  • This is the reason why I cannot do the Rosetta Stone approach, i feel hopeless and impatient and stupid.

  • I think it is good to hear the target from the very beginning for instance when you are doing homework you play something in the background, I believe this is good to develop ears but having the teacher speaking the target language in the 1st class, oh man, the teacher's showing off not teaching.

  • @Mecklybver I totally agree. I would always recommend listening to the language even if you don't have a strong foundation. It becomes a problem though if the instructors speak with a total beginner in the targeted language.

  • Every student in Brazil is required to study English in school.

  • @LearningFrenchNow being required to study doesnt mean they actually learn the language... im sure everyone in almost every country is required to learn english...

  • You said if you look at the percentages...which ones are you referring to? Also, you mentioned that the key is motivation and that the key to motivation is students seeing progress. As they move up the level system is it not hard to see/ show progress? Beginners see everything new as self evident progress. Intermediate and advanced students get stuck at their level and feel like they're 'always repeating the same thing' but not making progress. They plateau. How do you handle them?

  • @TheLinguaHacks When I mentioned percentages, I just sort of made that up looking when I was trying to look at the whole picture when it comes to learning languages at an institution in general. You will find that there are more students dropping out of classes more than those who would stay. You're right about the plateau thing, once you get to a higher level, it starts to become difficult to actually see your progression. In this video though, I'm mainly referring to beginning students-

  • @laoshu505000 **I just sort of made that up when I was trying**

  • @TheLinguaHacks students who are just starting off without prior experience learning languages. The goal is to get the beginning student past that beginners point and by doing that, the student must be motivated. Now, how would this beginning student stay motivated at the beginning stages? By seeing progress. As you mentioned, beginners see everything new as self evident progress and that's what we want for the learner. If we're not helping the student to see his/her progress through effective-

  • @TheLinguaHacks methodology/technique then that student won't have a chance to come to the point of plateau because he/she will have given up at the beginning. Thanks for viewing and commenting!

  • Moses, you're right. I just love it when people who have no idea come to me and tell me how to teach. People tell me that immersion is the best method, even certain students say it, but immersion would only serve to frustrate the American learner, especially high school students. Kids drop my class when they find out I am a demanding teacher. I am certain that many more would drop right off the bat if I started out speaking the foreign language. That is the mentality of many here.

  • @Iceland1944 Hello Robert, immersion may work for some students, but for many other students, it can be frustrating if they don't have a solid foundation in whatever language is being learned. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

  • Aqui no Brazil um curso de inglês dura 10 anos e o aluno é incapaz de falar qualquer coisa.

Eu estudo idiomas e em 1 ano aprendi inglês .

  • I am teaching myself French, Spanish and German using the 'French in Action', 'Destinos', and 'Fokus Deutsch' television language learning programmes. They all teach using the total immersion technique, which I find very helpful.

You should look up the ALG method on Youtube. These videos explain how they get people to native levels in the Thai language going from complete beginner to native level. I find vocabulary lists boring and as for studying grammar forget it.

  • Here in Brazil we have tones of english private school and they are completly suck! (as you can see i´ve been studying english for more than four years and my english still sucks!). They are good for tooking your money up (it´s pretty expensive). Well, but if you think here in Brazil more than 20% of the population continues in the analphabetism...Well, just to get the chance to study english it´s a great oportunity.

  • Your lack of effort sucks, not the schools.

  • @Belson476 That's true, but if you don't have the motivation to do it, you won't put forth the effort.

  • I agree. Languages need to be taught to students strengths and not just with static rules.

  • Ich denk du hast recht!

  • make stuff real

  • GREAT video, you make it stuff real.

  • i like that bruce lee poster :D
