  • Are you using dynamic focus?

  • What strap is that? Where can I get one?

  • @bryonlape Black Rapid RS-7. cazillo.com/articles/37-photography/84-black-rapid-r-strap-worth-every-penny.html

  • @GregoryCazillo Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow ... thanks for sharing... Like your vids ..

  • what mic are you using?

  • @Snakekilla12 Sony lapel mic goo. gl/E0SkP

  • @gregorycazillo what version? the url shortener doesnt work.

  • @Snakekilla12 Link works fine, remove the space in between . and g.

  • Greg Cazillo?!..... Yes Sir!!.... priceless. :-) Keep up that good work! Way to go!

  • Did someone hire you to shoot the event? How do you make money off these events?

  • @GENOMCHAOS Selling photos to the riders.

  • @gregorycazillo If I did the same thing, what would be a good starting point for price?

  • @GENOMCHAOS There are too many factors to go over, its best to set your own prices to fit your job and service area.

  • very helpful to see you shoot this event.

  • Man, I love that you've made this video, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out if I should rent a lens for a skate boarding event coming up, I'm still pretty new and being able to see the distance between you and your subjects and then the corresponding shot is really helpful, that and all the other info.cheers Greg :) Oh and since I don't know what kind of vantage points I'm going to have I'm considering picking up something equivalent to the 70-200 and bringing the 17-55 kit lens

  • Interesting choice with the 50 f/1.4, I like the 70-200 photos. I'd imagine that you would normally carry both your camera bodies with different lenses so you can switch back and forth between them. I personally would have knelt down or laid on the ground to shoot the riders from low to high for a more dramatic angle. I guess it depends on what kind of look you're going for though.

  • @KittysFeet See earlier comments about a low angle. If one of my bodies wasn't shooting video, yes I would have been using both with different lenses although in that situation its impossible to switch between them and not miss a rider.

  • @LouisWhite Greg, Fantastic, i really enjoyed the video. I shot a race a few weeks back to just to practice my panning skills. You mentioned in the video making $ with this shoot, how do you market your photos? I shoot BMX races and hand out cards to riders but with this many riders how do you make it work. Thanks for the help...Big Fan....no really i'm almost 300 pounds...BIG fan :)

  • great stuff, u should invite fans to follow you on outdoor sets, what do u think?

  • @M3mPHiS I have some ideas on this...stay tuned.

  • take us to more events, love this video start to end.

  • Hi Greg! Can you tell us about the composition and the rule of thirds? And as the auto focus on the rule of thirds to less expensive cameras such as Canon 60d to the 9 focus points?

  • @MrChemify I don't understand the second question but I am sure I will do a few videos on composition.

  • @gregorycazillo I mean, that the rule on some cameras do not focus points, intersections of lines located in the third. What to do in this case?

  • @MrChemify You don't have any choice but to focus and recompose....just do so minimally and be sure to use what you have.

  • @gregorycazillo Problems arise while on Canon 1000d. I ordered 60d, I think with the situation will improve dramatically.

Thank you for your help! Interesting video!

  • @MrChemify u have a 60D and don't know about the rule of thirds O____X

  • You were so giddy when that guy recognized you.

  • 6:51 Imanabagamagadavideo to find who that was :)

  • @D0SI LMAO! xD

  • I love that you show us both good and bad photos. And you always know why you think they are good or bad. That's really key for knowing once craft and personal style. More than anything that teaches me how to think about photography, not just how to press the right buttons. Keep being excellent!

  • Oh just another question...those 7.4%...is that just the pics you shot or what both of you shot? Because altogether I believe you two were even better than that :)

  • @Wuzzysbrand06 That was the average for the entire event

  • you no what guys i just made a comment on Jared super hero video , just saying

if i wanted to take him serious just stop all this super hero crap and bring back greg.

and his response was to block me and remove me from his site,

i did not want to offend anybody i was just saying,

but anyway Greg great video and fab info as normal from you,

i wish i could say the same about the super hero guy, lol

  • @borthwick2 funnily enough, i just watched that video and halfway though I unsubscribed.. had enough of his stupid videos with very little information.

I find Greg so much more helpful and informative.

  • Good stuff... As expected

  • Great video! Looks like shooting that was a lot of fun.

  • Wow! Good Job! TY Greg, what do you use af-s or af-c?

  • @Jepraw It depends what I am shooting

  • @gregorycazillo on this event the racing, af-c? ty greg

  • @Jepraw couldn't use any other mode...yes continuous focus.

  • Nice video i want more. =-)

  • Nice Video keep up submitting the real knowledge :)

    FroDontKnowPhoto, GregKnows

  • That was a lot of fun to watch!!

  • Greg, why you didnt do some panning shoots??

  • @froschi See earlier comments, they don't sell.

  • Awesome mate, yet again!

  • Hey greg , this video is amazing... We learn a lot by watching you working!!! Thanks and keep them coming!

  • That guy Recognized you!!!! Awesome!

  • How do you make sure that people get the right photo. Do they come to you, or how does it work.

  • @denmyos See the extra info I posted on my website, link is in the description.

  • We see things and learn things with you that we would never get anywhere else... Thank you for the video! This is the next best thing to being out on a shoot with you... and Damn that Camera focuses fast!!!

  • Hey Greg!! I actually really like the wide angle shot with the whole bike in the frame! Nice work.

  • Greg, I must say you are one of my favorites.. makes me want to go shoot something right now!

  • guy at 6:38 is awesome!

  • @gregorycazillo Hey Greg, great video thanks for being so detailed with your settings and trying different lenses to find which one worked best for you! Also, I myself use AF-C, Dynamic Area AF with 9 cross focus points and it works pretty well tracking the subject. This was so far your best and more interesting and informative videos!

  • getting better all the time Greg

  • I'm glad to see more different photos, and seeing you physically take them... unlike getting random raw edits. Keep up the great vids Greg!

  • Awesome work mate, love being out on your work projects...excellent video!

  • Greg, how do you avoid "overshooting" an event?

  • @trmania Confidence in what/ how I shoot and having a game plan before the event. Plus as I said in the video don't set the camera on continuous high.

  • @gregorycazillo Thanks for the help!

  • When they're riding by you in a group, and you said you were in single point focus, who do you focus on? Or do you just set your focus point to one dot in your camera and you just put the focus point on each cyclist as they go by because I would assume you won't have time to adjust your points when they're going by that quick.

  • @5Sportfreak5 I just pick one. I know that I can't get every rider so I do my best to get the majority.

  • @gregorycazillo you may have answered this below but I don't recall. Were you asked to go to this event or did you just show up? At first I thought maybe you just showed up but after reading your blog you said you only "accepted these gigs if you were shooting solo" thanks

  • @Uscbryan949 This is the second year at this event.

  • @gregorycazillo sorry greg this type of shot that i see you do here is like the cyclist is just going slow or even stopped youv gotta go with the slow shutter speed pan blur the background

  • @jameslcr

I agree but it is probably quite difficult to get a panning shot for everyone of those 1500 cyclists.

  • @schumionbike yeah true but you would try and get a few shots at the least to cary it :D

  • @jameslcr Panning and partially blurred photos don't sell, that's why I shoot events like I do.

  • @jameslcr BTW I don't 'have' to shoot anything, this what I shoot and this time I was shooting for what sells.

  • @Uscbryan949 Sorry, yes I was asked to shhot it.

  • Another great video. Some valuable tips by simply watching you work and your explanation of some of the simplest things that I know I've read before, but now I "get-it". Thanks.

  • 70-200 is the best lens made for this type of shooting. Love mine for shooting races... Marathons, etc. Would have been cool to slow down the shutter speed and pan while using a monopod. Background motion blur is a big seller.

  • @johnthomasadams I disagree, motion blur photos never sell for me.

  • @johnthomasadams i agree cant beat a great panning shot a cyclist or car or that stopped in action just looks as if there parked nice panning shot gives the sense of motion an they do sell

  • @jameslcr Not for me.

  • Great video Greg keep up the good work.

The first location you shot at could pass off

as Australia, even down to the stop sign, road, ect

  • love love love LOVE this Greg! Thank you!

  • Again, great stuff Greg!

  • Greg, you take great event photos =)

  • Thanks for all the great content Greg! Just curious would you mind doing a vid for strobists who shoot products? I'm curious about your take on tethered shooting.

  • @EishinRyu I do it when needed, especially when shooting product.

  • @gregorycazillo Any recommendations as far as software and/or laptop setups tables etc are concerned? Would love a vid if possible. Thanks for the reply.

  • Sniper rifle gets loaded at 8:00

  • Love the behind the scenes format. Great vid.

  • Do you use the 9FPS of the D3 it looks like you were shooting in single shot?

  • @TheSupasimon I was.

  • Another QUALITY video from you. Good to see you doing so well!

  • That 70-200 is defenitely going to be my go to lens when I get it

  • Two of my favorite things to do Cycling and Photography!!!

  • Really cool, felt like I was with you at the event.

  • this is kick ass content!!!! I got a question, for sports photography like this one, should I spend my money of the lens itself of the body?

  • @TechnomTigerGeek Glass comes first.

  • Another brilliant video Greg! This and the portrait session are by far the best and I feel i'm really learning by watching them.

A couple of questions I hope you have time to answer:

    1) Even though you shot RAW, how much time did you spend editing the photos in Lightroom. Was it a case if the photo looked good to begin with then leave it alone, purely because it's not practical to edit 4500 photo's.

    2) Could you have done just as good job shooting JPEG?

  • @dstubbso Shoot jpeg? Never. I spent about 4 hours editing but it was mostly checking focus, not editing individual files.

  • @gregorycazillo So Greg, if you didn't edit the files... what benefit did you gain from shooting RAW? Surly jpeg would have been kinda on the hard disc space, also the camera would have had a larger buffer if needed. I shoot RAW for 95% of the time, but 5% of the time I think it can help shooting jpeg. Wouldn't applying the picture control to give a little contrast etc in jpeg help? or did you use a Lightroom import pre-set? (for things like contrast etc.)

  • @dstubbso I didn't edit that much for display on the web but I do edit when they are ordered. I know that I can get a better final file from RAW and jpegs have too many limitations. For example white balance...if I adjust it in a jpeg file it won't look as good as if I shot RAW.

Its the way I shoot and that won't change. You can shoot however you like, its a free country ;).

  • Hi Greg. Ever consider buying a Canon DSLR strictly for video? There are a plethora of adapters out there that let you use and autofocus with Nikon lenses. Plus, there is no doubt that Canon has better video than Nikon. It would be a huge investment, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.

  • @NguyenTaylor Nope, not gonna happen. The quality of video on the D3s is kick ass, no need to switch.

  • @gregorycazillo Just a floating thought :]

  • Greg is the MAN! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS BRO! This was fun to watch.

  • It looks if you realy were shooting people with that shutter sound :0) great vid!

  • thanks for video greg, its like having my own tutor and a really good tutor at that ,learning a lot from your videos, keep them coming thick and fast thanks greg

  • awesome greg

  • cool vid, only one observation, you should have shot from a lower angle

  • @catalin205 See earlier comments, shooting at a lower angle would have give me more sky...not what I wanted.

  • @gregorycazillo Maybe not if you keep the same tilt...more or less :)

  • @Wuzzysbrand06 Same tilt would mean too much foreground, again not what I wanted.

  • @gregorycazillo Haha ok you win :P I'm still a beginner so I always kinda try every angle possible just to see what it looks like :) These are awesome videos and it's also cool how you respond to most of the comments so we can learn things that way, too :) Keep 'em up Mr. Cazillo :)

  • @Wuzzysbrand06 As you learn photography you will be able to see the image in your head before shooting, that's when you know you are getting good ;)

  • @gregorycazillo cool

  • i thought the 14-24mm had a unique look for some of the photos. something different. but i agree, the 70-200mm looked the best! Would you say an overcast day like the one you had for these photos is better than a sunny day for shooting an event like this?

  • @Knoptop I could go either way, doesn't matter. Sun gives me more contrast and nicer shadows but it was cooler without the sun...

  • awesome video!

  • man i love your videos, keep them coming Greg, great stuff.

  • That's awesome... you're a celebrity now.

  • @Tennishead39 not yet...hoping I will!

  • Great video Greg, Love when you take us with you to work!

  • Great video, Greg. I like how you include commentary throughout your entire workflow, both while you are on the shoot and then reviewing the images in Lightroom afterward. I really appreciate the time you put into these!

  • for something like that do you use manual focus? It seems like it would be tough to select a focus point so quickly

  • @dcleve11 I use the same one for each photo. You could use manual focus if the subject was always in the same spot, although that would be almost impossible with bike riders or anyone moving at a decent pace.

  • Hey Greg, can't find your "shop" or the photos on your site. How do you handle it with sending and paying? Keep going on, great job. Kind regards from Germany ;)

  • @Amporo I use an open source photo gallery with ecommerce built in, then paypal for payments. I have generic cards with a great photo on them that direct clients to my website to purchase. The cards have a cute photo of a child and a coupon for a family portrait on them to help promote my other services.

  • How long does it usually take to process and deliver that amount of photos from event to delivery date?

  • @1rhett1 Took me about 4 hours to go through them all and delete the bad ones then about another 4 to get them uploaded to my site and ready for sale. I only applied general corrections to them like extra contrast so that didn't take long at all.

  • great video! i really like this format, it makes for a good complement to the more "teaching" videos as they show you adapating to the conditions and the lens changes, keep 'em coming!!

  • How many photos did you deliver?

  • @OceanStudiio About 4300.

  • My favorite part of the video 6:37 That was cool! I hope that rider comments on youtube or on facebook so you know who he is.

  • @PhotographersOnUTube me too ;).

  • I was sitting here wondering why you weren't using the 70-200 when at 7:32 you said you were going to switch :) Great vid Greg!

  • so interesting to watch. thank you

  • I was going to ask why you didn't motordrive at 9 fps to increase your chances of catching a great shot...but then you said there were 1500 riders. What a post processing nightmare that would be with 1500 x 9 shots each!

  • @brandonbush1 Exactly.

  • @gregorycazillo You said, it is a good chance to make money and get your name out there, so how do you make money in an event like this? Thanks Greg!

  • You needed a chair!

  • Great video Greg! You got really excited when that guy recognized you, I guess you are getting noticed more and more. Keep it up!

  • @mauri383 I wish I knew who it was!!!

  • So there isn't any need for model releases if you're doing an event like this to sel photos??

  • @nguyencs I've never used one, they are in the street in public.

  • @nguyencs By law you don't need a model release if photographing in public area. If they don't want to be photographed they have to get off the public property. That's how Paparazzi make a living but they get way too aggressive. If someone came up to me and ask me to delete it, I probably would but so far it hasn't happened to me.

  • Thanks @PhotographersOnUTube and Greg. I thought anything for profit will need model release. I might give this a shot when there's a marathon or event here in PIttsburgh

  • Greg I know you are not Shmapple user so can you tell what is your video editing software that You using on your PC? thanks

    nice vid btw.

  • @czajel I use Adobe Premiere

  • How did you sell the photos? Were you hired to be there?

  • @nguyencs I sell them on my website.

  • For this shot I'd like to have between 10 - 30 Nikon SB900's on a mount all firing at 1/1 Full Power just before the cyclists reach you, then you can capture great action shots of blinded cyclists crashing into fences, ditches and walls and then sell the images to FailBlog etc.

  • @speckyprick That would be really cool for a commercial shoot or a portrait session but it just doesn't work for 1500 riders in such a short amount of time.

  • Great video Greg. I like that you explain all that you are doing and what and why and who etc. Feels like I'm in the class on the field with you :)

Please install some forum where we can upload and comment pictures properly...

And you are becoming a celebrity, people recognize you on the street ;)

"I'm trying to shoot them.. pictures that is, you know" :D

  • everything is smack in the middle.. so composition goes out the window... some motion blur would be nice too...

  • @DodgyPodgy That's what sells for this type of event, you can't get too creative when you want to sell the photos after.

  • @DodgyPodgy I do equestrian events and you can't be creative at all, only about 4-5 types of picture will sell. Dull and boring (to me) but you have to shoot for the market and that's what they want.

    The same thing here.

  • @snappuppy I have 6 equestrian events coming up this summer...3 of them I can be a little creative but the other 3 will be quite boring. Finally someone understands!

  • @gregorycazillo hahaha amen, what are they, dressage, jumping, cross country? Need a second shooter?

  • @snappuppy Hunter/Breeder and jumping...I'm doing ok right now, thanks!

  • @snappuppy Thanks for the info...

  • love this vid. please more

  • I would use slower shutter speed to add some movement

  • @handsomelok Those don't sell!

  • Great Video! Haha "I'm trying to shoot them.. Picture that is.. you know that" :)

  • Greg, why haven't you tried going on a lower angle? Looks like most of the photos were taken from a standing position. I was just thinking it might be cool :)

  • @Wuzzysbrand06 Lower angle would give me a big white sky instead of the great field in the background...not ideal.

  • Why do you shot this in A and not in M? Is A the best setting for events like this? If you shoot the bikers you can't compose right? So i have to focus on the eyes of head with the middle crosair in my viewfinder and shoot? Or is there a way to compose moving objects? Thnx for yet another good video Gregg

  • @gandalfnl2000 well , I guess A (Aperture mode) is better mode here simply because the camera will response to the change in lighting and therefore you don't have to worry about it. which result better exposure photos.

  • @gandalfnl2000 The light was changing a lot although you can't see it from the video, thats why I was on aperture priority which I prefer over shutter prio. You should choose your focus point based on the composition you want and then put that point on their face.

  • I like the shots with superwide

  • Loved it :) Thanks greg!

  • @ErnieCosmo low angle would have made the sky my only background, not idea for this situation.
