einfach unbeschreiblich!!
Just saw Max Raabe last night at The Paramount in Oakland. My third time seeing the orchestra in person and still utterly sublime. I can't get enough!
Just spent another splendid evening with Herr Raabe and his Palast Orchester; my third time witnessing his magic in person. I'm always knocked out by the precision and versatility of his orchestra. Such beautiful phrasing, the elegant legato lines, and le hot jazz. I'm always sorry when these evenings must come to an end.
max is a messenger from weimar, a period of artistic foment, the rise of reactionary politics which were to almost destroy the world, and of course financial crisis. welcome home max, just like the old days....
I was watching the PBS concert and now I found these videos- WOW! I feel as if I were transported to 1930 Berlin- I am absolutley enchanted by Max and his fabulous orchestra-I plan on going to the Chicago performance in April!
I was watching the PBS concert and now I found these videos- WOW! I feel as if I were transported to 1930 Berlin- I am absolutley enchanted by Max and his fabulous orchestra-I plan on going to there Chicago concert next April!
My favorite Era of German History...the Weimar Period...such an explosion of arts and creativity...painfully brief flowering of democracy and freedom between the wars.
I'm grateful to Max and his band for re-creating this music and these performances that are so vividly evocative. Zeitlos, wie er sagt.
@itsareligionofpeace Noam Chomsky stated (I paraphrase loosely) that the Weimarer Republic was the peak of western civilization, culturally (music, fine arts) and technologically. Like Rome, such greatness DEMANDS a fall into the pits, and it came. I see you insist on only seeing the 'brown' side of things.
Check out Brendan McNally's dark comic novel "Germania" (Simon & Schuster, 2009), about the Magical Loerber Brothers, four Jewish vaudeville entertainers and former child stars who were the toast of Berlin before WWII and who reunite right as Hitler is about to kill himself.
Does anyone know if this Carnegie Hall performance is available for sale? I found the German version of the show on Amazon, but I really would like to purchase the version with Max speaking to the audience in English. I caught it on PBS twice, and it was so charming.
He certainly has a charming accent to American ears, whether talking or singing. It is surely a part of his allure, along with the tuxedoes, the '20s-style instrumentation, and of course these grand old songs presented as composed for dance orchestras in that bygone era.
The articulation of Max Raabe singing in English shames most American singers by his better English elocution or pronunciation, which is appropriate in his tuxedo, refined style, subtle humor, whimsical charm, epitomizing the last Epoch of Art in our Culture, the 1920s-30s Art Deco period he revivifies here, after decades of excess of rock-headed roll out of show-offs' neurotic noise. Delightfully refreshing is Max Raabe and his truly entertaining, refined, amusing, Palast orchester of Berlin.
I have seen them with my then 93 (born 1913) years old grandmother, who loved to visit ballrooms when she was young, in Duesseldorf a few years ago and she said them are like the bands she heard in the 20s and 30s in Berlin. I am sure you will have a great evening to hear them in March. Enjoy it :-)
@ghs1357 - I missed that one, but you can bet I will not miss him this spring when he plays in Peekskill and then in Newark. And I am trying to figure out if I can make the one in Pittsburgh!!
does America have an oldies band like this? it's weird to hear american pop classics sung with a german accent. i'm a young person and not many my friends like this kind of music.
As far as I know thhey don't have a CD that's solely in English but most have both English and German songs on. I'm a huge fan, cannot wait for them to come to the UK next year.

the last part with bells was the most impresive sound and there was the part that shows the hard work that they do to be "one" on the stage .MAX and PALAST orchester a big BRAVO and many thanks for the reminding to some of the most beautifull past times !!!
I love this presentation and now I am going to KILL myself.....I only discovered MAX a week after he appeared at Carnegie Hall. I would have been sitting on the aisle, 3rd row center orchestra savroring every note and then I would have waited at the stagedoor to meet him. Thank you for the Magnificent Max...I hope he returns one day. :-)

The song is "Heute nacht oder nie" which was the name of the programme recorded at Carnegie Hall. Search YouTube for that name.

If Max Raabe objects to the word 'nostalgic', explain then why you've used it in your description? ;-)

@JJR93 thinks the Weimar Republic period is the best period in German history......
Ahhh - ya like 2,000 % inflation, running mob violent street battles between SA and Reds, starvation, political and social anarchy.
Think HItler would have been made absolute dictator in any other period of German history?
Wow - one can read such utter nonsense on Youtube
