I agree this is nowhere near the best star trek movie, but nothing about it was "bad." I thought it was fun, cheesy like the original series in a GOOD way, interesting, and entertaining. Compared to Insurrection, this is a great movie!
I've only been a recent convert to the Star Trek franchise - had occasionally watched the TNG when it was on TV and thought it was good. Anyway received Season 1 as a gift and decided to watch the whole series and LOVED it. Within the last 2 months watched all the movies for the first time (had seen Generations and First Contact a while ago). Whilst this was not the best movie imo, I actually enjoyed it and didn't think it was so bad. Loved all the characters so any excuse to watch ST is good!
This film isn't the worst of the ST series (that honour goes to the 2009 reboot) - it's definitely the strongest in terms of character and story (Kirk, Spock and McCoy spend more time together in this film than any other).
I don't understand what people didn't like about this one, In my opinion, this is not only the best Star Trek film, but also my favorite movie altogether!
There were two aspects of this movie that serve as the only reason why I watch it...one it makes me laugh and two, Kirk kills god after asking the greatest philosophical question, "what does god need with a starship".
This has to be one of, if not the best version of Goldsmith's legendary Trek theme. It just seems to have alot more energy and excitement then the others. But that is just my opinion.
With intelligent writing this had the potential to be the greatest of all the Star Treks. For instance, just the idea of getting to the center of the galaxy, something utterly impossible by all other Star Trek cannon, opens the possibilities of some serious discussions by Spock and Scotty about how to get there.
You have to say this for the Star trek films: from the very best (Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact) to the worst (This film, Killing Kirk and humiliating everyone else in Generations, and Insurrection) to all in between (The Motion Picture, also known as 2001: A Trek Odyssey...oy, to The Search for Spock and Death of the Greatest Ship EVER to Nemesis, also known as Khan II: Killing Data BADLY...and then I like XI but opinions vary) one constant:
@obiwanobiwan13 Thanks for putting around 15 spoilers into less than 200 words. Is there anyone else who dies that I'm not yet aware of? Spock is Kirk's father, perhaps?
Jerry Goldsmith's movie scores are just as good or better than John Williams. If anyone disagrees with that, I have one word for you: 'PATTON'. Case closed.
I always liked this movie! I never really understood why it went down as "worst star trek movie ever" It had some of the best character developement of all the Star trek movies!
@katakisLives I agree :) This is one of my favourite ST movies, and it's unfair to see it get judged unfairly because of its few (if significant) flaws. I don't know which film got butchered the worst - ST 5 or Alien 3.
@SPeacock This was a very character driven Star Trek movie and it tackled a lot of the themes that were central to the original series! the original crew all gave top notch performances in this film
I don't see why it's the worst ST movie, really... just saw it last night, and it's very cool, in the very spirit of ST: exposing energy beings who play at God. But perhaps Capn Kirk & crew had become so accustomed to their own cultural identities, that the actors actually showed too much of their own personalities (like, "ok people know we're acting!")
@TonyShow82 Yep, Atheism is usually misinterpreted. I prefer Transtheism myself, but I do see the point of Atheism. Historically speaking, it was something long overdue.
Many directors and writers have tried to expand the Trek universe and make their own versions of it, but Roddenberry will always be the master. I thank him for this excellent Mythology.
i was just reading paramount refused to give him money to make a dvd release of the film in which he originally intended it to be....thats a shame would love to have seen it i think paramount were short sighted as all the trekies would have bought it
The score is amazing and honestly, consider revisiting the film again some time. It really isn't as bad as you think. It may be one of the best examples of a classic style TV episode brought to the big screen and the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and Bones is magical.
The film's problems do impact on Goldsmith's music. He had to score so many scenes with stop/start momentum and choppy editing that there's little flow to some of the cues and some people don't like the reliance on trumpets that Goldsmith was forced into. I don't know if Goldsmith was hired because the buget was bigger for ST TFF or if paramount were neverous about the finished film edit.
this music so cool!!...I really appreciate the Original Series Motion Pictures now because of this music...and it works so good while exploring in star trek online...of corse now that meh dad's looking for a job and I can't subcribe for now there's not that much to explore in it...plus they reallly weren't done adding the rest of the environment into the game yet anyways...
Now if only they could put music has good has this in Star Trek Online without it being all battle drums and stuff....and often times no music at all!
the scene of Kirk climbing that mountain with this music in the background is one of my favorite in all Star Trek it has that good old Star Trek feeling of anything is possible the new movie completely lacks
It had a good idea then it just became an ego fest for William Shatner. The humour fell flat most of the time. The acting was actually allright, I mean most of the lead cast did good, the supporting cast were fairly ok. But yes, the score did save it.
To me, this film was botched, but the score did save it. Paramount was so cheap because they slashed this film's budget for Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Despite it's poor implementation and DRY humor, the movie's plot and themes were quite good. A Star Trek movie about searching for God and at the same time displaying how genuine the friendship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is. Who wouldn't want that?
At least the concept behind the movie was good. They "boldly went where no man has gone before." Most of the other Trek movies are just "the crew of the Enterprise fights a baddie."
Lawrence Luckinbill was pretty good in this movie. Despite there not bing very much in the way of support from the studio, he did his best to put some life into the character of Sybok. I'm not sure of this, but did he appear in anything Star Trek related afterwards? If not, then they need to cast him in the new franchise as perhaps a high ranking Starfleet officer or a Klingon, or even a Romulan.
I really enjoyed this movie and loved the soundtrack. To me the scene at the end with Kirk talking about losing a brother once is the greatest moment in all of Star Trek.
With Kirk and Spock, it's one of the best star trek movie. The first part of the music is a classic one, i love the second part since 1:12 in this song
The movie sucked cause of the producers insisting on too much humor and ILM not doing the effects... great theme though, and Kirk climbing El Capitan is one of my favorite movie moments ever.... :-)
they could of had a better plan for this movie like srsly meeting god like couldent sybock wait till he died ?? they should have done something with like ahhh!! THE WARTH OF GORN !!!!!
frankly as far as sequels go, it really wasnt that bad just kinda blasphemous and sarcastic for a lot of our tastes..and it was coming off three excellent movies so i wasnt that harsh on it like other people were. they needed a break lol
I love the Jerry Goldsmith Star Trek theme and I know it was used in the motion picture but it felt kinda odd hearing it in STV since TNG at the time had been using it for the past two years
continued - The music was excellent but too much of it was lost in a bad dub in the overall soundtrack. I honestly don't think the scenes missing due to budget reasons can rectify the problems with the script. It just isn't a strong enough story. And Shatner's emphasis on Kirk at the expense of the other characters established behaviour in TOS and the movies just doesn't give the film the right emotional feel. All of this is personal opinion and not the only point of view of the film,
continued - The comedy was too frequent and often too obvious/slapstick - the tone changed too often and too much. Apart from the actor who played Sybok who gave a good performance, none of the other supporting actors were given enough to do (e.g. David Warner). The Klingon characters were very badly conceived and lightweight. I still like some of the script ideas such as Sybok sacrificing himself, Kirk's comment about loosing a brother once, Kirk knowing he will die alone, etc. (continued)
(continued) were dragged along on a quest by Sybok rather than determining what happened in the movie. Also Sybok's ease at converting the rest of the Enterprise crew just doesn't mesh with the idea that these are the best crew members in StarFleet and dedicated to Starfleet and each other. This was really contrived and damaging to the film. The effects were sub-standard (especially by 1989). The climax could never live up to expectations since they never could find the real God (continued)
I agree that the interaction between Kirk, Spock and McCoy has some good touching moments and reminds me of TOS. I thought the scene where Sybok allows McCoy and Spock to relive their pain was well directed by Shatner, but honestly the plot was weak and the physical production didn't match the standards of the other movies. Also Shatner's direction isn't as competent as Nimoy's. A lot of mistakes were made including (acknowledged by the script's co-writer that the Trek characters (continued)
Count me among those who think this film isn't half bad, and that the score is TERRIFIC. In fact, it's the only ST soundtrack I presently own.
The first ten minutes or so of this movie are really very good. And there are neat moments interspersed throughout the film. They needed to take the script through at least two more drafts and spent another $3-5 million for decent VFX; if they'd done so, it would have been a major success, I think.
Yeah, I think that if they actually could've gotten ILM to do the effects again, this film wouldn't nearly get the bad wrap it did. But their budget was terrible and Shatner didn't even get to do a lot of the things he wanted to. It's a shame really. I would've liked to see the "definitive" Star Trek V.
Actually, I think this movie was a lot better than a people like to remember. The interaction between the main cast was INCREDIBLE, (especially Kirk, Spock and McCoy) and there was a lot of VERY funny moments ("Sulu look, the sun's come out!). Really, the story wasn't that bad, either, and Shatner's a much better writer than people give him credit for. For good or ill, it definitely captured the atmosphere of TOS. If it had been made earlier it would probably be remembered better.
Yeah this theme was used in The Motion Picture, The Final Frontier, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, although for each one Goldsmith changed or added something new and different.
My favorite opening of every Star Trek movie. I wished the latest movie would have a bit more of this theme, but it was awesome enough to go without it ;)
I watched this film the other night, if you think about hard its just like a TV episode and not as bad as its made out a lot of the time, its a time passer !!!
Best line in the whole film: "I liked him better before he died"
It is a wonderful score. I do like it a lot. It is interesting to note that star trek V was Shatner's only attempt at writing and directing. Nimoy wrote and directed star trek IV and VI. Maybe they should have just let him continue to write and direct.
that is not fair. Paramount dint back this movie up with an budget needed for a Trek movie, even worse WHILE filming Paramount gave Shatner less and less money to make the movie. really noticable at the end where ''god'' just goes poof. bigger scenes where planed.
why the budget cuts? likely because TNG cost so much to make.
and the SFX? well again paramount dint want to wait until ILM was finished with i believe an Indy movie.
Paramount wanted this movie to be as cheap as possible
maybe that fan project will show us what Shatner originally wanted the movie to be, so many budget cuts that there wasnt even enough money to make the title sequence that was in the script :(
@krazie835 Actually, I don't think Shatner was to blame. His original version of the story was a very dark story, like The Wrath of Khan, but the studio execs wanted it to be lighter, because The Voyage Home had been light and was a hit. He had some good ideas, but ther was also problems with the budget, ILM couldnt do the effects for them, and they had less time to shoot- This was the most problematic one to make
@Robotdrummerzzk It was about bad timing, too. The strike back in '88 with the Wrtier's Guild, not to mention the TNG being on the tube killed STV's chances of being a success. Still, I don't get how people still call this the worst movie of the bunch? What do I know?
I could be mistaken, but I don't beleive Shatner wrote ST 5. When 5 was made it was in the middle of a Hollywood writters strike and a set of different writters had to be hired. Even the Hollywood special effects people were on strike, and in both cases, it sure did show in this movie. Shows you just how skilled these Hollywood writers really are.
Actually Paramount Pictures "Kiddy Safe" Philosophy was what killed Star Trek V"
If the original Shatner Version of ST5 had been used it would have been a kick ass "literally" film. but NO they wanted corny humour and kiddysafe fun not violence and action. So while shatner was away working on another project they hired a braindead loser weho couldn't write a flyer to butcher the script and only told shatner when it was too late to revert back. Gotta love Producer interferance.
Shatner writes best-selling novels now. the budget cuts really hurt this movie, a fan project is working on a re-edit for this movie based on the orginal script, not sure how far they are. the idea is to create the scenes that where never shot ( including the orginal ending)
@sabamerv1313 1. Shatner didn't write ST V David Loughery wrote the screenplay based on the story idea of Shatner Bennett and himself 2. Nimoy didn't write any Star Trek movie either he directed ST III and ST IV and came up with the story of ST IV and ST VI 3. ST VI was directed by Nick Meyer
The reason why Star trek V wasn't great wasn't Shatner's fault, Paramount wanted to make changes to the story, and refused to help fund the film. At the time, Industrial Magic and Light effect (Special Effect company) was very busy working on Back to the Future and India Jones Trilogy. So his vision for the film was not interpreted well.
In the Original Script, the movie was supposed to end with Rock Monsters, but the effect was too expensive to shoot.
A good post. The soundtrack was VERY underrated. Re-used the old themes brilliantly and added some wonderful new passages, perhaps the movie was relatively poor but this music stands up against any soundtrack for anything.
People are going to send me a TON of hate mail for this, but I just gotta say it: Star Trek is great, but I like Star Wars way better.
Folks, I'm sorry. I just had to say it. Please don't hate me for voicing my opinion.

I have often thought about this movie. It could have been great if the script was given a rewrite.
-reference Dr. Sevrin's search for the planet eden
-make certain that the director knows the correct amount of decks on the Enterprise
-do away with the "fan dance" I love Nichelle, and the fan dance would have been awesome is done 25 years earlier.
-The great barrier is once again on the outside of the galaxy, and have eden inside it, a pocket
-"God" it turns out is none other than Gary Mitchell

frankly as far as sequels go, it really wasnt that bad just kinda blasphemous and sarcastic for a lot of our tastes..and it was coming off three excellent movies so i wasnt that harsh on it like other people were. they needed a break lol

I don't know what you people were talking about. This was the BEST out of the orginal six movies.

i dont think the effects are bad , the god planet looks great, the ships look great. they even used shots which ILM had already done in STAR TREK IV
TURBODORK2 2 years ago
Count me among those who think this film isn't half bad, and that the score is TERRIFIC. In fact, it's the only ST soundtrack I presently own.
The first ten minutes or so of this movie are really very good. And there are neat moments interspersed throughout the film. They needed to take the script through at least two more drafts and spent another $3-5 million for decent VFX; if they'd done so, it would have been a major success, I think.
Kirok 2 years ago 2
Yeah, I think that if they actually could've gotten ILM to do the effects again, this film wouldn't nearly get the bad wrap it did. But their budget was terrible and Shatner didn't even get to do a lot of the things he wanted to. It's a shame really. I would've liked to see the "definitive" Star Trek V.
rob062388 2 years ago
Actually, I think this movie was a lot better than a people like to remember. The interaction between the main cast was INCREDIBLE, (especially Kirk, Spock and McCoy) and there was a lot of VERY funny moments ("Sulu look, the sun's come out!). Really, the story wasn't that bad, either, and Shatner's a much better writer than people give him credit for. For good or ill, it definitely captured the atmosphere of TOS. If it had been made earlier it would probably be remembered better.

Hay wate.
Didn't Goldsmith use this version of the theme, or at least a variation of it, for First Contact/Nemesis?
SuperSaiyanAl 2 years ago
Yeah this theme was used in The Motion Picture, The Final Frontier, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, although for each one Goldsmith changed or added something new and different.

My favorite opening of every Star Trek movie. I wished the latest movie would have a bit more of this theme, but it was awesome enough to go without it ;)

Underated theme (1:13 onwards) !!!
I watched this film the other night, if you think about hard its just like a TV episode and not as bad as its made out a lot of the time, its a time passer !!!
Best line in the whole film: "I liked him better before he died"

Music was great. Best in Star Trek 6, but good here as well. Too bad ST5 paled in comparison to ST6 (and ST2 and ST4).

I still wish they'd used this theme in the new Star Trek score. Goldsmith was a genius.

It is a wonderful score. I do like it a lot. It is interesting to note that star trek V was Shatner's only attempt at writing and directing. Nimoy wrote and directed star trek IV and VI. Maybe they should have just let him continue to write and direct.
sabamerv1313 2 years ago 5
I think that Shatner demanded that he write and direct a Star Trek movie of his own since he was the main star of the franchise.
There are several reasons why Star Trek V wasn't very good and unfortunately Shatner was probably the main reason lol.
krazie835 2 years ago
that is not fair.
Paramount wanted this movie to be as cheap as possible
henkman00 2 years ago 2
Exactly. Cheap as possible.
Shatner wanted to make a Star Trek epic.
StrayGator 2 years ago 2
maybe that fan project will show us what Shatner originally wanted the movie to be, so many budget cuts that there wasnt even enough money to make the title sequence that was in the script :(
henkman00 2 years ago
as quoted by him self in futurama:
"I got a good preformece out of me when i directed star trek 5 cause i respected me"
lol he is funny good old bill is.
frostymoviesjp 2 years ago 2
@krazie835 Actually, I don't think Shatner was to blame. His original version of the story was a very dark story, like The Wrath of Khan, but the studio execs wanted it to be lighter, because The Voyage Home had been light and was a hit. He had some good ideas, but ther was also problems with the budget, ILM couldnt do the effects for them, and they had less time to shoot- This was the most problematic one to make
Robotdrummerzzk 1 year ago
@Robotdrummerzzk It was about bad timing, too. The strike back in '88 with the Wrtier's Guild, not to mention the TNG being on the tube killed STV's chances of being a success. Still, I don't get how people still call this the worst movie of the bunch? What do I know?
Bla31n 1 year ago
@krazie835
I could be mistaken, but I don't beleive Shatner wrote ST 5. When 5 was made it was in the middle of a Hollywood writters strike and a set of different writters had to be hired. Even the Hollywood special effects people were on strike, and in both cases, it sure did show in this movie. Shows you just how skilled these Hollywood writers really are.
mrtrek64 1 year ago
@krazie835
Tslotha 1 year ago
Shatner writes best-selling novels now. the budget cuts really hurt this movie, a fan project is working on a re-edit for this movie based on the orginal script, not sure how far they are. the idea is to create the scenes that where never shot ( including the orginal ending)
henkman00 2 years ago
@sabamerv1313 1. Shatner didn't write ST V David Loughery wrote the screenplay based on the story idea of Shatner Bennett and himself 2. Nimoy didn't write any Star Trek movie either he directed ST III and ST IV and came up with the story of ST IV and ST VI 3. ST VI was directed by Nick Meyer
sondano 2 years ago
@sabamerv1313 actually he did 3 & 4, not 4 & 6
CAdvance 1 year ago
@sabamerv1313
In the Original Script, the movie was supposed to end with Rock Monsters, but the effect was too expensive to shoot.
spoonmonkey14 1 year ago
@sabamerv1313 Nimoy directed III and IV not VI.

A good post. The soundtrack was VERY underrated. Re-used the old themes brilliantly and added some wonderful new passages, perhaps the movie was relatively poor but this music stands up against any soundtrack for anything.
