  • i wish i could whistle like a boss v.v

  • How is it possible for a "treadmill" to move in two dimensions... the only way to do this that I can think of would be with a sphere... and this clearly is not a sphere - it's a guy walking on a wood floor with a box around him on low-friction wheels.

  • User position is sensed using cameras. Position information tells the control computer when and in what direction to move the belt. This system uses an external operator. When you want off you yell "OFF!" Alternatively, you could have a RF off button strapped to your arm. Or you could run at 7 mph, faster than the system, and step off. Or you could jump 4 feet sideways and land on the edge. Easy.

  • How do you get off of it???

  • how would you get off if it was stuck on???lol

  • THE SECOND TUNE IS THE REVERSE OF THE FIRST ONE

I can has treadmill now?, if not, how much to buy?

  • this is a moving room over a stationary floor. why do you think they don't show the "treadmill" itself?

  • Combine it with this :

    /watch?v=WDlvn3voblQ&feature=related

  • Work on this was finished in 2005. No further work has been done since, though the US Army has several units running. With the new motion capture systems now available (e.g. Kinex) there is a new cost point that should be interesting.

  • do you know when this will be finished?

  • poor fella looks stuck

  • Omni-directional, eh?

    Ok, then. Walk up.

  • i want that job :D

  • How does it stand running though?

  • The whistling is creepy

  • how do you get off????? just jump you idiots! :P

  • haha now you can get exercise when you play 1st person shooters. badass.

  • theres a delay between the time you stop and it stops moving, i think if you're running or something on it and you stop, it would throw you off, did you encounter anything similar to that during testing?

  • by the way can you tell me where i can see its basic way of working (i mean inner workings) just the idea..is it like an escalator ??(with the same part going in a circle somehow)

  • fucking songs stuck in my head now!

  • this is all pointless you can only do so much with this brain computer interfaces will be ultimate solution

  • @TheFelixxRevolution You really should open your mind. Go look up hacks for the Xbox Kinect.

  • @1stNightingale well im not saying it isnt cool but it would never be like brain computer games could be like the matrix lol i just think it kinda sucks so much energy is going into stuff like this just skip and get to the good shit :p im pretty sure if people could make a nuclear bomb in the 40's we should be able to plug our brains into a computer by the 20's :p

  • @TheFelixxRevolution It is a lot harder to recognise and receive brain signals compared to registering movement. Also people are aiming for immersion which physicality can bring. Your scenario has many health risks and can lead to reality perception issues same as in the Matrix. Its a dangerous concept that will be hard to make acceptable by the public on social status and privacy boundaries. You are basically speaking about surrogate the movie but without the real world side. I preferred GAMER.

  • @1stNightingale you know ive never seen either of those movies.....Gamer was on the other night to lol.well yeah i mean its gunna be cool even kinect is pretty neat,i guess "pointless" whats the wrong word i dint mean to start a debate :P i just find bci is getting over looked by the public have you seen the neuro head sets or emotive epoc??

  • @TheFelixxRevolution Yes & i think that is amazing but using that in a gaming situation takes away from the immersion but gives control. I like the idea of being physically involved with my environment & alternate reality. The idea of being fit while gaming real games, not Wii Fit, games is great. Both ideas have merit but i find this one to be more morally safe as the mind control one can let people do things that aren't right as well as allow them to not move which leads to bad health issues.

  • this is getting closer to my idea of an endless hill you can bomb on a skateboard

  • This guy is going nowhere.

  • I'm so glad it became real !!!! I imagined an immersive interface like that since I was a kid !!

  • So what happens if you built a bigger one and it broke so that it wouldn't shut off? Do you die of starvation in the middle after days of jumping, running, and walking trying to escape the middle, after it re-calibrates you to it after every-movement? It could be used in a horror film where you trap someone on in a virtual desert lake bed, with no end.

  • that's amazing

  • I can see somebody trying to bunny-hop on this thing and fall off entirely.

  • Im a graduating business student. Who would i talk to about getting into this field.

  • Omg!! They can make like a virtual reality call of duty! :O Or... LEFT 4 DEAD VIRTUAL REALITY! Of course.. I'm not quite sure how it will work with physical contact with elements in the game...

  • @appleXjuice In the implementation that uses an hmd, you can have robotic elements, or "haptic displays" that physically interact with the user. For instance, a shotgun blast that hits you in the chest can be replicated using a pneumatic cylinder punching you really hard. Unfortunately, using a video CAVE makes physical interaction with virtual objects nearly impossible.

  • @cywalk they already have a vest that used compressed air to simulate hits in first person shooters.

  • @cywalk there are suits that replicate tactile sensations as well as devices that create sensations of interaction with others, the one that comes to mind is the system Firefighters use to tell where exits are, or other teammates in smoke, which creates a pull in the direction they need to go.

  • @cywalk

Advanced data suits could most likely fix that, but of course they'd have to be really, really advanced.

Collision: The suit would halt movement when in-game and next to an entity by causing tiny, electrically charged metallic plates to stiffen and prevent any conflicting force of a particular bodily apparatus. Forward advancement could be controlled by using *ahem* a powerful, durable, and maneuverable frame connected to the ceiling of said treadmill which would stop movement.

  • @cywalk

Neural Perception: When an object is felt, the suit reacts with vibrations that equalize to the feeling of the material felt (Eh... like I said, advanced suit). Frequency of the responsive vibrations would require precise impulses to replicate said felt object.

Pain- Quick, sharp, and very strong vibrations that affect the damaged area (Most likely would need an option to increase or decrease the intensity level.

Environmental- Delicate or harsh impulses that respond to touch.

  • @appleXjuice They can use certain things like the vest that has mechanisms in it to hit you when where and how hard (non-lethally) you get hit. Also check out the kinect hacks as they are basically a VR unit if the screen is on your face.

  • @appleXjuice simply stop the treadmill and let them run into the walls =P

  • This should be used for Virtual Reality Games

  • @konrad12xpl That is its original intent.

  • Virtual insanity

  • Does running work too?

  • @uzumakimounir Yes, up to 6 mph in early versions. Much faster once development is more mature.

  • i thought of something like this. I would like to know how you designed yours?

  • but do you ever run out of floor? :-/

also, how about putting the entire platform on some mechanism that tilts it? that way you could simulate inclination (hills etc)

  • now all u need is a suit and sensors attached to it and a headgear too enter to the virtual game like .hack//SIGN

  • @saiojin you have no idea how much i have dreamed of that since i saw the show back in the late-ish 90's

  • How does it work, I notice that once you changer direction it stops, but I looks nothing like a tread meal

  • what happens if you run?

  • @crazimator

The floor is slaved to your speed. If you speed up, so does the floor.

  • Hmm... im gona go for a walk lol

  • anyone else hear the second life teleport sound effect at the beginning and end?

  • this + multi touch technology + 3d location detection sensors = holodeck.

    patent for haudace.

  • @haudace + crysis

  • make it go faster !

  • Good luck getting off.

So, whoever stole the plans for this from that picture I drew in primary school, after seeing a REAL LIVE VIRTUAL helmet, please stand up. I mean, it was drawn in crayon, but still..

  • awsomeeeeeee

  • I dont think the movement afterwards is a lag effect, it's centering him. I dont know how this would work for videogames or anything. But as a treadmill, it makes sense.

  • @talical66257 look at the xbox kinect that's coming out. combine that with this type construct and it's entirely plausible to see the most realistic approach to VR

  • @teddywanthug

That is the ultimate fate of this work. Can't wait!

  • are you guys retarded? its obvious the ROOM is moving, not the floor..

  • @tomboman

Yee of little faith... go to the CyberWalk project videos, and you can see a copy of this design working without the backdrop

  • A fat person's living hell manifested...

  • What about jumping off?

  • This is like something from 'Saw' where some guy is locked in a room, walking on a floor that won't allow him to move further than a feet and he's stuck there forever. The whistling only adds further torment.

  • @raabdj

Yes, we expect to see this device in the next Saw movie

  • What a stupid thing...

  • @xY00xH00x just imagine the level of immersion you could experience if you mixed this with retinal imaging display technology, i fail to understand how immersion is stupid

  • run bitch, run !!!

  • 2nd tune is the same as the first but backwards ^^

  • RUN!!!!

  • how the fuck do you get off that thing!?

  • @Notenoughepics You either jump, place something to stop it, or they use the rope connected to that guy.

  • @Notenoughepics OMG i can't stop laughing, you bastard! XD

  • easy unhook

  • @Notenoughepics

The system looks at you electronically. We could easily design a gesture signaling stop, or you could just say "stoop" and the floor will freeze. For the design in the video, there is always an outside operator who freezes the floor.

  • @Notenoughepics Only the latest in virtual reality technology; it's called a "Power Off" button.

  • @Notenoughepics watch your language. Not! just kidding. i cuss up a storm too. lmfao.

  • loooool

  • is the floor moving or the room?! o.O

  • @siralucard19 lol

  • lol it will be nice with glasses to play counter strike on the floor with some devices on your hand to react when you shoot or point,it will be fun to hide or run and then shoot,or even go play some movie or anime, lol what it will be like mortal combat games, you can even train box or whatever sport without hurting

  • dude, it's real, haha.

  • @Avrigoth Yeah right, and also the world really is flat and the moon landing was faked in some weird ass place.

  • the last half is the first half backwards

  • someone has an idea of how does it detect for what direction is He walking for? maybe the floor is touch sensitive? or video cameras?

  • @pumpfever Since there's no visible means of tracking - and i wouldn't expect an early prototype to have underfoot tracking.

I have a feeling someone offcamera is directing it manually.

  • @roidroid What exactly do you think that rig is for attached to his waist? holding up his trousers?

  • @jacksawild it's a harness to catch him if he falls over.

  • @jacksawild

John (the walking guy) could use some trouser jacks, for sure. But in this case, the harness is for safety. If he fell and his arm went into the wrong part of the machine, it would get lopped off quite quickly.

  • @jacksawild Don't be silly! It's a poop and pee-pee catcher. No one wants to leave cyberspace when things get interesting. Now you can tinkle and grunt on the go.

  • run bitch run!!!

  • this what we need for game! all we need is the virtual headset to play some call of duty !

  • ok.. the whistling was cool for the first 5 seconds... but no.. you gotta stop man

  • song is the same but backwards

  • It's pretty cool. Better than any attempt I have seen for this type of thing. Still, what games can we plug it into? How much would it cost? How in the world can we put that into our living room?

Okay, if we have a giant room purely dedicated to gaming, and about 500K to spend, I am quite sure we can manage this.

  • Virtual simulators are more for military training purposes than they are for recreational.

  • Yes, I think you're right.

  • I had this idea about 7 years ago, but of course, as a 14 year old kid, I didn't have any of the resources or know how to bring an idea to frution.

I then thought of using it as a means of "confinement" torture in prison...since the convict would not be able to step off the unit. He would be trapped O_O

  • thats one of few practical applications for this i can think of also you could starve them and put food metres from them

  • How do you get off?

  • you don't héhé

  • I usually go to video google and look up "Big tits" or something.

  • Hahahahaha xD

  • @barhamd

    hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • @barhamd You don't.......

  • @barhamd LOL

  • coool

  • Comment removed

  • LOL, you're serious?

  • that was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo epic and vote yes

  • i wonder how natural that feels

  • hes whistling the same tune but backwards right? cause he startes moving backwards? Right? :P great idea like but what about running? if im getting chased by aliens/zombies or both i wanan move fast not walk xD

  • He's not actually whistling in the second half. It's just playing the first half of his whistling over backwards. You can hear it in the way he breathes between whistles.

  • About how much moolah would this thing cost?

  • how much what?

  • @ragnaroksbringer 3 moolahs

  • As u hopfully know, this is the easy part of this project ^^

  • Nice, this is the kinda thing I pictured for how virtual reality would be possible, a treadmill that kepted centring u as u walked, cool to see somthing like that actually got made ^^

    God bless,

    Dan.

  • Yea, these things are real. Designed as an interface for cyberspace, just like the description says. Handy in military VR training exercises. This is the first one i've seen with this type of floor tho... Maybe this one is a fake, but rest assured, we have the tech to do this.

  • It's real. I don't know if you've ever seen a barrel at a park where you can stand on top of it and just walk on it. You go know where, but the barrel rolls. This is basically the same principle. The problem I see with this is when he stands still abruptly, it will have him still moving. I've thought about this idea as well, but in the end it would just cause more problems. Not only that, it's not good for an in home thing lol

  • @iamxxv:

Muslim(s) are people who practice the religion of Islam. You are the jackass and idiot, and you and your uneducated ilk are making this world "shit"

  • This is a fake - the reason there is blue material is so you can't see the large gymnasium they are pushing this box round on. The camera, harness frame and walls are all being pushed round, the floor is just a wood strip floor. Watch the walk pattern as well, there is clearly a limited amount of space.

Hopefully I've explained this clearly enough, becuase once you realise what's going on all the smaller motions, the way the guy moves, the way the harness moves, all make sense.

  • silly little man. You fail.

  • I'd normally be quick to believe something like this, why would they pretend to have developed this? But you might be right =/ darn.

  • Not so.

Look "Omnidirectional treadmill" up on wikipedia. They exist and the military has funded them for training purposes.

  • oh owned yea its really look at the related videos with the title "cyberwalk project" u can see the whole mechanics to it to u are completely wrong buddy

  • how the hell did u come up with the idea that this is fake?!

The technology is there! And even if this vid was a fake, the technology would still be there to make a real one!

  • @theg33kshow you know what... you have raised my suspicions.

the more i ponder it - i just cannot think of any reason to have that blue material up there. It has no purpose, why is it there?

Granted - it never moves (you'd expect it to wave a bit if the whole rig was moving).

But why would you even put that up? seriously... what reason is there.

You don't build a rig like that, then surround it with a functionless blue tarp.

    suspicious...

  • @roidroid the tarp is to create a backdrop that is not distracting. When presenting technologies, it is important to doll up the place a bit. It is surprising how unattractive your proposal can look if your audience can see garbage framing the stage. It's all part of the pitch.

  • @roidroid

The blue tarp is to prevent you from seeing the proprietary machinery from other clients. The work was done at MTS Systems, in Eden Prairie, MN. They have many other projects besides this one.

  • @cywalk thankyou.

  • stop whistling fucking annoying.

  • thats stupid because the "omnidirectional treadmill" lags as soon as he stops, if this was a video game you would be sliding off a fucking cliff lol

  • Comment removed

  • the whistling is obviously to drown out shouts of ' to me to you' as the huge team of lackies move the floor ' left he said left , back i'm sure he said back !!'

  • haha

  • ah the rat wheel of the worker - made real.

  • now use that interface and implement it with like a FPS game....

    Epic~~ :P

  • Muslim is a religion you jackass. Idiots like you make this world shit.

  • is that saddam?

  • if they do come out with an everyday thing like this its gonna be hella expensive

  • THATS SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL!!!

  • It's the same music, played backwards, lol

  • It works using a matrix of pressure pads below the moving surface. These allow the computer to tell what position the user is in relation to the centre and also what direction he is moving or moved direction towards. This allows the treadmill to change direction and return him to the centre.

  • WHOSE CONTROLLING THE ANGLE OF THE TREADMILL???

Is the guy walking actually doing it? And how if so?

  • If you look at his back, you'll see a metal plate with several reflective spheres. Above the treadmill (outside the view of the camera), there is motion capture system tracking those reflective spheres.

When the user moves outside of the center of the treadmill, the motion capture system tells the treadmill to pull him back to the center of the treadmill.

The idea is it if you are always in the center of the treadmill, then you will always have plenty of treadmill left.

  • The music is absolutely dumb with that video..

  • you call that music??

  • The question isn't if it's awesome or not, the question is HOW DO I GET OFF THIS THING??! :((

  • LOL... !

  • JACK ME IN! I'M READY!

  • You can whistle really well! :D

&&; I like the idea of the Cyber walk.

It would go well with one of the VR Helmets such as the Trimersion.

  • everyone always beats me to the revolutionary shit... this should be integrated with 3d games with a round screen. think of the experience

  • i could have so much fun with this

  • WHAT SONG IS THAT

  • From the movie Oliver

  • It's from the movie Oliver

  • maybe they will turn it into a personal cinema where you can actually be there!

  • the second half is just the first half backward

  • wow thats amazing, wonder if there ever gonna make it tilt to simulate going up hill/down hill, or make it do a stair climbing effect

  • i can't wait to play games that use this controler. like imagine actually being in the game. plus then people would get exercise as well

  • this is clever i got to say. got the song stuck in my head :P. but that would be awesome to use in a video game

  • wallace and gromit?

  • the river quai march!! wallaca and gromit o.o gawd we are fucked. todays youth are retards

  • omg i thought off this a while ago damnit lol nic job dudes

  • this is awesome, i was thinking about this last night but instead of being on the ground and needing a rotatable movable floor (or whatever you want to call it) one is suspended above the ground in a harness that alows free movement, this would make more complex movements possible.

my neural impulse actuator arrives next week so we'll see how i go ;)

  • then jumping would be imposible but u have a good idea
