  • Orde Wingate was a religious nutcase and a self professed zionist. Jackie Coogan, the actor, Uncle Fester in the Addams family, was a US glider pilot who flew the Chindits in

  • @alanbstard4 All true - we can agree. But the Japanese has 3 divisions out looking for Wingate, and had the Japs had those divisions and uninterrupted supplies, they would have won at Imphal and Kohima, taken India, and won the war. They didn't because of Wingate and his Chindits.

  • The Marauders were chindits. The Chindits were commanded by Stilwell and he slaughtered them. They WERE Chindits - cant you get that through your thick skill?

  • @ichonoclaster ....You don't know what your talking about. The Maurauders were NOT chindits, just like all the history books say including this video. I suppose they're all wrong and your right. Just go to the Chindits website which shows the order of battle and not one mention of the Marauders. Ditto the Marauders website, no mention of the Chindits. If they don't wear the Chindit badge, they aren't Chindits. I rest my case. Try reading a book, you might learn something.

  • @shankly01 There was no difference. The idea was a copy, they did the same job in the same area against the same enemy and had the same objective. I cannot see any difference. The only difference was they were not under Wingates command. They also lacked discipline and loved to shoot Indians for fun.

  • @ichonoclaster ......Just because they were both commanded by Stilwell after the death of Wingate and they basically did the same type of operation, does not make the Marauders Chindits. That's like saying that the British SAS and the US Delta Force who do the same type of special forces operations are one and the same when obviously they're not. Apparently you do not understand the meaning of what a Chindit is.

  • @shankly01 The Marauders were undisciplined scum who loved to shoot Indians and water Buffalo whenever they were going along in a train - just for fun put the rifle out the window and shoot unarmed civilian allies - and water buffalo - and they never did too much anyway. They hated Stilwell as much as the Chindits did. Merril had a bad heart and was a useless sycophant. Hunter was a good soldier though. Many came from stockades - The Dead End Kids and were scum.

  • @shankly01 Stilwell was an arsehole under the command of Louis Mountbatten - so the American Chindits were under the command of Stilwell but Stilwell was under the command of Louis Mountbatten

  • @ichonoclaster American weren't Chindits. They were under Merrill, the " Marauders "

  • @shankly01 The Marauders were a copy, they were going to be trained and lead by Wingate - but that arsehole Stilwell kicked up a fuss - typical. The British SAS and Delta Force are not a good example. The US didn't look at the SAS and say - hey thats a good idea - lets do exactly the same as the British.

  • @ichonoclaster marauders were NOT Chindits

  • @ichonoclaster It was a joint operation, and Stillwell was under Lord Mountbatten as the second senior officer overseeing a combined US/UK operation

  • @ichonoclaster Stilwell was commanded by Mountbatton. Stilwell was an arsehole anyway. But the whole idea was that the Americans would have a unit the same as the Chindits, in the same area as the Chindits, doing the same job as the Chindits. Wingate was going to train them. So they were a copy - the idea was a copy, so really I say there WERE Chindits. Merrill had a weak heart and was a sycophant to Stilwell. Hunter was a good man though, and the Marauders did well.

  • Merrill’s Marauders WERE Chindits and not a seperate unit.

  • @ichonoclaster ....No they were NOT Chindits. Merrill's Marauders were a completely seperate US unit and fought alongside Chinese troops under Merrill and Stilwell.

  • @shankly01 Think again - or actually read some histroy books - the Marauders WERE Chindits. That is a fact - but you have a problem with reality. To show their support the Americans offered to form an American Long Range Penetration Group to be trained and commanded by Wingate (this group later became known as Merrill's Marauders). When the British requested a supply of American light aircrafts for evacuating the wounded, the Americans instead offered to provide an air task force

  • @ichonoclaster ...After reading books by Louis Allen, Jon Latimer, Slim, John Masters, Mike Calvert to name a few, I think it's you who needs to read some history. The Marauder's were a long range penetration group, originally formed to operate under Wingate, but in fact were deployed under Stilwell and commanded by Merrill. The name Chindit is specifically Wingate's forces, not the Marauder's. Just because they were a LRPG does NOT make them Chindit's. Nice try but wrong and easily verifiable.

  • God bless all these very brave and patriotic soldiers.

  • Well, I guess that's why they don't use gliders for airborne insertions. Learn from your errors.

  • just finished the book by bernard fergusson beyond the chindwin about number 5 column my grandad was in the chindits in the kings liverpool reg dont know much bout his actual service but from what ive found out its sounds like a very hard way to fight a war

  • Yup .. my Great Uncle was a Chindit in the 3rd Column, went in with the gliders. He is still living today.

  • orde wingate was the commander of the chindits he was a tough nz national and strict disciplinarian . a lot of people got hurt just getting to the rv point.

  • My Dad was a Chindit. His regiment was a Scottish Highland one. I know he was a Seaforth Highlander but he also was in a Caledonian regiment. I am not sure. He was injured three times. Shot, Shrap and Malaria nearly got him but Scottish blood is strong and he came home. Regained a semblence of a life, but never really got over his trauma. Today they would spend thousands of pounds on his therapy. Then they said, here is a new suit and a bob, get on with it.

  • @applesky007 my great uncle was a chindit too!!

  • @applesky007 Nice. My Grandad was a Royal Marine from Birmingham and fought in the far east. Caught Malaria over 20 times lol.

Made it home safe though and is still alive and kicking.

  • My great grandad was a chindit. They might have met!

  • very tough men, my grandad was also there, had malaria 12 times, even had to eat there poor donkey, he served in the kings regiment uk, godbless you grandad

  • My father was Senior Medical Officer with the British Army - in Operation Thursday through to the beginning of 1945..

  • My grandad was in the chindits from there beging 2 end !He was an RSM in the British army , he was in the army for many years before the second world war! after the war was over he went 2 India were he ended up in doo-lalay India's most famous mental isulum! He came back 2 scotland and sadly died 14 or 15 years after the war! He was a very brave man to be fighting in the jungels of burma with the chindits! He died before i was born i hear some storys from my mum , there great! R.I.P 2 all lost

  • THere is an AIr Force summary of the Burma command that does not put it so glowingly--the infectious and communicable disease situation was grim enough that men had to be rotated out after one, at most two tours of duty. The Flying Tigers sometimes suffered the humiliation of being told that they'd made their war stories up. In their frantic haste to get the gasoline in China out some of their records got misplaced and some could never get VA benefits.

  • Tough environment, tough mission and tough men.
