They played a version at the Spectrum sans Mills and Berry. When the chorus came around, at least half the house was singing, "I'm Sorry." What kind of a sing along was that. I guess they must have been sorry about something. A couple years later, I saw Elvis Costello touring behind "Spike." On "God's Comic," people were singing, "Now, I'm dead, Now I'm dead.." and Declan let them have it: your're singing along with this?...Everybody, Now I'm Dead..."

This is my favorite REM song because it's so complex. That bass line bops along nicely, and that keyboard has a happy sound in the midst of a sad song. I also love the choice of words for this familiar theme. This lovely composition is contemporary enough to where it would make for an interesting country-western song.
