Republicans do the same thing only their audience is borderline mental so they smear in a way that their audience can understand and in a way that makes it look like their policies are better when they barely talk about issues to begin!!
Because we are a free country with free men and women. We dont need the government to do anything for us. Take a look at the history of this great nation and what made us a superpower. The spirit of the individual is what made us great, not everybody depending on government programs. Stop thinking of what feels good and really do some thinking. How can we pay for this. Do you know how much money we borrow for the programs we already have. More govt programs, more taxes. More taxes less freedom.
You're right. We don't need the police, fire department, and public schools that are all funded by the government. I think we should all start a rag tag police force a fight crime in Compton. Hopefully we won't get shot.
What made America a Superpower was the same thing that made Britain, Rome, Greece, and Persia before it great. Imperialism. When America was at the height of its glory, its empire was expansive, now not so much.
I've got health problems myself and have to deal with insurance companies and doctors offices all the time. I am not wealthy. I would be much better off with free healthcare, these insurance companies rob me blind. I can barely afford to live because my insurance is so expensive. No exaggeration. The only people who support the insurance companies and leaving things the way they are are A. politicians with kickbacks or B. people who haven't had to live it.
What's more is, we need a revolution in preventative medicine. If the public option goes through, they should give tax benefits to people who can prove they exercise regularly and eat right. They should also give people coupons/stamps to buy condoms so that people who engage in this free fun will at least do it with free protection. And pass out condoms to students in public schools on demand! HIV is still a major problem in america!
Health care absolutely needs to be universal. Public health is not a "oh, it's their problem if they can't afford it" issue. If a large enough portion of the population isn't covered in a competent manner, then sickness and disease will spread, and all your money and your fancy cars and fancy houses wont mean a damn thing. Civilization crumbles when the working class can't pay for medicine.

This is why democracy doesn't work. The people are stupid. The congress is nothing more than an ATM for money whores. And both these groups hinder a weak presidency.
Ill take a hardliner with some good ideas anyday over the current worthless system.
someone said GM offers(ed) excellent hcc and most ppl werent lucky enuf to work for GM. It's true and sad and just consider this also. Major companies are almost all government subsidized to some level by government. The general taxpayer pays into that pool of money, which gets funneled to the top strata of corps to pay for their 'excellent hcc'. Secret truth is americans do pay into hcc, for other americans. Time to change things people. Really change.
Capng123 hit the nail on the head already - the Canadian healthcare system has its major faults, but most Canadians would revolt at the idea of going American style coverage over their provincial Medicare card.
It's all best described by Michael Moore's movie Sicko.
Americans should shut the fuck up about Canada's Health care system already. You don't understand it, you generalize and your information is generally wrong.
Is it a perfect system? No. Show me a perfect system and I'll be impressed. Even with it's problems I'd still rather have our system than yours.
Meanwhile if you can't get your facts straight, then keep your opinions to yourself.
Go live in Canada or Great Brittian, see if any one there is happy with government controlled health care
At leat now you get treated.
In Canada a young woman is dying of cervical cancer because the odds are that a woman that young won't get cancer, the government won't even test for the disease until a female gets to a certain age. Now she dying, because their health care is in the government hands.
Yes, because there are no horror stories like this in America's perfect and flawless medical system (IF this story is even true, which I highly doubt).
I live in the UK and can honestly say our healthcare is far superior to the US system.
There would be outcry at even the thought of abolishing national healthcare in the UK, as a civilised society we expect the most vulnerable members of our society to be cared for.
You may not care about people less fortunate but I'm glad to say my country looks after its own.
You hit the point right on...I hope this country starts acting more like yours...I just wish we didnt have right wing nuts like donottake standing in our way.
HA HA HA!!! Come on! You know I am not acting like that guy in the Holocaust museum.
They are standing in our way- and what I mean by that is that they have too many right wing wing nuts(including blue dog corporate dems) in congress who have been blocking progressive policies for a very long time...if we can just bring the the other 50% of voters woh don't vote to the polls we may be able to get their crazy leaders out of power.
The reason they are standing in your way is because most of the country is NOT PROGRESSIVE! Dont let the Bush years fool you, America is still a Center Right country.
I wont argue with you about your views on social programs-we wont agree, so I wont go there...
But opinion poll after opinion poll show that the country does favor more progressive policies its just that:
A.1/2 the country doesnt vote.
B.The media gives those positions little attention because they harm the elite.
C.And the issues that most the country IS right-center on-like gay marrigage, often take the front seat over important ones (becuase us Americans are typically stupid).
They need to be careful not to allow the government to take over the health care system. The government does not run anything well, it will end up being expensive and the services will be lousy. The government has problems just running the post office.
it's already very expensive (per capita americans pay twice as much as the second most expensive healthcare in the world, think about it!) with very poor results
and of course the government already runs most of it (medicare)
The government can run private health care out of business since the government can lose money and still stay in business. Companies offer excellent health care plans and anyone working there can get covered for the same price regardless of existing conditions. Companies may end up dropping their plans and forcing people to buy the government plan. Eventually the government will run it and screw it up like England.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Companies offer good health care plans as benefits. A lot of the companies pay the entire cost and if you want a lower deductible then you pay for that out of your pocket.
The problem is for individuals who work for small companies who don't offer the benefits and people who are unemployed.
An individual having to buy health insurance gets ripped. It is expensive and the plan is not as good as what a company can negotiate with a pool of employees.
And if someone has existing conditions they will raise the cost even higher or may refuse to cover them. They need to find a way to pool people together who don't have it so they can get it at a reasonable rate and not get turned down. They need to be careful not to eventually allow the government to take the system over then everyone will get lousy service and will pay for it through taxes.
I agree with this, you see it exactly right... Companies like GM:) provide excellent healthcare. The majority of the people are not "lucky" enough to work for them tho. Especially small businesses can't compete, it hurts workforce mobility and the whole economy tremendously!
there's a difference between service providers and insurers. the government wants to run an insurer, not hospitals.
emm??? As someone who lives in the UK I can guarantee the National healthcare system is one of the best in the world, it beats America every time. Ignoring the tax I pay on my pay check I dont pay any money for any treatment- its all free including prescriptions, tests etc.
I have peace of mind that no matter what happens health wise my compatriots will care for me in a time of need.
NHS has worked for over 50 years and will continue to do so.
who are you? are you from the U.K. ? your fulll of shit? you don't know anything. If your not rich an live in the US. you get fucked by the healthcare system in the US.
We have short waiting lists, healthcare is free at point of use, across the board our healthcare outperforms American healthcare.
I have several friends who have been taken into hospital and received treatment almost straight away.
I can really think of any way our system isnt better than the American system- most developed countries have national healthcare, America is the only developed country with a shitty health system.
We have wait lists that a lot of people experience. The thing is, these people are non-critical cases waiting to get a band-aid or a couple stitches. If anyone in our country gets sick, we don't ask any questions. We just treat them. In the US, if you don't have ID, they'll let you die. If they don't let you die, they'll then find out who you are and charge your ass with a half-million dollar hospital bill. I can't see how anyone would want that over universal care.
Well I disagree with one fundamental thing you say. Now I am all for single payer, it makes much more sense and costs a hell lot less for everyone, and works around the world. But unfortunately the single payer option will mess with the economy. Single payer eliminates the private healthcare industry, in one fell swoop. That cannot be good for the economy. They hold too much clout, and what's going on would only weaken the insurance companies. This is actually necessary to remove clout.
Is what Obama's doing weak? Yes, but to a certain extent it is necessary. Rates will go up, that is only natural, but after a while the private insurance companies will be weak enough to wipe out while nobody would notice.
So? We lose some health care insurance jobs. Guess what - health care is a huge monkey on the back of American businesses. When GM is planning to move factories, not to some third-world shithole, but to Canada, strictly because of the health care overhead, it's pretty obvious that we're losing jobs to our current health care model. I'll trade some flunked out doctor who rubber-stamps denials of medical claims for a handful of actual American workers.
I'm not talking about jobs, jobs aren't important here. I'm talking about political and economic clout. The problem right now in America is that you are "this close" to a bunch of angry republicans and libertarians from going crazy and boycotting everything (Or as we like to call it, fucking us over).
All I'm arguing is that the slow progress in this is not going to deliver as much of a shock to your butthurt and whiny citizens. That is all.
"Single payer eliminates the private healthcare industry, in one fell swoop."
Yeah, you said it, as when you eliminate the private healthcare industry, that necessarily implies jobs - or did you think otherwise?
But keep in mind - you're not eliminating the entire health care industry - I'm pretty sure that doctors still get paid in Canada. You're just eliminating the leaches that sit between the patient and provider, sucking the blood from both ends - and that's fat we can afford to lose.
Of course, but again the insurance companies are powerful. Cutting out that fat will essentially be stapling your stomach shut. It's like what Pierre Elliot Trudeau did when he got rid of the gold standard. There was a shock to the system.
I'm just saying I get what Obama is doing by creating a cooldown period before shutting it down. I don't necessarily want him to, but I get it.
Wake up people! Obama wouldn't do shit. He already have sold us as slaves to his Wall st. masters. Listen to Peter Schiff, Jim Rogers, Alex Jones. etc Audit The Fed - it'll destroy it!!
I just called my Rep. and senators and told them that I want the public policy option. One of my senator's inboxes was full but ill try again in a few days.
If we do get a public option, it will be so watered down that nobody will use it and then the corporate Dems and Repubs can say "See? We told you that a public option would be disastrous! Government run health care doesn't work!" And then the price gouging will continue for another 50 years.
If Harry Reid had any balls (which he doesn't), he'd get 50+ votes for a strong, robust public option and let the bill be filibustered until Nelson, Bayh, Baucus, Conrad, etc. vote for cloture.
Maher was totally right and I'm glad he called Obama out on his shit. Bush barely won in 2004, and he set to work doing everything he wanted. Obama won by far more, and he's bowing to the right. Fuck bi-partisanship, shove Healthcare reform down their greedy fucking throats.
God dammit. How or why the fuck can our elected officials fuck this up on purpose! WHY? WHY! Do they not give a fuck about people. Do they not care about Americans? Or do they only care about the Americans who run medical insurance? I can't even comprehend how helping ALL Americans get REAL healthcare is wrong. How can helping Americans live healthy lives where they are able to see a doctor and get medicine with out being rich, then how the fuck can you call your self a public servant?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Democrats do not lack the balls. On the contrary, they have HUUUUGE balls. So huge that they're in on the scam. What? You expected change??? HAHAHAHA! Oh you naive lot of fools. Carlin had a point. Why vote if the options are the same anyway?
This trips me out...Obama is spending our tax dollars escalating Bush's wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.... he even has went as far as to bomb the shit out of innocent people in Pakistan.... and here everyone is bitching about him not folowing through on a mediocure healthcare bill...what a country we live in...
Budget reconciliation is the only way that a public option will be passed, and even then it'll be dead after 5 years. The "health care reform" bill is going to be a complete joke and big pharma and big insurance will be dancing in the streets and the corporate Dems and Repubs will be cashing in the paychecks they receive from the lobbyists. It's really a shame too because the chance of real health care reform won't be possible for another 15 years or so.

He will fail on this because Healthcare reform does not work in this country. He is destined to be a 1 term EPIC FAIL and will get PWNED by Sarah Palin in 2012. She will be a 2 term EPIC SUCCESS.
Obama really does have to push this. All the people that support him are pushing for this.If he just does some shitty private reform that shit won't fly.
I'm a huge Obama supporter but if he doesn't deliver on healthcare I'm washing my hands of him. I didn't elect him to get a republican. His healthcare proposal was a major part of beginning to balance the budget and gettingus out the recession. I donated to his campaign voted for change. He will fail without this public option and I will be very dissapointed. Please Obama, don't mess this up.

He won't deliver because he is destined to be a 1 term EPIC FAIL and will lose badly to Sarah Palin. Palin will be a 2 term EPIC SUCCESS greater than Dubya, Clinton, Reagan, and all male POTUS before her.
if Obamba does not fix health care by Dec. 31st of 2009 then he is a worthless piece of shit and must immediately resign. if he refuses to leave in disgrace then impeach him and remove him by force. we don't need this liar in the White House.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Obambi's attempt to reform health care will lead to his inevitable and humiliating defeat in 2012 to Sarah Palin. When Palin becomes POTUS, she will ensure that healthcare becomes completely privatized and ensure that the health insurance companies completely benefit from Palin's stances. Public healthcare and reform does not work in this country.
You say republicans are bought and payed for by the health care industry... I say the democrats are too. Why do you think they're so "spineless"? Money has more value than values for most people in Washington.
We need to reform the way Congressmen can take "donations"... I say corporate bundling should be illegal, for starters.
Okay, I have to admit, I am a Canadian nurse. As Cenk would say about the Public Option--is it a good thing--OF COURSE!! The reason I Ieft the sunshine coast, is healthy and working, I could not afford health insurance. Here in Canada, if I trip on my way home from work and break a leg--I get taken to a hospital in an ambulance, and get fixed at no cost to me!!!!! If a street person breaks his leg--same thing. This is a beginning option for you guys down there. One small step.
I hate politicians that are fucking corrupt. Most of the government in every country is if not all. I am hoping to god that Obama is not one of those politicians.
Damn, that sucks... I'm from Texas... sorry Cenk, I got nothing I can do.
On the bright side, Bill White, the Democratic mayor from Houston is running for the Senate in 2010, and honestly, I think he has a fantastic shot at it.
Universal health insurance would work but too many politicians have their pockets filled by big insurance . I think most conservatives have this superiority complex , they feel as if you don't have health ins. or your poor too bad go die. No compassion for their fellow man. Though they did have no problems giving Iraqis billions that had NO strings attached .
Why the hell does this have so little views!?

someone said GM offers(ed) excellent hcc and most ppl werent lucky enuf to work for GM. Really change.
dubbleplusgood 2 years ago
Capng123 hit the nail on the head already - the Canadian healthcare system has its major faults, but most Canadians would revolt at the idea of going American style coverage over their provincial Medicare card.
It's all best described by Michael Moore's movie Sicko.
dubbleplusgood 2 years ago 3
Man... there would be blood on the fucking streets.
Capng123 2 years ago
Americans should shut the fuck up about Canada's Health care system already. You don't understand it, you generalize and your information is generally wrong.
Is it a perfect system? No. Show me a perfect system and I'll be impressed. Even with it's problems I'd still rather have our system than yours.
Meanwhile if you can't get your facts straight, then keep your opinions to yourself.
Capng123 2 years ago 3
Go live in Canada or Great Brittian, see if any one there is happy with government controlled health care
At leat now you get treated.
In Canada a young woman is dying of cervical cancer because the odds are that a woman that young won't get cancer, the government won't even test for the disease until a female gets to a certain age. Now she dying, because their health care is in the government hands.
jenisoutofhermind 2 years ago
Yes, because there are no horror stories like this in America's perfect and flawless medical system (IF this story is even true, which I highly doubt).
Capng123 2 years ago 3
I live in the UK and can honestly say our healthcare is far superior to the US system.
There would be outcry at even the thought of abolishing national healthcare in the UK, as a civilised society we expect the most vulnerable members of our society to be cared for.
You may not care about people less fortunate but I'm glad to say my country looks after its own.
hammy606 2 years ago 5
You hit the point right on...I hope this country starts acting more like yours...I just wish we didnt have right wing nuts like donottake standing in our way.

pillagerromanman 2 years ago
HA HA HA!!! Come on! You know I am not acting like that guy in the Holocaust museum.
They are standing in our way- and what I mean by that is that they have too many right wing wing nuts(including blue dog corporate dems) in congress who have been blocking progressive policies for a very long time...if we can just bring the the other 50% of voters woh don't vote to the polls we may be able to get their crazy leaders out of power.
kanani717 2 years ago
The reason they are standing in your way is because most of the country is NOT PROGRESSIVE! Dont let the Bush years fool you, America is still a Center Right country.
pcarlton3 2 years ago
I wont argue with you about your views on social programs-we wont agree, so I wont go there...
But opinion poll after opinion poll show that the country does favor more progressive policies its just that:
A.1/2 the country doesnt vote.
B.The media gives those positions little attention because they harm the elite.
C.And the issues that most the country IS right-center on-like gay marrigage, often take the front seat over important ones (becuase us Americans are typically stupid).

They need to be careful not to allow the government to take over the health care system. The government does not run anything well, it will end up being expensive and the services will be lousy. The government has problems just running the post office.
donottake 2 years ago
it's already very expensive (per capita americans pay twice as much as the second most expensive healthcare in the world, think about it!) with very poor results
and of course the government already runs most of it (medicare)
so what's your point...?
pinochet222 2 years ago
And medicare is going broke.
The government can run private health care out of business since the government can lose money and still stay in business. Companies offer excellent health care plans and anyone working there can get covered for the same price regardless of existing conditions. Companies may end up dropping their plans and forcing people to buy the government plan. Eventually the government will run it and screw it up like England.
donottake 2 years ago
"And medicare is going broke"
that's why a reform is necessary, too many people live without coverage and join medicare in a very poor condition (=expensive treatment)
And of course let's not forget Bush's free prescription bill.
"since the government can lose money and still stay in business"
obviously it must be embedded in the system that it shouldn't lose "too much"...
"Companies offer excellent health care"
They complain about the costs.
btw, small businesses employ half of US workers!
pinochet222 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Companies offer good health care plans as benefits. A lot of the companies pay the entire cost and if you want a lower deductible then you pay for that out of your pocket.
The problem is for individuals who work for small companies who don't offer the benefits and people who are unemployed.
An individual having to buy health insurance gets ripped. It is expensive and the plan is not as good as what a company can negotiate with a pool of employees.
donottake 2 years ago
And if someone has existing conditions they will raise the cost even higher or may refuse to cover them. They need to find a way to pool people together who don't have it so they can get it at a reasonable rate and not get turned down. They need to be careful not to eventually allow the government to take the system over then everyone will get lousy service and will pay for it through taxes.
donottake 2 years ago
I agree with this, you see it exactly right... Companies like GM:) provide excellent healthcare. The majority of the people are not "lucky" enough to work for them tho. Especially small businesses can't compete, it hurts workforce mobility and the whole economy tremendously!
there's a difference between service providers and insurers. the government wants to run an insurer, not hospitals.
pinochet222 2 years ago 2
"screw it up like England"

Why would anyone think our system "sucks"?
We have short waiting lists, healthcare is free at point of use, across the board our healthcare outperforms American healthcare.
I have several friends who have been taken into hospital and received treatment almost straight away.
I can really think of any way our system isnt better than the American system- most developed countries have national healthcare, America is the only developed country with a shitty health system.
hammy606 2 years ago 3
We have wait lists that a lot of people experience. The thing is, these people are non-critical cases waiting to get a band-aid or a couple stitches. If anyone in our country gets sick, we don't ask any questions. We just treat them. In the US, if you don't have ID, they'll let you die. If they don't let you die, they'll then find out who you are and charge your ass with a half-million dollar hospital bill. I can't see how anyone would want that over universal care.

someperson111 2 years ago
Well I disagree with one fundamental thing you say. Now I am all for single payer, it makes much more sense and costs a hell lot less for everyone, and works around the world. But unfortunately the single payer option will mess with the economy. Single payer eliminates the private healthcare industry, in one fell swoop. That cannot be good for the economy. They hold too much clout, and what's going on would only weaken the insurance companies. This is actually necessary to remove clout.
snipzor 2 years ago
Is what Obama's doing weak? Yes, but to a certain extent it is necessary. Rates will go up, that is only natural, but after a while the private insurance companies will be weak enough to wipe out while nobody would notice.
snipzor 2 years ago
47f0 2 years ago
I'm not talking about jobs, jobs aren't important here. I'm talking about political and economic clout. The problem right now in America is that you are "this close" to a bunch of angry republicans and libertarians from going crazy and boycotting everything (Or as we like to call it, fucking us over).
All I'm arguing is that the slow progress in this is not going to deliver as much of a shock to your butthurt and whiny citizens. That is all.
snipzor 2 years ago
"Single payer eliminates the private healthcare industry, in one fell swoop."
Yeah, you said it, as when you eliminate the private healthcare industry, that necessarily implies jobs - or did you think otherwise?
But keep in mind - you're not eliminating the entire health care industry - I'm pretty sure that doctors still get paid in Canada. You're just eliminating the leaches that sit between the patient and provider, sucking the blood from both ends - and that's fat we can afford to lose.
47f0 2 years ago
Of course, but again the insurance companies are powerful. Cutting out that fat will essentially be stapling your stomach shut. It's like what Pierre Elliot Trudeau did when he got rid of the gold standard. There was a shock to the system.
I'm just saying I get what Obama is doing by creating a cooldown period before shutting it down. I don't necessarily want him to, but I get it.
