This band was an atrocity and really typifies a civilization utterly lost to the intangible grasp of music. To me, I instantly know this is mediocre. It's like talking to colorblind people and trying to tell them a particular shirt and tie don't belong together. You can exhaust yourself and make no inroads. This is what happens in a mommy culture. We're all equal so we need a soundtrack that literally ANYONE could've written. Drop the bombs and let's start over.
I remember the first time I heard this song was them performing it live on David Letterman in the early 80's, I thought "Holy crap, what a great song!" Still love it to this day...
saw them on "Reckoning" tour at club in Hartford, CT; two songs that stand out are this and "We Walk" - simply amazing, Stipe walking out w/flowers in his hair
Did you never call? I waited for your call..These rivers of suggestion are driving me away, the ocean sang, the conversation's dimmed, go build yourself another dream, this choice isnt mine... Perfection.
They played a version at the Spectrum sans Mills and Berry. When the chorus came around, at least half the house was singing, "I'm Sorry." What kind of a sing along was that. I guess they must have been sorry about something. A couple years later, I saw Elvis Costello touring behind "Spike." On "God's Comic," people were singing, "Now, I'm dead, Now I'm dead.." and Declan let them have it: your're singing along with this?...Everybody, Now I'm Dead..."
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair Flow it, show it Long as God can grow it My hair Let it fly in the breeze And get caught in the trees Give a home to the fleas in my hair A home for fleas A hive for bees A nest for birds There ain't no words For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder Of my... Really? A commercial by Right Change, is that yet another group funded by the Koch brothers or some other corporate asswhipe? Really really dont like being bombarded by that kind of BS before enjoying one of REM's classics. : (

This is complete shit guys. before you hate. check out black sabbath, ledzepplin, jimi hendrix, or even acdc would be better then this depressingear bleeding peice of shit song.
the greatest bisexual american love song ever written - a stunning masterpiece by the second best band of the 1980s...vocal, bassline, timing, percussion and guitar-playing couldn't be bettered. simple, clean production and a wonderful backing vocal from mills...
besides having a groovy drummer, this was back when they gave a toss and had to sing for their dinner. Now it's painful to watch them struggle to stand under the weight of the repetitive boring shit that comes out of their amps. Hey guys - new years eve has come and gone. Throw in towel and another band a chance.
This is my favorite REM song because it's so complex. That bass line bops along nicely, and that keyboard has a happy sound in the midst of a sad song. I also love the choice of words for this familiar theme. This lovely composition is contemporary enough to where it would make for an interesting country-western song.
@amuskindu Yeah, I remember him with hair too...but funnily enough, I look at this video, and it looks like he is wearing an ill fitting wig, because his hairline is so far back on his forehead.
@amuskindu I think he would still have hair if he could. He started to seriously bald in the late 80's. It's not the appearance that matter with REM. It's the great music that will live on and on
@amuskindu i saw michael and rem not only when he had hair but when only 10 people showed up to see the band play at the Night Flight in Savannah, GA....hahaha i am old too!

"Eastern to Mountain, third-party call, the lines are down, the wise man built his words upon the rocks but I'm not bound to follow suit."
"The ocean sang, the conversation's dimmed. Go build yourself another dream, this choice isn't mine."
Two lines that have stuck with me, so profound, so brilliant--in one song, too!
