I sort of drew my own conclusion. I imagined the boys wishing they would get a second chance and the Blue Fairy would help them escape. Then the boys would tell their parents everything and the Coachman would get arrested for all his crimes. That is a more satisfying ending.

Not only does he commit crimes against children, he is the only Disney villian who has commited lots of crimes to actually get away without being defeated or killed. It's absolutely terrifying -- people forget that Disney was good at this, just as he was at getting laughs and doing musical numbers. As someone above posted, the satanic laugh here would, certainly, send a young child screaming from the room -- and that's only the beginning! Ugh, I'd have my kids watch A Nightmare on Elm Street before Pinnocchio (if I had kids.) :D

I do know Culhane did some of this scene (he provides roughs and talks about how hard a time he had pose-to-pose with his hands), so that would explain Ferguson's element. Some of his stuff (no, no, nothing like that) is eerily similar to the Walrus he did a decade later...
