Chronicles of the Heroic Knight was so much better! it had character development on that blue haired fag and the berserker dude. Cant remember this shit. FUCK ANIME
I just wish you could have touched a bit on the sub-plot with Parn's father, which popped up quite a bit from time to time, and did affect a lot of the rulers that Parn and company encountered....I usually like to watch series with the original Japanese cast with subtitles, and I thought the Japanese voice cast added a lot of subtlety to the characters, more than most voice-over cast has been able to do.
I always thought the opening theme was the single best thing about this show, honestly I was disappointed with the rest of the show -and I was about 12 years when I watched it the first time around- and I pretty much agree with most of what you said, but I still looooove the opening theme, how can you not ?!!
pls try to remember that this series started 1987, i dont think you can properly review it nowadays since Things of RolePlay Style are mostly gone (oh fuck yeah lotr is alive..)
the japanese voices are really good, i have never heard the english voices but the german dub is one of the greatest ever used for anime. they used famous voice actors from LotR & star wars. I think its extremely important at which age you watch this series
I agree with @dragatus and @Yora21. This was the second anime I had ever watched and the first that had me begging for any kind of character development. And I guess that's why I was so angry while listening to your review. I LOVE the characters in this anime but can't really argue with you that they never really made any progress. I think these characters will always be some of my favorites and I will always look on this anime fondly, but you have every right to hate it. Deedlit x Parn fo'life!
@fleximusmaximus I don't truly hate this show, I rarely hate anything but I honestly just didn't feel what other people felt about the show. I just didn't get the same result. For the record though, I LOVED Deedlit and Parn. I very much support them and I made it clear in my review anyway that Deedlit was a fantastic character who carried me through most of the show.
@BionicSlime I watched your Twelve Anime couples video after this one and couldn't help but wish the two of them were on there. I don't know. It's kind of funny. I had been catching up on anime recently and some stuff had made me nostalgia on to this anime. Which then brought me here. Which then made me watch more of your videos because of the neutral view. It's refreshing. Keep up the good work and thanks for the response. Decades later and still brings you back.......
@fleximusmaximus As much as I do support love and enjoy Deedlit and Parn as a couple, they just honestly were not one of my most favorite couples. I'm glad to hear your enjoying my videos and that they could bring back such memories and your insightful comments. I always try to be honest with my reviews but you gotta remember, that doesn't always mean I will agree with everyone's opinion on the subject.
@testogel85 You know what? As far as characters go I can agree with that. Absolutly. Those two were very well established. That subtle, almost sexual, bond that the animators brought out of those two was powerful. You didn't have to devour a lot of chewy teen angst for it. Don't get me wrong though. As much as I like Ashram and Pirotess and their struggle, I have a greater affinity for the Deedlit and Parn because of that uncomfortable tension between the two that people seem to complain about.
A small correction: Record of Lodoss war is not based on a videogame. It all started as a transcript of a D&D campaign.
I watched it in japanese with english subtitles, soi I can't comment about the english voice acting, but the japanese one was pretty good. Other than that I more or less agree with the review, but I'd give it 2/5 stars if I wanted to be objective and 3/5 stars if I was being purely subjective.
I just wish I'd seen it back when I was 15, I would've loved it so much.
It really seems like the reviewer already had his mind set that this anime is horrible after reading it was takin out of a D%D session. Was Ashram not a kick ass bad guy? Who knew he would sacrafice himself for pirotess. Sorry but the story isnt trash; its epic. I sense the people who do not like these kind of Lost Gems would rather watch Naruto, Bleach, or Gundam, and have that rated as the best animes ever. sorry but some people like a lil mateur theme.
@kawaiisaki Never seen Gundam, nor would I call it, Naruto, or Bleach the best anime ever. I didn't make up my mind before I saw it, I watched it and I didn't like it: end of story, Don't assume you know what I consider "the best anime out there" by one review. Sounds to me you had your mind set on me beforehand....sound familiar?
@BionicSlime To be honest ive enjoyed those 3 animes i mentioned but they are way overated and put way too high up on many peoples lists. You can see clearly see this anime had mix feelings and allot of people like it, so wouldnt you agree it appeals to certain people? I'd like to know what your favourite action/adventure animes are; Mine r< Claymore, Berserk,Record of lodoss wars.
@kawaiisaki But that can be said about every anime. Every anime appeals to certain people, I was asked to review this show and I was completely honest about it: I didn't enjoy it that much and I rated it based on what I saw. How everyone else feels about it is their own right as is mine to feel this was about it. To be honest, you'll probably think I'm contradicting myself by my choice of action/adventure anime series but they are my honest picks: Dragon Ball/Z, Trigun, Dirty Pair, & Soul Eater.
@levon3585 I hardly found this fun nor did I see the show trying to BE fun, there were small moments of fun but to call this series meant to be fun does not at all fit if you ask me.
I like Lodoss War, but I basically agree with this review. The animation is awsome, but the story really is crap. There are lots of really good ideas for characters, but nothing is done with it. In the japanese version, the voice acting is not that bad.
The animation team did a great job, and for their work, I love Lodoss War.
But the script writers really sucked very badly.
My rating would probably be 3/5. I really want to make it 4, but the story is just too bad for that.
Hmm, i cannot back this review much. I mean it is based off comics from 1986 people! And to even bother with reviewing the english dubbing is pointless. If you watched anime in the late 80's to mid 90's like i did you know that dubbing sucked then and still does. I mean it is like trying to review Dickens when all you read is Twilight....
@xombi87 Its not pointless, specially since I'm not going to skip reviewing dubs simply because of what date they were dubbed in. I review each show as best I can and if your not happy with the results then don't watch it. I review based on what I see, even if the dub sucked, nothing I saw in here story wise really wowed me. I didn't grow up with this show, I watched it like last year or so, if it doesn't age well that's not my fault.
I happen to be one of the few here who actually likes the dub of RECORD OF LODOSS WAR for the OVA. It's old and it does have its share of awkward moments, but it is one I don't mind listening to, as the voices are fairly well cast and mostly very good (Deedlit especially). There are places where the delivery is a bit rough, but a lot of '90s dubs were worse than this. The LODOSS TV dub is much weaker, though.
This a Majestic Masterpiece, European Fantasy fused with Japanese Fantasy is a perfect combination. I'm not so fond of Japanese Fantasy, but when it's based on Western Fantasy like Dungeons and Dragons: It could only be a masterpiece :)
I do agree with you big time on how this series is based mostly on, "Good vs Evil", and how it doesn't really bring anything new to it that way, but hey, it's a fantasy story, so I didn't quite expect much more than that to begin with. Though I would like to point out that the 13 episode OVA does sort of astray from the light novels that it was originally based on due to time/budget restraints. Thus why we don't see any of the group looking for their mind controlled buddy.
I thought Lodoss was based off of an actual role playing session between some of the creators not off of a video game. Am I wrong? I agree with you about the american dub. It was horrible and only reinforces my original stand of only listening to the original japanese. This is also especially true in regards to bubblegum crisis.
@boomadatigger What I read that it came from a game of course I could be mistaken, as for Bubblegum crisis the 2040 dub however I thought was supremely awesome and its one of my favorite animes of all times. I never really cared for the older Bubblegum series from what I saw of them.
@BionicSlime The original BGC series was set up so the viewer had to infer or read between the lines about certain things. Not to mention that the music and action were more in tune than the action in the tv show. I have the tv show on dvd and while it does have its moments I still find it vastly inferior when compared with the original series. Granted, the tv version had more character development and appeared to be on the verge of becoming better than the original yet never reached that...
@boomadatigger height. I had some concern when it came to some redesigns of the suits--the character designs were vastly superior to the orignal. Priss actually looked like a rocker. But good animation and a bad story (going to the moon?!) does not make it superior than the original. But then everyone is entitled to their opinions.
@boomadatigger The moon to me sounds no more absurd than people barfing out kamikaze ghosts, throwing magical tiaras at people, or conjuring Godzilla sized frogs from a bit of blood and their hands. Anime is far too insane to limit one's ability to supend beliefs.
@BionicSlime True but one has to still have some parameters especially when it comes to comparing shows or movies. Suspending one's DISBELIEF is one thing, but not to the point of all acceptance, especially when it comes to making comparisons, And not all anime is insane.
@BionicSlime As far as the moon goes then yes it is absurd when you realize that the original BGC was grounded in a kind of reality where going to the moon just would seem absurd. Now, I'm not saying BGC was grounded in hard science realism but the universe DID have rules that it adhered too.
@boomadatigger No one is talking about the original I am talking about 2040, I would never bother comparing rules in one anime to another even if its a remake. Not all anime is insane but 90% of anime deals with something bizarre from robots, aliens, magic, monsters etc.
@boomadatigger I can actually answer this one for BionicSlime. Yes this series was based on a groups actual session(s) within a pen and paper role playing game known as, "Sword World", which is why this entire series is mostly, "Good vs Evil", seeing as how that's how most people would play an rpg back in the 1970's. The light novels that were written off those sessions inspired a cpu game that came out in 1988, and that's what inspired the show. I hope that answers any questions you may have.
on the record of older anime i rewatched yu yu hakusho and i realized its even better than i remember it back on cartoon network im not a huge fan of the older anime art style but i find it kind of bridges the gap between old and new i know you're prob backed up on requests but it would be cool to hear your thoughts on it or maybe even rurouni kenshin (understanding that both of these are longer series)
