D&D takes a lot of time and preparation to set up , especially when first getting started. Which is why its rare to see anyone who plays table top type games anymore. Well, NEW players at least. Kids attention spans are at about 10 seconds these days, need instant gratification. Why go thru all the trouble with paper and books when you can just log onto WoW and play in minutes, and get the visuals along with it. It it unfortunate, kids are just being so dumbed down.
Its not just nerds that play. A friend of mine, his brother who was a classic "nerd" was into it, and taught his brother to play. Well his brother was also an amazing football player. He was the one who introduced me to it, at first I thought it was kind of alot of work, but after a while he had many "jock" types and many players on the team playing. Yes we did the classic party type stuff, and usually smoked alot of weed before playing, but we DID play, and had some great times doing so.
I noticed that Role Playing, whether you use a table top game like DnD or not has always been a larger (or should I say, BETTER) stimulant for intelligent folk. People tend to throw around the word "geek" and "nerd" a little too much now days. Some people don't plop in front of a TV for hours watching the horrible shows that air now, or wasting time playing button mashing games.
I love paper rpgs ( aka, TRUE rpgs ) but the people around my age group ( I'm fairly young ) just don't seem to even want to TRY it. I've composed a few rpgs in different settings ( ages actually ) And when I ask them if they'd like to try a game I made, I tell them the name they think it sounds cool and when they see the paper, they refuse to try.
@runescape951230 sounds like you need some better friends, lol. but if your looking to pen and paper RPG, then check online, you'd be surprised how many just community games are around.
It seems that ppl who want to play this don't have enough ppl to plAy it with. I for one am one of those ppl and the only person tht would be willing to play dnd with me would be my dad (who did when he was a kid) so I'm kinda screwed right now
Just think of it as acting in drama class, but there are rules, and a improv, and a game beyond just acting. There is strategy. And good company hopefully!
Dungeons & Dragons is the most fun I've had in a while. Learning the mechanics of a game and inventing my own back story to my character is so exciting.
I'm not denying that it's nerdy, but it's worth it if it's this fun. Not only that, but it could introduce a person to the hobby of miniature painting. Obviously this isn't for everyone, but I can't wait to finally have a go at it.
I'm sure all my friends would try it with me. I already have bought it and my family doesn't like it. The only problem is most of my friends probably would think it would be too hard or deep.
Or just Stupid i know it ! cause i bought a game and i tried to play it with my friends Most of them LOVED IT but same said it's shit for kids ( they werent even playing :P ) the ones who where playing they loved the idea try it with them i think they shall like it ;)
they used to make the battlemats but they were discontinued, basically foam board, some permanent markers, scissors and some adhesive laminate, draw grid squares, on foam board, dry, cut into shapes, use the adhesive foam, draw out a map of whatever it is you are playing in. Use EXPO's on the laminate.
Lawl. Seriously, this is so nerdy that I absolutely love it. xD. I really want to buy a DnD board game... but lol... I only have one friend who'd be willing to try xD
You don't need a board at all. You don't need figures, you don't need any of that 4th edition nonsense. That was just created to make money for WoTC.
You can do everything in your heads. In the 30 years of Role Playing I think I used a "map" "Board" with Figures like 3 times. And I felt it just limited the game and slowed the game down.
You can get a piece of hex paper to use, and mark down where everyone is in a room just to get your barrings but it isn't really needed at all.
You're right, when my friends and I play, the DM draws the map of the area we are in on a piece of paper and uses dice to pinpoint our locations, thats it =D

@mercturq I can agree with that, besides being a nerd is fun. Not that there's anything wrong with watching terrible television, or video games.

It is geeky as Hell, but it is great fun. And it's all in the people, so make sure your playing with cool people who won't be assholes to each other.
