineer for many years.
My reference is to the fact that I-pods don't have FM tuners and 95% of the people shopping for docks aren't looking for one. Being a sound engineer does not reward you with having good ears, its a certificate. My customers are looking for a device that sounds good and plays the music stored on their I-pods. I would suggest that you go listen to the device. It is not designed to play at high volumes but plays at moderate volume with sound quality that rivals anything in its class. Fundamentals!
I was on the hunt for a iPod/iPhone sound dock/boom box and I tested the Harman Kardon next to the Altec Lansing MIX.. the Altec sells for much cheaper ($199) and has a FAR better sound. It has much better bass and the clarity at higher volumes was drastically better.
How can you tell the difference between version 1 and 2?

95 db is pretty loud... a metallica concert sitting next to the mixing desk is 120db.

@snapascrew db is a logaritmic scale so it's quite some diffrence..

@skidgalning obviously! but 95 dB still is loud!
